Winterthur owes its cultural wealth to rich patrons from the days when Winterthur was an important

industrial centre: with the onset of the industrialisation in the 19th century Winterthur rose quickly to

become an important economic centre thanks to motor, locomotive and textile factories.

The cultural city of Winterthur in addition to several theatres and the biggest event venue of

Switzerland is also home to the Swiss cabaret and comedy centre. The friendly old town of

Winterthur with its many street cafes is perfect for strolling and shopping.

In spite of its industrial tradition Winterthur is also a 'garden city' with a conspicuously large number

of parks and gardens. There is even a city tour dedicated to "Villas and Gardens". In the charming

area surrounding Winterthur, in the forests, wine-growing areas, by the Töss and Rhine there are

castles with which the people of Winterthur today as in the past have a particularly close relationship.

Winterthur is also a perfect starting point for excursions to Lake Constance and the Rhine or to the

nearby metropolis of Zurich.

A perfect day in WinterthurWith its magnificent art collections and monuments, its lively Old Town and its energetic music and comedy scene, Winterthur offers a cornucopia of culture. The spacious parks and gardens, meanwhile, give Switzerland’s sixth-largest city a seductive blend of big-city grandeur and a small-town closeness to nature – along with its celebrated reputation as the country’s “garden city”.

08:00Breakfast in the Park

Start your day out in the open: in warm weather, you can take

your breakfast on the idyllic terrace at Restaurant Bloom, or under

the impressive old beech tree in the garden – with the Old Town

for a backdrop.

09:00A guide in your ear

A multimedia audio-visual guide lets visitors spend a couple of

hours exploring Winterthur’s Old Town independently. The

entertaining commentary covers the most important sights, but

also has a few surprises in store – including visits to lesser

known spots, such as hidden fountains and secluded back

courtyards.

11:00Photography in focus

The Fotomuseum Winterthur serves as an art gallery for

contemporary photography, as a traditional museum for works by

19th- and 20th-century masters and as a cultural, historical and

sociological museum of applied photography. Together with the

Swiss Foundation of Photography it runs an all-round

“Photography Centre”, with a library, seminar rooms, bistro,

lounge and shop. As a result, this complex has won a reputation as one of Europe’s most innovative

venues for the photographic arts.

13:00Lunch with George

Located in the airy premises of the world-famous Fotomuseum

Winterthur, George is the museum’s gastronomic counterpart, a

café-restaurant serving delicious dishes including what are

reputed to be the city’s finest cakes and pastries. The tasteful

bistro offers a wide range of its own original creations, as far

removed from the familiar as are the works in the neighbouring

museum. The tasty lunchtime menus are expressions of the art of reinterpreting classic dishes, and

of combining ingredients from all over the world in unexpected combinations with mouth-watering

skill.

14:30Feel the force Here you will find that science is easy to grasp – literally. At

Technorama, more than 500 hands-on science and technology

exhibits are waiting to be discovered and explored. Touching is

strongly encouraged, and playing strictly allowed – for at the only

Science Centre in Switzerland, everything revolves around

experiencing things yourself. Sparks fly at the live shows – for

example at “Megavolts and kiloamps: the natural history of lightning”, while you can experience the

thrill of discovery at workshops that invite you to roll up your sleeves and join in – creating your own

perfume, for example.

17:30A stroll through history

Many visitors find that the best way to take in the Marktgasse is

simply to find a bench, sit down and watch. For this car-free

street, which leads right through Winterthur’s charming Old

Town, is the core of what’s said to be Switzerland’s largest

pedestrian zone – scattered with more than 300 shops and over

100 restaurants and bars. The “Schlauch”, as the street is known

by locals, is the beating heart of the Old Town, whose houses, alleyways and fountains bear witness

to a rich past – well worth exploring at leisure.

19:00Urban lifestyle The former display case of the manufacturing firm Sulzer is no

longer used for displaying company news, but for celebrating

great art on a small scale. Artists from the region alternate with

national names and up-and-coming talent. This unusual mini-

exhibition fits well in the Sulzer Area, which has become a

fashionable residential and leisure zone. More than 300

apartments, shopping centres, specialist colleges and facilities – including Europe’s largest indoor

hall for contemporary sport (inline skating, beach volleyball, climbing, etc.) – guarantee activity round

the clock.

20:00Dine in a historic setting

Wülflingen Castle is home to a sophisticated GaultMillau-rated

restaurant, making use of a variety of atmospheric rooms that

ooze historic charm. The precious interiors have been sensitively

renovated and brought vividly to life – an exemplary work of

restoration for which the castle has received a special award.

Fine tiled stoves, impressive hunting trophies, exquisite panelling

and precious pieces of antique furniture decorate the various dining rooms. One of the showpieces

is the spacious old wine cellar, which makes an atmospheric venue for drinks receptions and

tastings.

22:30Ninety metres above normality

23 floors up, and you feel as though you’re already in seventh

heaven. The views extend over the city of Winterthur, as far as

the summit of the venerable Säntis, and lose themselves

somewhere in the Alps way to the south. Up in the Red Tower,

the city is not only at your feet, but the whole world lies 95 metres

below you – notably when you are in the tasteful bar, perched

above the restaurant. Here you can enjoy fruity drinks, select wines, and the fine “Red Tower

nibbles” – as well as the priceless views.

23:30Life & Style See, be seen and dance: the Bolero Club & Lounge is where the

beautiful people come to celebrate life. All of the rooms have been

laid out according to the principles of Feng Shui and with their

warm colours offer a welcoming place to relax. Six bars and

eleven Mediterranean stone columns form the backdrop to the

dancefloor.

24:00Krone boutique hotel

The Sorell Hotel Krone, located in the heart of Winterthur’s Old

Town, offers the thrilling combination of an irresistibly charming

historic building and stylish modern interiors. The in-house

restaurant Pearl serves the finest gourmet cuisine (16 GaultMillau

points), while the bistro La Couronne is known for its creative,

market-fresh specialities.

Winterthur’s vibrant city centre offers an enticing and enjoyable

shopping experience. Jewellery shops alternate with boutiques

and delicatessens with craft shops. Enjoy fine dining at

restaurants with an historical ambiance.

Roter Turm (Red Tower)

The Swisscom Tower, completed in 2000 and now the property

of AXA Winterthur Versicherungen, was designed by considering

local features with regards to urban development and the

materials used. The meander-shaped office wings refer to the

scale of the urban environment, forming a base from which the

tower twists up like a sculpture. The brick façades allude to the

tradition of brick buildings which dominate the surrounding cityscape. From the tower restaurant

there is a breathtaking view over the city.

The iron console clocks by the Winterthur Liechti clockmakers

are also remarkable. In the Kellenberger Timepiece Collection you

will truly go on a "journey through time".

The line-up of extraordinary timepieces extends from early instruments for observing the heavens

and chronometry, sundials and sand glasses, gigantic wheel clocks and artistic clocks through to

pocket watches and electrical timekeepers. The exhibition is divided into topics highlighting the

different aspects of the history of timepieces.

Kunsthalle With its five or six annual temporary exhibitions, the Kunsthalle

Winterthur introduces the artistic zeitgeist to the Winterthur Old

Town. Video and computer art, installations, photography and

many other unique art forms find their niche in the Kunsthalle.

Also, in the “Third Room”, set up by the Swiss artist Mark Divo,

art gets up close and personal – whether it be in discussion with the Kunsthalle management team,

with the artists themselves, or relaxing on a sofa and browsing in the library.

Oskar Reinhart Museum am Stadtgarten

Patron of the arts Oskar Reinhart (1885–1965), who came from a

wealthy merchant family, collected over 800 paintings in the

course of his life. He visited the most important museums in

Europe as well as many private collections, and devoted himself

solely to art and art patronage. He bequeathed his collections as

well as his private home, "Am Römerholz", to Switzerland.

Around 600 paintings by German, Swiss and Austrian artists from the 18th to 20th century are on

view at the Oskar Reinhart Museums in the Stadtgarten (City Gardens). The villa "Am Römerholz"

houses the 200 works of European art from the Late Gothic to the Classical Modern period that

emphasize French painting of the 19th century.

City Park In the 18th century, what is now the City Park was laid out in

gardens with small houses offering weekend or summertime

accommodation. The narrow „Baroque houses“date back to this

era.

The present-day park was established in the sixties after a design

competition was held. Several tree-rarities make the park a special place to visit. So here you will

find American sequoias, a laciniate beech, a genuine sugar maple and a rare horse chestnut.

Swiss Science Center Technorama

Technorama Winterthur is a center for experiments that is geared

towards science. Physical phenomena such as electricity,

magnetism, one's own perceptions or mathematics can be

literally grasped at over 500 stations for experiments spread over

an area of 6,500 square meters. Here, trying out, touching,

agitating, triggering and doing something oneself is not just

allowed but is obligatory. This hands-on dealing with natural phenomena gives the visitor insight into

scientific thinking.

The offerings are supplemented by various presentations on topics such as gases, the ozone hole,

the greenhouse effect, lighting supraconductivity and lasers.

Nature Park Bruderhaus

Among the animals, there are rare deer, lynxes, wild boars,

European bison, and the famed Przewalski horses. This original

horse is considered the legitimate ancestor of today's domestic

horse and was first found in Mongolia in 1882. Since 1970, the

animal is considered to be extinct, at least in its wild and free

form. Thanks to a European breeding program, the species could

be preserved in zoos. The program has been so successful that in 1990, the animals have been re-

released in their original habitat, the Gobi desert, in the hope that they will continue breeding on their

own. (Further information on www.takhi.org).

Mt. Eschenberg is home to two didactic trails, one dedicated to forestry, the other to geology. On this

mountain you will also find a trail suitable for children, a Luchs resting place, a large playground for

children in the pre-Kindergarten age in the center of the park as well as a restaurant. There is

something for everybody.

Getting there:

The Nature Park Bruderhaus is situated in the middle of the forest on the Eschenberg. Take bus

number No. 4 to the Breite stop and from there, walk for about 30 minutes on well-marked trails. By

car, take highway A1 to the exit marked Toess via Breite - Waldheim - Eschenberg.

Summer Theatre Regular theatrical performances have been held here from June

to September since 1890. The repertoire includes classical and

contemporary comedies as well as farces.

While the actors and actresses are busy on the stage, the

audience sits in the garden surrounded by chestnut trees and

beeches. For the past few years, a flexible roof has ensured that the audience remains dry. When

the weather is cold, performances are held on the first floor of the Strauss Restaurant.

Mörsburg This history museum specialises in exhibits from the 17th and

18th centuries. The castle was first mentioned in 1241 as being in

the possession of the Counts of Kyburg. They commissioned the

building of the early Gothic chapel in 1250.

In subsequent centuries, the Habsburg and Goldenberg noble

families possessed the castle before it passed into the ownership of the city of Winterthur in 1598. In

addition to furniture and everyday objects from the 17th and 18th centuries, the museum also has an

excellent weapon and glass collection.
