Notice is given in terms of the National Environmental Management Act (No. 107 of 1998) asamended (NEMA) with reference to Government Notice Regulations (GNR) 543 and 544 of2010 of the intent to demolish the South Plant Facility located within the Metalloys Complex atMeyerton, Gauteng.
DESCRIPTIONIn January 2012 operations at South Plant were discontinued and the infrastructure maderedundant. The proposed project will result in the demolition of the redundant furnaces, with theinfrastructure being demolished to slab level. The existing foundations are to remain to enable thepossible re-engineering of the site for alternative light and/or heavy industrial uses.
ENVIRONMENTAL APPLICATIONIn order to receive environmental authorisation, Metalloys, a division of Samancor Manganese(PTY) Ltd is required to undertake a basic assessment (BA) process in accordance withEnvironmental Impact Assessment Regulations GNR.543 of 2010. The activity associated withthe proposed decommissioning project is listed in the GNR.544 of 2010, Activity 27(iv): “Thedecommissioning of existing facilities or infrastructure for activities, where the facility or land onwhich it is located is contaminated”.
A BA application form has been submitted to the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and RuralDevelopment, who will be responsible for authorising the project in terms of the NEMA. Thefollowing reference number has been issued:-GAUT: 002/12-13/E0145.
