Fáiltiú an Chathaoirligh Fáilte róimh uilig go Páirc Aibhiustín De Staic inniu le h-aghaidh an chliuchetabhachtach seo idir Ciarraí agus Muineachán. Ta fáilte speisialta roimhmuintir Muineacháin, na h-imreoirí, na hoifigigh agus an lucht leanúna agusroimh an réiteoir agus a chuid oifigigh. Tá súil agam go mbeidh sár chluichespóirtiúl againn.

I welcome the senior football teams from Kerry and Monaghan, themanagement teams and supporters to this afternoon’s Round 6 game in theAllianz Football Leagues. I extend a special welcome to the players, officialsand supporters from Monaghan and hope they enjoy Kerry’s uniquehospitality during their brief stay this weekend. Welcome also to the referee, the umpires and linesmen.

The Kerry and Monaghan teams are level on points after five rounds. Bothteams come to this game following wins in Round 5 making today’s gamevery important for both Kerry and Monaghan. A victory would improve thewinning team’s hopes of reaching the semi-finals and a defeat will bring withit the huge pressure of avoiding relegation with just one game remainingafter today’s round. The results of this round of games could be decisive atboth ends of the table. On that account we can expect a very committedperformance from the Monaghan and Kerry players here this afternoon. Allthe indications are that this division will be very closely contested right upto the final round on Easter Sunday and all the teams in contention areanxious to pick up points to qualify for the two semi-final places and needlessto say to remain in Division 1.

A sincere thanks to all the Kerry supporters who turned out in big numbersfor the home games and to those who travelled to our away games againstDerry and Cork. They head north to Tyrone again next Sunday for the lastround. The team relies on good home crowd support to get behind the playersand they appreciate greatly those who travel long journeys to support them

Finally, I wish muintir Muineacháin a safe journey home and I hope youenjoyed your short visit to the Kingdom.

2010KERRY v MONAGHAN

This last round leaguegame in the 2010 NationalFootball League pittedKerry against Monaghan, with both sides strugglingto stay in Division 1.Imríodh an cluiche i Stáidan Ghearaltaigh i gCill Áirnear an Domhnach, 11úAibreán. As eventstranspired both sidessurvived and while doing soserved up a game ofreasonably good quality. However it was a gameduring which Kerry werealways in control, turningin a very workmanlikeperformance while

Monaghan never gave up the fight and did well to stay in touch and keep the deficit at just 4 points at the finalwhistle. Timmy Sheehan in his match report in The Kerryman newspaper noted some key moments from thegame. He said that Kerry were ‘in control from the outset and while Monaghan kept pace for long periods, Kerrywere always equal to the task and able to respond whenever their dominance and scoring advantage wasthreatened.’ He noted that substitute Barry John Keane (who had replaced the injured Colm Cooper), ‘workedtirelessly in an attack, which was inspired by some splendid first half scores from Paul Galvin, and over a prolongedperiod by the leadership of Kieran Donaghy.’ Although dominant, Kerry were ahead by just 2 points at half time,0 – 9 to 1 – 4, with Conor McManus crashing home a goal from a penalty rebound on 33 minutes. Yet Kerry startedthe second half well and in reality had the game well wrapped up by the 51st minute when Bryan Sheehan scoreda goal following a sublime pass from Donaghy. Both sides had a player dismissed before the end. The respectivemanagers were Jack O’Connor and Seamus McEneaney.

Monaghan went on to contest the 2010 Ulster Final where they lost to Tyrone, 1 - 14 to 0 - 7. Their season ended when losing to Kildare, 1 – 15 to 1 – 10 in round 4 of the Qualifiers.

Ciarraí v Muineacháin - PREVIEWMaybe it’s the confidence gleaned from All-Ireland success, maybe it’s that the players are a year older and wiser butwhat is clear is that Eamonn Fitzmaurice and hismanagement team are now very much in control of theirown destiny, with two rounds of the AFL to go.

No longer is the Kingdom down the relegation cellar, desperate for points to avoid the drop, (thoughmathematically it is still possible) or waiting for a Dub tokick an injury time point to save their top flight status. No,the scenario is this – beat Monaghan today and Tyrone awayfrom home in their final league game, and Kerry will be theLeague semis, #fact.

However, this is not going to be easy, and any Kerrysupporter who thinks so, should leave now.Monaghan got a second Allianz Football Leaguewin in the space of a week when they provedtoo strong for Derry in Clones two weeks ago.Monaghan kicked 0-14 from play, with ConorMcManus and Dessie Mone leading thecharge, as they claimed a third win out of five, which gives them a good chance of achievingtheir primary aim of staying up and leaves themcurrently sitting in a three-way tie for second place aheadof the trip to Tralee. This five-point win, which sawMonaghan lead from the 14th minute right through to thefinal whistle, also continues Malachy O’Rourke’s sideimpressive record at St. Tiarnach’s Park.So Monaghan have beaten Tyrone and Donegal away, and Derry at home, but lost to two southernopponents - Mayo away and Cork at home, just asKerry did! So very similar records thus far. Monaghanknow that six points does not guarantee top flightstatus and their problem is that they have two tough

games against Kerry on this Sundayand next weekend, they entertain

Dublin, who may need the win tomake the League semis, assuming they beat Derry. Sothe result of Donegal/Tyrone will

be vital for Monaghan, as willbeating the Kingdom.

Kerry are not exactly sailing into the clear water justyet, because even if they win, their scoring differenceis the worst of the teams around them at -7, so

depending on weekend results, theymay need something awayagainst Tyrone, who if they donot beat Donegal on Sunday, will be in the relegation zone.So both Monaghan and Kerry will be anxious for the win andanything less will have them looking down, rather than up.

Kerry and Monaghan, have met nine times in the Leagueand at present, Kerry have wins in ’85, ‘88, ‘89 (last time inTralee), 2006, 2010 and 2011 plus a semi-final win in ‘87 inCroke Park while Monaghan have wins in 85, 87 (regularseason) and 88; so Kerry have won the last five Leaguemeetings and also the last three Championship meetings,

85 (s/f replay), 2007 and 2008, all in Croke Park.Looking at the results, the one outstanding

feature is the fact that there is never muchbetween the sides, so if Kerry are to wintoday, it will probably be by a small margin.

Kerry will be hoping to repeat the Donegalperformance rather than the malfunction by

the banks of the Lee, and again the middle thirdwill prove crucial. Monaghan are likely to play with

lots of bodies behind the ball, so big performances will berequired from Anthony Maher, David Moran, Johnny Buckley,Peter Crowley and wing men Jonathan Lyne and KillianYoung, while Stephen O’Brien will have to repeat hisDonegal tour de force.

so if Kerry are to win today,

it will probably be by a

small margin

win and anything less will have them looking down, rather than up

Kerry have picked up a couple of injuries of late withBryan Sheehan, Mikey Geaney, Jack Sherwood and PaulMurphy joining the list of casualties but on the positiveside, Brian Kelly has recovered from along lay-off and returns in goal forhis first game since the All IrelandFinal, and Alan Fitzgerald gets hischance with his full league debutup front.

So another big game for Kerry, whichwill test the Kingdom to their very core inwhat could be a very physical game. It may be lowscoring, but based on the display against Donegal, Kerryshould be able to chisel a win from the Monaghangranite, but it may not be pretty.

Monaghan folk who are being welcomed to AustinStack Park today will hardly need reminding of theexcellence of Kerry’s first four-in-a row team of 1929-1932, whose 1931 tour of America featured on lastWednesday night’s episode 2 of ‘GAA USA’ on TG4.That tour, which raised £500 for the development ofthese grounds here in Tralee, came on the back ofwhat to this day is Kerry’s biggest winning margin onfootball’s biggest day - the 1930 All Ireland finalagainst Monaghan finished 3-11 to 0-2. It was a gamethat was overshadowed by the sad passing of DickFitzgerald two days beforehand and also by theMonaghan County Board’s complaints about Kerry’stactics after the match. In his book, Kerry’s Football Story, PF writes of ameeting of the Monaghan Co. Board after the 1930final where a member “likened the game to a bullfight”. PF also states that “complaints were madeagainst the referee, the Secretary Central Council andin regard to “the general arrangements for thematch”. At a subsequent meeting of the CentralCouncil Mr. R. O’Keeffe said Monaghan’s attitude was“a most childish exhibition of humbug”. Although relations between the counties are quitehealthy today, it is not surprising that the Kerry andMonaghan parties would bear each other suchanimosity at the time given the perceived and actual

associations each team had with the Republican andFree State sides respectively. In his excellent ‘Forginga Kingdom’, published two years ago, RichardMcElligott describes the 1930 final as the match thatwould enter GAA folklore as ‘the last battle of theCivil War’, and controversy surrounded the game fora number of years after. In May 1931, Kerry, as reigning All Ireland Championshaving beaten Monaghan, embarked on their secondtour of America with a stronger team than had firsttoured in 1927. The tour of 1927 was beset withproblems as Kerry lost the three headline games tostronger New York selections. The tour promoterdisappeared with funds (some of which weresupposed to pay for the development of the venuefor today’s game) and Republican elements withinthe Kerry travelling party are reported to havesecured some of the tour funds for their ownpurposes. This particular aspect of the 1927 tour iscovered in a ‘GAA USA’ interview I conducted inYankee Stadium with Kerry native, Professor Joe Lee.A repeat of episode 2 can be seen on TG4 at 7:15pmthis evening. The American Tour of 1931 was a greater successfrom a Kerry viewpoint. For a start, Kerry won all theirmatches with the opening game in Yankee Stadiumdrawing a then record 60,000 plus to the famousvenue. Liam O’Shea, Sports Editor of the New York

GAA USA presented by All-Ireland winning captain and award-winning broadcaster, Dara Ó Cinnéide, premieredrecently on TG4. It is a fascinating new four part series, which chronicles the extraordinary and largelyunknown history of Gaelic games in the United States.

Advocate at the time, wrote that the Kerry team“man for man were a credit to the Irish race” and hefound them to be “high-class, intelligent youngathletes, who can feel right at home in anycompany”. The remarks were warmly appreciated inKerry in light of the comments made about theirapproach in the previous year’s All Ireland. The £500tour proceeds went towards the development workin Tralee. Perhaps the only down-side to the 1931 tour wasthat it was during one of the games in America thatJohn Joe Sheehy realised that he no longer had thelegs to compete. He retired upon his return on theeve of the 1931 championship opener againstTipperary.

Planting the seed …..Lest our Monaghan guests sense that there is astrong Kerry bias in the GAA USA series, let mereassure you that all four provinces are equallyrepresented and indeed in programme 3 nextWednesday night, April 1st, the all-conquering UlsterGFC in San Francisco are featured as they go about

the business of winning three-in-a-row NorthAmerican Championships, 2012-2014. Theirs is a remarkable story of the dedication andbehind the scenes work that has made them themost formidable football team in North Americathese past three years. The club’s initial aims whenformed in 1986/87 went beyond sporting concernsand their club constitution was a very clear reflectionof their political orientation. The Ulster GFC have a Political Wing Committee(PWC) to ensure that their republican traditions arehonoured and upheld and I have no doubt that theirvery clear ideology has helped them become the clubthey are today. Although the political landscape haschanged considerably and many club members todaywouldn’t be as keenly aware of the republicanheritage of Ulster GFC, the club still retains the sortof genuine feeling for its roots that one finds in allwell-functioning GAA communities. The fourth and final programme in the GAA USAseries, to be broadcast on April 8th, examines thecurrent efforts being made by clubs all over theUnited States to move away from an import-basedmodel of developing Gaelic Games towards a moregrassroots based growth. This movement is bestrepresented by the initiation over 20 years ago in SanFrancisco of the Irish Football Youth Leagues underthe guidance of Milford, Co Cork native, JohnO’Flynn. These leagues planted the seed for thephenomenally successful Continental YouthChampionships (CYC) in 2004 and for what hashappened every year since at venues all over theUnited States: an explosion of colour, of diversity, ofcross cultural participation and of possibility for ournative games. The past two years were an exciting time to beundertaking research and production work on aseries documenting the complex history of Gaelicgames in the United States. Since the first episodewas broadcast less than a fortnight ago, I have beencontacted by club members in places as far apart asPortland Oregon, Concord New Hampshire,Pittsburgh Pennsylvania and San Antonio Texas toname but a few. All are at the frontier of where our games are goingright now, and all have their own stories to tell. We’ll be all the richer for their telling.

Aisteach go leor, thóg an scoil sos archúis amháin nó eile ó Chomórtais naMumhan ós na caogaidí, tráth ar bhuadarCorn Frewen, go dtí go luath sna nóchaidí.Ó shin, is mó gradam a bhaineadar amach igcomórtais Choláistí na Mumhan. Tá dháChraobh na hÉireann ‘B’ buaite ag Meánscoil namBráithre Críostaí leis i 1995 agus 2001. Níl aon amhras ná gurb í anscoilbhliain 2011/’12 bliain órga peile na scoile, tráth arbhuadar Corn Uí Mhuirí don gcéad uair riamh chomh maith lecúig chorn eile; Corn an Fhriúnaigh, Corn Uí Mhóráin, Corn UíShúilleabháin, Corn Dunloe agus Corn Ruiséal. Anuraidhbhuaigh an scoil Corn Uí Mhuirí agus Corn Uí Ógáin Go dtí seoi mbliana tá Corn Uí Mhuirí buaite acu. Ar ndóigh, tá Corn UíShúilleabháin, Corn Dunloe, Corn Ruiséal, Corn na ChéadBhliana Choláistí Chiarraí buaite ag Meánscoil na mBráithre

On their way to winning back toback titles in 2007 Kerry played fivematches, and although Cork gavethem a good battle in the provincialfinal, this quarter final meetingbetween the Kingdom and theFarneymen was the game where itlooked as if the Kingdom would fall. However, despite a superb displayby the challengers, they ran out ofsteam in the closing minutes andKerry did just enough to forge outthe narrowest of victories.Monaghan made the ideal start withpoints from Rory Woods and TomásFreeman supplemented byFreeman’s goal from a penalty afterCiarán Hanratty had been fouled bythe combined forces of Tomás Ó Séand Eoin Brosnan.

Kerry recovered from that sluggishopening and were on level terms bythe interval- 0-8 to 1-5. Themomentum appeared to be with thechampions, but Monaghancontinued to impress and by the endof the third quarter were three

points in front (1-9 to 0-9) afterWoods and Hanratty were on target. When Declan O’Sullivan goaled torestore parity early in the fourthquarter it looked as if Kerry wouldpress on, but Monaghan came againand points by Freeman and PaulFinlay edged them two in front withfive minutes remaining despitesome outstanding defensive playfrom Marc Ó Sé in particular. A bracefrom substitute Bryan Sheehanhauled Kerry level before Tomas ÓSé fisted over the winner in the lastminute. Scorers: KERRY: Mike Frank Russell 0-4, ColmCooper 0-3, Declan O’Sullivan 1-0, Bryan Sheehan0-2, Killian Young, Eoin Brosnan and Tomás Ó Sé0-1 each. Friends of Jamie Wall MONSTER GAA QUIZJamie Wall is a former Cork Minor and U21 dual player from Kilbrittain who suffered an infection in hisspinal column and is now confined to wheelchair for the foreseeable future. CIARRAÍ 2-11 MUINEACHÁN 1-9You couldn’t help feeling sorry for Monaghan after the1987 League semi final when they were deprived ofvictory by a late Kerry onslaught at Croke Park.Trailing by three points with time moving on, theKingdom quickly stepped up their game and when athree man passing movement involving MichaelMcAuliffe, Mikey Sheehy and Pat Spillane ended up inPaddy Linden’s net, the Ulster men looked visiblyshaken. However, of more significance was a furtherbrace of points by John Kennedy and Sheehy to see outthe contest by 2-11 to 1-9. This was a game that broughtthe best out of both teams and Monaghan also showedplenty of promise from time to time.Kerry lost Eoin Liston with a hamstring injury but theystill showed great willingness to move the ball around. They were also playing against the strong wind butsettled quicker with points from John Kennedy andMikey Sheehy. However, it was to Monaghan’s greatcredit that they kept in touch with points by DavidByrne and Hugo Clerkin. The game was vigorouslycontested and the closeness of the scoring made it agripping affair.Ger Power’s goal and point eased the Kingdom into anarrow lead but very quickly midfielder Hugo Clerkinraised a green flag to the delight of the big northernfollowing . At half time it was anybody’s game with thewinners narrowly in front by 1-5 to 1-3.Sheehy extended Kerry’s half time lead to four pointsand then came a second Monaghan goal from MichaelO’Dowd that threw the game wide open. In the finalanalysis however, Kerry never relaxed their grip andnot for the first time in his illustrious career PatSpillane brought them back from the dead.
