語学を習得しながら地域に貢献する新しいコンセプトの語学学校Culture & Lan-guage Connectionsがモントリオールに誕生しました。

儲けや報酬ではなく、社会にどれだけ強い効果を与えたかを成功の尺度にしている人たちを社会起業家（Social Entrepreneur)と呼ぶ。大橋慶子さんが語学学校「Culture & Language Connections」をオープンさせたのも、そんな考えに共感したからだ。　大阪府守口市出身の彼女が、トロント出身の夫AJさんとモントリオールにやってきたのが約2年前。日本では大手銀行でキャリアを積んでいたが、2001年のNYテロ事件で価値観が大きく変わった。「世界で何が起こっているのか自分の目で見てみたい」という気持ちに後押しされ、ワーキングホリデー制度を利用してバンクーバーにやってきた。留学生を支援するエージェントで働いたあと、日本に戻りJETプログラムで中学校の英語教師をしていたAJさんと結婚、再びカナダの地にやってきた。

モントリオールを選んだのは、人々が人生を楽しんでいることを肌で感じられ、歩いて回るのに丁度良いサイズの街だから。そして何よりも、新しいことにチャレンジする環境が整っていること。

この語学学校を立ち上げることができたのも、地域の経済・社会活性化を目的として35歳以下の起業家を支援するケベック政府にサポートされた団体CDEC (Corpora-tion de développement économique commu-nautaire) に認められたからだ。

「Culture（文化）とLanguage（言語）って、密接な関わりを持っていると思います。それが学校という場を通して、個性豊かな人間性を作る糧となり、生涯にわたる国際交流のネットワークを構築する可能性へ繋げることができます。体験学習を通して自己表現の新たな一面を発見して欲しいです。」

語学学習だけでなく、地域でのボランティア活動等に参加する機会を設けることで、様々な場面で生きた語学を身につけ、練習することができる。これも、この学校のミッションのひとつである。少人数制クラスの他、語学勉強と郊外学習を通してこの街を最大限に楽しむパッケージもある。

必ずしも平等ではない世の中でも、一生懸命頑張って生きている人のために、今の自分達は何ができるのか？教育という場を通して、どのように国際社会に貢献していけるのか？真摯にその答えを求めている慶子さんの瞳が、心優しく、とても心強い光を放っていたのが印象的だった。

Ms. Keiko OhashiA language school with a new concept is here in Montreal. It is committed to contributing to the local language learning community.

A new concept appearing these days is the idea of ‘Social Entrepreneurship.’ A social entrepre-neur can be defined as someone who evaluates his/her success not only by profit and rewards he/she may receive but also by how much im-pact he/she has in the community. Ms. Keiko Ohashi has opened a language school called “Culture & Language Connections” because she believes in and feels passionate about the con-cept of social entrepreneurship.

Two years ago, Keiko moved to Montreal from her home, Moriguchi City in Osaka, with her husband AJ, who is originally from Toronto. Keiko used to work for a major bank in Japan. However, her values dramatically shifted fol-lowing the 2001 terrorist attacks in New York. She began to think, “I want to see what is going on in the world through my own eyes.” These thoughts pushed her to travel to Vancouver on a working visa. During her time in Canada, she worked as an agent supporting overseas students. After three years, she returned home to Japan. Back in Japan, Keiko met her husband AJ, who was participating in the JET Program teaching English at a Junior High School. After getting married, Keiko and AJ decided to return to Canada.

For many reasons, Keiko decided to settle in Montreal. She felt it was a city where people tru-ly enjoyed living their lives. She also enjoys the size of the city and walking around its streets. Furthermore, Keiko felt that the atmosphere was one that encouraged innovation and tak-ing risks –a perfect climate for someone with dreams of starting a business.

Keiko was able to open her school because CDEC (Corporation de développement économique communautaire) – a group supported by the Quebec government that in turn supports en-trepreneurs under 35 years of age – recognized her efforts. “I think that there is a very close re-lationship between culture and language. They link together to provide us with enriched ex-periences in the hopes of creating long-lasting cross-cultural relationships. I hope our students can find new ways of expressing themselves through experiential learning.”

Not only learning language but also participat-ing in volunteer activities in the local communi-ty will allow students to gain practical language and cultural experience. This is one of the school’s missions. With small class sizes, Culture & Language Connections also offers a package that combines language learning with local city tours and day excursions to interesting places in and around the city in order to maximize stu-dent’s experiences in Montreal.

Worldwide, there isn’t equality when it comes to opportunity, freedom and education. How-ever, Keiko lives her life looking for answers to these questions: “How can we use our resources to help people in developing countries achieve their own goals?” and “How can we contribute to international society using education as a tool for change?” It was very impressive to see Ms. Keiko Ohashi’s genuineness and compassion.

Un nouveau terme se fait entendre ces der-niers temps, celui de l’Entrepreneur Social. Un entrepreneur social se définit comme étant une personne qui n’évalue pas son succès uniquement par les profits et béné-fices qu’elle reçoit, mais aussi par son im-pact qu’il ou elle peut donner à la société. Mme. Keiko Ohashi à ouvert une école de langue appelée « Culture & Langage Connections », elle croit passionnément à ce nouveau concept.

Il y a deux ans, elle a quitté la ville de Mori-guchi, situé à Osaka, avec son mari AJ qui est originaire de Montréal pour venir s’ins-taller ici. Dans le passé, elle travaillait dans

une grande banque au Japon, mais ses valeurs ont changé dramatique-ment après les attentats terroristes de 2001 à New York. Elle a commencé a penser : « Je veux voir ce qui se passe dans le mon-de de mes propres yeux. » Ces pensées l’ont poussée à voyager à Vancouver avec un visa vacance tra-vail. Pendant qu’elle était là-bas, elle a travaillé dans une agence qui aidait les étudiants étrangers, et en-suite elle est retournée au Japon. C’est de retour au Japon qu’elle a rencontré son mari, AJ qui participait au programme JET, en enseignant l’anglais au ni-veau secondaire. L’amour et le mariage l’ont ramené au Canada.

Elle a choisi Montréal puisqu’elle apprécie l’at-mosphère des gens qui y vivent; le sentiment que les gens se sentent bien

dans leur peau. D’autre part, elle apprécie la taille de la ville

qui lui permet aisément de se promener à la découverte de ses différents quartiers. De plus, Montréal est une ville qui encou-rage l’innovation sans avoir peur de pren-dre des risques, bref, un climat parfait pour quelqu’un qui rêve de commencer en af-faire.

Mme. Ohashi a été capable d’ouvrir son école grâce à l’appui du CDEC (Corporation de développement économique commu-nautaire), un groupe qui est supporté par le gouvernement québécois et qui vient en aide aux entrepreneurs âgés de moins de 35 ans. « Je crois qu’il y a une relation très proche entre la culture et le langage. Les deux nous permettent de nous nourrir de savoir et de devenir des individus riches en connaissance. J’espère que les étudiants vont trouver de nouvelles façons de s’expri-mer à travers leurs expériences d’apprentis-sage ». En ce portant volontaire dans des activités communautaires, les étudiants apprennent non seulement des langues, mais ils ont également la possibilité de les mettre en pratiques. Ceci est l’une des missions de l’école. Avec des petites classes, Culture Langage Connections offre différentes mé-thodes d’apprentissage de langues. Pour maximiser l’expérience, l’école offre des vi-sites et des excursions d’un jour dans divers endroits intéressants de Montréal et de ses alentours.

Le monde n’est pas toujours égal pour tous les gens. Cependant, Keiko-san recherche une réponse à ces questions : « Comment utiliser nos ressources pour aider des per-sonnes dans les pays en voie de dévelop-pement à atteindre leurs propres buts ? » et « Comment pouvons-nous contribuer à la société internationale dans le domaine de l’éducation? »

J’ai été impressionné par l’authenticité et la compassion que dégageait Mme Keiko Ohashi.

日本人と花見

長かった冬がようやく終わり、浅草の町に春風が吹いてきました！町を歩く人々も、春の訪れを喜んでいるのか、心なしかウキウキとして見えます。日本の春を語るとき、何といっても外せない話題は「花見」。「花見」とは、文字通り「花を見に行く」ことですが、この場合の花は桜の花をさします。淡いピンク色の桜の花は、青空の下で見ても、夕闇の中で見ても、とても幻想的で美しいもの。花の盛りは、満開になってから1週間と無い短さ…それゆえ日本人は、桜の命の儚さに、人の運命の儚さを重ねあわせ、古来ロマンを感じてきたのです。

さて、「花見」に話を戻しましょう！「花見」は桜の花を愛でながら、木の下でピクニックするイベント。浅草は桜の名所なので、このシーズンは至るところで「花見」をしている人たちに出会います。「花見」のスタイルは、十人十色。青空の下、子どもたちを遊ばせながら春の訪れを楽しむも良し、夕暮れ時に日本酒を一杯やりながら、気の置けない友人たちとどんちゃん騒ぎするも良し。普段はとってもシャイな日本人も、この時ばかりはついつい浮かれてしまいます。隣のグループ同士で飲んでいた男女がいつの間にか近づいて交際が始まることもあるぐらい！嬉しいサプライズが潜んでいるかもしれません。

最近では「花見」専門のケータリング業者もいて、電話一本で指定の公園に駆けつけ、面倒な場所取りやピクニック・シートの設営、テーブルセッティングからお酒、温かい食事の用意、アウトドア用の暖房用意など、至れり尽くせりの準備をしてくれるそうです。

気軽なピクニックから本格的パーティまで、花見には色々なスタイルがあるけれど、私は一人のお花見も大好き。ワインの小瓶とサンドイッチを持って、ふらりと桜並木へ。桜吹雪が舞い散る中、ひとりであれこれ考えるのは、最高に贅沢な春の過ごし方ではないでしょうか。

Japanese People and Cherry Blossom Viewing

The long winter has finally come to an end and has made way for the spring breeze to blow across the town of Asakusa. People walking down the street look exhilarated at the coming of spring.

Cherry blossom viewing is the most talked-about topic in Japan during the spring season. The pale pink petals are very beautiful under the blue sky, and are just as fascinating in the dusk of evening. The blossoms last only a week after their peak blooming period. Japanese people have compared the life of human beings with the transient life of the cherry blossoms since ancient times, and have thus always appreciated this natural beauty.

Now, to get back to cherry blossom viewing... In spring, many people go out to see the blossoms and have picnics under the trees. Since Asakusa is one of the well-known viewing spots, you can find people having picnics almost anywhere this season. Everyone has their own way of enjoying the experience. You can enjoy the arrival of spring with your children playing by your side, or you can have a party in the evening and drink alcohol with your close friends. Although Japanese people tend to be very shy, this occasion is an exception. There are times when a man from one group gets to know a woman from another, and they may even become a couple. You might be surprised to find yourself a date there as well!

These days, there are event planners specializing in “cherry blossom viewing.” With one call, they will come to the specified spot to arrange the event, and will take care of important details such as holding your place, setting up the picnic blanket (or tables), providing drinks and warm dishes, and preparing portable heating devices.

From a casual picnic to a full-scale party, there are various ways to enjoy cherry blossom viewing. Personally, I like to go, with a small bottle of wine and some sandwiches, and see the rows of cherry blossom trees by myself. I think it is a fulfilling way to pass the time in spring: pondering life while surrounded by petals blowing in the wind.

Les Japonais et la contemplation des cerisiers (Sakura)

Le long hiver est finalement terminé. Dans le quartier d’Asakusa, le vent du printemps souffle! On peut y voir d’heureux passants aux coeurs qui se réjouissent de l’arrivée du printemps.

Au Japon lorsque nous parlons du printemps, il y a un point qui ap-paraît toujours dans nos conversations : « la contemplation des ceri-siers ». En japonais ce phénomène possède un nom qui se résume en deux caractères : l’un désigne le mot fleur et l’autre représente le verbe regarder. La combinaison de ces deux caractères signifie « allons voir les fleurs », mais c’est sous-entendu que ce sont les fleurs de cerisiers. La couleur rose pâle de ces fleurs sous un ciel bleu, ou à la noirceur, dé-gage une atmosphère magique et éblouissante. Une fois qu’elles ont fleuri, la période de floraison ne dure que moins d’une semaine... Ainsi, par son aspect éphémère, les japonais ont associé pendant des siècles cette floraison et Sakura à la chance fragile de la romance.

Bon, retournons au sujet de « la contemplation des cerisiers » ! « La contemplation des cerisiers » est un événement où les gens font un pique-nique sous les arbres de cerisiers pour admirer les Sakura. À Asakusa qui est un endroit très populaire pendant cette saison, nous pouvons rencontrer plusieurs gens qui font « la contemplation des ce-risiers ». Pour les japonais, ceci reflète le proverbe japonais : « plusieurs gens pour plusieurs visions ». Sous un ciel bleu, les enfants s’amusent et se réjouissent de la présence du printemps. Au couché du soleil, on en profite pour boire un verre de *saké dans une ambiance détendue avec beaucoup de festivités entre amis et collègues. Les japonais qui sont normalement timides et réservés, sortent de leur coquille en cette période et profitent du beau temps. Même les groupes mixtes qui boi-vent l’un à côté de l’autre se rapprochent et interagissent. Qui sait, il y aura peut-être de belles surprises!

Récemment « la contemplation des cerisiers » a fait également place à une concentration de restaurateurs. Avec un coup de téléphone, on peut appeler l’un d’eux pour qu’il nous réserve un bel endroit dans le parc, arrange la feuille à pique-nique, emporte les ustensiles, et fournit l’alcool ainsi que de la nourriture chaude avec leurs réchauds. Il paraît que la préparation se fait avec beaucoup de courtoisie.

D’un petit pique-nique entre amis à une fête, l’observation des Saku-ra se fait de plusieurs façons, mais moi j’aime aussi bien les regarder seule. Avec une petite bouteille de vin et un sandwich je flâne dans les rangs de cerisiers. Dans une tempête de pétales de Sakura, toute seule je pense à tout et à rien. N’est-ce pas le meilleur moyen de profiter du printemps? *Alcool de riz.

お母さん、ありがとう

5月と言えば母の日ですね。私自身、母親になってもう7年目です。小さかった頃に良く言われた「あなたもお母さんになったら分かるわよ」の言葉が今になって身に沁みてきています。子供の頃を振り返ると、心配をかけたり、怒らせるようなことをたくさんしてきたなと実感しています。

小さな女の子から女性へと変化し、いずれかは母親となります。「母親」になる、つまり新たな命をこの世に産む事がどんなにたいへんなことかを経験します。10ヶ月の間は大切に体内で育て、ものすごい痛みと共に一人の命を産みます。その「産む」という決心には、人それぞれ喜びや幸せがありますが、反対に悲しみや辛さも混じり、未知の世界へ歩み始めようとする不安と恐れもあることでしょう。どんな環境であれ、「産む」と決心した時点で母親とは素晴らしい存在なんだと思います。

しかし、不安と恐怖感のために、産んだ子を手放すような方もいますし、その子に愛情を与えないような方もいます。子を乱暴に扱ったり、八つ当たりの対象にしたり、最終的には完全に無視したりと、それぞれのストーリーがあります。

そんな環境の中で育った子供達へ伝えたいメッセージがあります。あなたの母親はパーフェクトではありません、あなた自身のように。全ての母親は、たくさんのことを経験をし、妊娠し、どんなことがあっても「産む」と決心したのですから、それに感謝すべきだと思います。少なくともそこに愛があったと信じています。誰も「母親になる参考書」などを読んで、子を産むのではありません。あなたと同じように、母親も間違えたりしますが、あなたから学びながら大きくなっていくのです。母親に感謝の気持ちを抱けば、そこから「一緒に学んで行こう」という気持ちが溢れ出てくると思います。また、子供に恵まれなくても、養子として他人の子を自分の子のように育ててくれる方もいます。そんな方達の「母親になる」と決心した気持ちにも、感謝すべきだと思います。

私には、義理の母を含め二人の母親に恵まれています。思春期の頃、自分の母親を拒否していた時期もありました。しかし彼女の母親になるまでの人生を理解し始め、私を産んでくれ、その後もたくさんの経験をしてきたことを知り、母親も私たちと同じなんだと気がつきました。私を産んでくれた事に感謝し始めてから、母に対する思いが180度変わりました。そして義理の母親とも、最初は言葉の壁を理由に関わりづらかった時がありました。でも今は、彼女のことを良く知りたいとフランス語を学びながら大切な関係を作っています。二人から学ぶことがたくさんあり、私からもたくさん教えられることがあると思います。

この世界中の母親みなさんに、「ご苦労様」と「ありがとう」の言葉を伝えたいと思います。母の日おめでとうございます。ありがとう、そして大好きです。

Thank you, Mother

When I think of the month of May, I think of Mother’s Day. I, myself, have been a mother for the last 7 years now. When I was young I was told many times, “When you become a mother your-self, you’ll understand.” In many ways, I can now reflect a lot on these words. When I look back at my childhood, I can see just how much trouble I caused my mother, including all the worries and angers.

From being a child, all girls grow up to become a woman and will eventually become a mother. To be a “mother,” which means to bring a life into this world, is a very difficult thing. For 10 whole months, a woman will bare a life, and through so much pain that life is brought into this world. Birthing involves a great deal of determination, and with this determination comes joy and hap-piness to some. To others, it can brings sadness, anguish, fear and uncertainty for stepping into the world of the unknown to some depending on their situation. Whichever situation they may be in, having the decision to ”give birth” to a child at this point already makes them such wonderful beings.

However, with the overwhelming feeling of fear and terror, some may abandon their child and some may not give love to the child. Some may abuse the child; take it all out onto the child; and when all fails some may ignore the child completely. Every-one has their own story.

The message I wanted to give out is for those children. Your mother is not perfect, just like you. All mothers have had their lives to live and they have become pregnant. Yet despite it all, they had that one determination to give birth to you and that is something to be thankful for. I’d like to think that, though it may be little to some, there was love that existed right at that moment. No mother has had workbooks of some kind on “how to be a mother.” All mothers make mistakes, just like everybody else, but they learn from them and grow. I think that once you start to feel thankful for your mother, then you will start to want to learn with her. Not to be forgotten are those who cannot bare a child yet offer to raise the child of another as if it were her own. I think you need to be thankful for them as well for having that kind of determination.

I am blessed with two mothers, including my mother-in-law. I admit that I have avoided my mother in my adolescent years. However, after learning about her life before becoming a moth-er, my birth and the life she had, made me realize that she is just another person like all of us. Once I started to feel thankful of all her hardship is when my thoughts for her made a 180 degrees turn. As well as for my mother-in-law, I have used our language barrier as a reason to not approach her. But now, I have a yearn-ing to learn more about her through the French language and I am maintaining a healthy relationship with her. I have lots to learn from them as much as I have lots to offer to them as well.

To all the mothers in this world, I’d like to say “well done” and “thank you.” Happy Mother’s Day. Thank you and I love you.

Quand je pense au mois de mai, je pense à la fête des Mères. Moi-même, je suis une maman pendant déjà 7 années maintenant. Quand j’étais jeune, j’ai été dit plusieurs fois, « quand tu deviendras une mère toi-même, tu comprendras ». Dans plusieurs sens, je peux maintenant réfléchir beaucoup sur ces mots. Quand je regarde à mon enfance, je peux maintenant voir combien de troubles j’ai causé à ma mère, tous les soucis et les problèmes.

Toutes les jeunes filles finissent leur enfance, grandissent et devien-nent des femmes qui deviendront par la suite des mères. Pour être une « mère », c’est-à-dire introduire une vie dans ce monde, est une affaire qui est très difficile. Pendant 10 mois entiers une femme prend soin d’une vie en elle, et avec beaucoup de douleurs elle introduit une vie dans ce monde. Cet accouchement comporte beaucoup de détermi-nation, et de cette détermination peut venir de la joie et du bonheur pour certaines ; pour d’autres, c’est de la tristesse, de l’angoisse, de la crainte et même de l’incertitude pour faire un pas dans ce monde de l’inconnu selon leur situation. Peu importe dans quelle situation elles peuvent y être dedans, en ayant la décision de donner naissance à un enfant, en ce moment déjà elle est devenu un être merveilleux.

Cependant, avec sentiment primordial de la crainte et de la terreur, cer-taines peuvent abandonner ou même ne pas donner de l’amour à leur enfant. Certaines peuvent maltraiter l’enfant ou s’y prendre de tout sur l’enfant, et quand rien fonctionne certaines peuvent ignorer l’enfant complètement. Chacun a leur propre histoire.

Le message que j’ai voulu donner s’adresse à ces enfants. Ta mère n’est pas parfaite, juste comme toi. Toutes les mères ont eu leurs vies à vi-vre et sont devenues enceintes. Mais en dépit de tout elle a eu la dé-termination nécessaire pour te donner naissance et cela est quelque chose à bien apprécier. Je voudrais penser que, même si ceci puisse être très peu pour certaines, qu’il y avait de amour qui a existé bien à ce moment. Aucune mère n’a eu des livres sur le sujet de comment être une mère. Toutes les mères font des erreurs aussi, comme n’importe qui, mais elles apprennent et se développent. Je pense qu’une fois que vous commencez à apprécier vos mères, c’est là que vous commence-rez à vouloir apprendre avec elles. Sans oublier celles qui ne peuvent pas avoir un enfant mais offrent leur vie pour élever l’enfant d’une autre personne comme s’il leur appartenait. Je crois bien qu’il faut apprécier le fait qu’elles ont eu cette détermination pour être une mère.

Je me sens chanceuses d’avoir deux mères, y compris ma belle-mère. J’admets que j’ai évité ma mère en mes années d’adolescente. Cepen-dant, après avoir bien compris sa vie avant de devenir une mère, dont ma naissance et la vie qu’elle a vécue, m’a incité à me rendre compte qu’elle est juste une autre personne comme nous. Une fois que je com-mençais à apprécier ma mère et toutes ses difficultés, mes pensées pour elle ont fait un tour complet de 180 degrés. Le même s’appli-que que pour ma belle-mère. J’ai employé notre barrière linguistique comme raison de ne pas l’approcher trop, mais maintenant j’ai un désir d’apprendre plus au sujet d’elle en utilisant la langue française et je maintiens une relation saine avec elle. J’ai pleins de choses à appren-dre de mes deux mères autant que j’ai aussi des choses à leur offrir aussi.

À toutes les mères de ce monde, je voudrais dire « bon travail » et « merci ». Bonne fête des Mères. Merci et je vous aime.

Monkland is a laid back area with an array of small cafes and restaurants but none are quite as sweet as Cho’cola. Since its opening three years ago, Cho’cola has provided customers with delicious chocolates, designer wedding cakes and other treats using only the freshest and wherever possible, house-made ingredients. Everything at Cho’cola is nut-free and friendly staff can cater to customers that have other allergies or dietary restrictions. Most surpris-ingly, Cho’cola also makes a whole section of healthy, veg-etarian (and some vegan) lunch options for take-out or eat in. These include fresh sandwiches on house-made bread; potato, pasta, grain and green salads; wraps and soups. A walk down quaint and undiscovered Monkland would not be complete without a visit to this unique café!

Monkland est une avenue qui comprend plusieurs pe-tits cafés et restaurants. Mais aucun n’est aussi doux que Cho’cola! Depuis son ouverture il y a trois ans, Cho’cola a servi à ses clients de délicieux chocolats, des gâteaux de mariage et d’autres festins utilisant seulement les aliments les plus frais et, dans la mesure du possible, fait maison. Tout chez Cho’cola est sans noix. Si vous avez d’autres aller-gies, le personnel se fera un plaisir de vous cuisiner ce que vous souhaitez tout en suivant vos restrictions diété-tiques. Izakaya Infatuation

As the days get warmer and the sun stays out longer here in Canada, it’s not rare to see streets lined with patios of customers coming out of hibernation, soaking up the sun as they sip on their afternoon coffee or evening beer. On one of my first patio forays this year, as I happily shivered through a cool spring breeze, I was struck by the thought that sitting on a patio outside at the first hint of spring sunlight is just as quintessentially Canadian as walking down snow-lined streets with a Tim Horton’s coffee in hand. And then I wondered: In a country where oven-like humidity keeps its citizen indoors during sunnier months, what would be the Japa-nese equivalent to patio-loving Canadians?

And then it hit me – the izakaya infatuation. An izayaka (loosely translated as a “Japanese bar”) is neither a bar, nor a restaurant. Though a place where one goes to drink, I would hesitate to call it a bar because patrons are not forced to order greasy, overpriced bar “food” when hunger strikes. And although its menu may have seemingly endless options of mouth-watering foods, it’s not exactly a restaurant either. Instead, tapas-like dishes are meant to be ordered throughout the evening, shared with friends and enjoyed with a drink (or three). The way I see it, an iza-kaya is a wonderful excuse to go a little crazy, get a little loud, and order an array of delicious dishes to complement whatever it is you happen to be drinking – and not the other way around.

My own infatuation with izakayas began soon after I arrived in Ja-pan. My feelings only grew stronger after I met Hiro, and the two of us became regulars at some of our favourite date spots.Although yelling over your meal may not be considered the most romantic thing to do on a date, I can’t help but remember all the times I spent enjoying the exotic izakaya experience – not to men-tion Hiro’s company – while living in Japan. Sure, we Canadians may think we prefer the quiet, intimate experience of an Italian restaurant for a romantic evening out, but, admit it, that scene can get old, fast. For couples trying to bring the spark back into their relationship, the dull flame of a candlelit meal just might not light their fire the way an izakaya would.With an izakaya comes the intimacy that a more formal restaurant might not have. Sitting on cushions on the floor allows couples the chance to cozy up to each other, while sharing dishes with your partner makes for a more personal experience. And let’s not for-get the open invitation to drink. Here, the drinks are cheap and they don’t stop coming—unless you absolutely insist. It’s the per-fect atmosphere for usually inhibited couples to open up and let loose.

Hiro and I definitely took full advantage of the izakaya experience. Whenever our relationship needed a boost, we’d head to the near-est izakaya and chat for hours over drinks and good food. And it was never long before we were pleasantly reminded of our infatu-ation – with each other.

Passion Izakaya

Lorsque la température devient clémente et que le soleil brille plus longtemps ici au Canada, il n’est pas rare de voir les rues remplies de terrasses envahies par des gens qui sortent de leur hibernation. Ceux-ci prennent un bain de soleil tout en prenant un café l’après-midi ou une bière en soirée. Lors d’une de mes premières incursions sur les terrasses cette année, pendant que je frissonnais joyeusement à cause d’une fraîche brise printanière, j’ai été frappée de constater que s’asseoir à une terrasse dehors lors des premiers signes du printemps est aussi Canadien que de marcher dans les rues enneigées, une tasse de café Tim Hortons à la main. Puis, je me suis demandée : dans un pays où l’humidité écrasante contraint les citoyens à l’intérieur durant les mois d’été, quel serait l’équivalent Japonais des amoureux de terrasses Canadiens ?

Soudainement, l’idée m’a frappé – la passion pour les izakaya. Un izakaya (traduit approximativement par « bar Japonais ») n’est ni un bar ni un restaurant. Même si c’est un endroit où l’on va boire, j’hésiterais à lui donner le titre de bar puisque les clients ne sont pas forcés à commander de la « nourriture de bar » trop chère et graisseuse lorsqu’ils ont faim. Même si le menu regorge de plats alléchants, ce n’est pas exactement un restaurant. Plutôt, on y déguste des plats de style tapas, commandés durant toute la soirée, partagés entre amis et accompagnant un verre (ou trois). La façon dont je vois les choses est qu’un izakaya est une excellente excuse pour lâcher son fou, parler fort, et commander une variété de plats délicieux qui complémentent ce que vous buvez – et non le contraire.

Ma propre idylle avec les izakayas a débuté peu après mon arrivée au Japon. Mes sentiments sont devenus encore plus forts après avoir rencontré Hiro, et nous sommes devenus des clients réguliers de quelques uns de nos endroits favoris. Bien que devoir crier lors du repas ne semble pas la chose la plus romantique à faire lors d’un rendez-vous galant, je ne peux m’empêcher de me rappeler tous les moments où j’appréciais l’expérience exotique qu’est l’izakaya – sans oublier la compagnie de Hiro – lorsque j’habitais au Japon. Bien sûr, nous Canadiens pensons préférer l’expérience tranquille et intime d’un restaurant italien pour une soirée romantique, mais, avouez-le, cela peut devenir ennuyant très vite. Pour les couples essayant de ramener l’étincelle dans leur relation, la faible flamme d’un dîner aux chandelles ne rallumera pas leur feu de la même façon qu’un izakaya. Avec l’izakaya vient une intimité que des restaurants plus formels n’ont pas toujours. Être assis sur des coussins par terre permet aux couples de s’installer douillettement, et partager des plats ensemble rend l’expérience plus personnelle. Et n’oublions pas l’invitation à boire. Ici, les boissons sont peu chères et n’arrêtent pas d’affluer – à moins que vous n’insistiez absolument. C’est l’atmosphère parfaite pour les couples habituellement timides, pour s’ouvrir à l’autre et relaxer.

Hiro et moi avons définitivement pris avantage de l’expérience des izakayas. Lorsque notre relation avait besoin d’être revigoré, nous allions à l’izakaya le plus près et parlions pendant des heures en compagnie d’un verre et de la bonne nourriture. Cela ne prenait pas longtemps avant de se rappeler joyeusement de notre passion – pour l’autre.

居酒屋心酔

ここカナダも日を追うごとに温かくなり日照時間も延びるにつれて、店先の歩道に並べられたテラス席で冬眠生活から目覚めた人々が太陽を浴びながら午後のコーヒーや晩のビールを楽しむ姿を見かけるのも珍しくはありません。今年初の外飲みで、ウキウキしつつ肌寒い春風に震えながら店先に座っていた私はふと気付きました。春の太陽を感じるや否や店先のテラス席に急ぐのは、雪深い道をTim Hortonのコーヒー片手に歩くのと同じくらい典型的なカナダ人の行動だな・・・と。続いて考えました。太陽が降り注ぐ月、過度の湿度の為に人々が室内に籠る日本で、カナダ人のテラス好きに匹敵するのは何でしょう・・・？

そこで閃きました— 居酒屋への心酔です。「居酒屋」（おおざっぱな訳で「日本のバー」）はバーでもレストランでもありません。確かに飲みに行く場所ではあるのですが、バーと呼ぶにはいささか語弊があると、私は感じています。というのは、客はお腹が空いたからと言って、脂っこい、高過ぎる「バーフード」の注文を強いられる事がないからです。そして、涎の出そうな料理が延と々続くメニューに目移りしながらも、レストランと呼ぶのもちょっと違う気がします。むしろ、友人と共に、小皿料理を突きながら、お酒をちょいちょい（それ以上？）やるのが風習なのです。私の見解では、「居酒屋」とは、ちょっと羽目を外し、ちょっとうるさくなり、そして、その時飲んでいる物を引き立てる為の料理をテーブルに陳列する事—この順序が逆ではダメなのです。

私の居酒屋への心酔は日本へ到着して直ぐに始りました。この気持ちはヒロに出会ってから更に強くなり、私たち二人の幾つかのお気に入りのデートスポット居酒屋の常連にまでなりました。食事を囲んで大声でお喋りするというのは、あまりロマンチックなデートとは思えないかもしれませんが、私の日本での生活の思い出の中には、エキゾチックな居酒屋で過ごした数え切れない程の楽しかった日々— もちろんヒロと一緒に— が、強く残っているのです。ええ、私たちカナダ人にとってロマンチックな夜のデートでは、静かでゆったりとしたイタリアンレストランの方が好まれるかもしれません。でも、正直なところ、それって直ぐに飽きてしまうと思いませんか？

マンネリな二人の関係にちょっと火を灯したい場合、蝋燭の元でのディナーでは、居酒屋の様な火は点かないかもしれないですね。居酒屋と共に味わえるのは、よりフォーマルなレストランでは味わえない、こぢんまりした二人の空間だと言えるでしょう。床の上の座布団に座っていると二人の距離がグッと近付く感覚を味わえ、彼/彼女と料理を分け合っているととても親密な関係を味わえます。そして忘れてはならないのが、お酒の誘惑です。居酒屋ではお酒が安く、どんどんやって来ます—きっぱりと断るまでは。普段は控え目なカップルが打ち解けて開放感を味わうには打って付けの雰囲気なのです。

ヒロと私は、居酒屋の雰囲気を大いに利用していました。二人の関係に少し熱が必要な時は近所の居酒屋へ出向き、美味しいお酒と料理を挟み何時間もお喋りしたものです。そして、そんな事をしながら改めて心酔している事に気付くのです— お互いに・・・。

Qui sont les patriotes?

Personnellement, le mois de mai est mon préféré. Il coïncide avec la fin du printemps et le début de l’été. La température y est agréable et le soleil lumineux.

Au Québec, deux événements viennent marquer ce mois. Premièrement, tout comme au Japon, le deuxième dimanche de mai on y célèbre la fête des Mères. Puis le 25 mai, on commémore la fête des Patriotes, et ce seulement au Québec, car dans le reste du Canada on célèbre plutôt la fête de la Reine.

Mais qui sont ces patriotes et pourquoi les fêter au mois de mai? Nous devons retourner au 19e siècle alors que le Québec, appelé autrefois Bas-Canada, était sous la tutelle de l’Angleterre qui prenait les décisions importantes concernant le Québec. Afin d’avoir un peu plus de contrôle sur leur propre destin, le mouvement des patriotes et leur chef, Louis-Joseph Papineau, se soulèvent contre la couronne britannique. Ils revendiquent la reconnaissance de leur nation, une plus grande liberté politique et l’établissement d’un gouvernement démocratique. La première assemblée publique organisée par des citoyens patriotes a lieu au mois de mai 1837. Après quelques batailles dans les années 1837-39, le mouvement Patriote est dissous en 1839. En 1840, le Canada-Unis est créé, qui comptait seulement quatre provinces à l’époque : l’Ontario, le Québec, le Nouveau-Brunswick et la Nouvelle-Écosse. Malgré des tentatives d’assimiler les Canadiens français en les fusionnant aux autres provinces anglophones, le Québec restera majoritairement francophone. Et son allégeance à la Reine d’Angleterre ne sera jamais très populaire.

Maintenant, vous comprendrez un peu mieux pourquoi au Québec nous préférons fêter la « Journée nationale des patriotes » qui souligne la lutte de ces Patriotes de 1837-1838 pour l’obtention d’un gouvernement plus démocratique.

Who are these ”patriots”?

Personally, May is my favourite month. It signifies the end of spring and the coming of summer. The weather is great, and the sun is luminous.

In Quebec, two events also mark this month. First, just like in Japan, on the second Sunday of May we celebrate Mother’s Day. Then, on May 25th, we celebrate National Patriots’ Day. This commemoration takes place only in Quebec, because the rest of Canada is celebrating Victoria Day.

But who are these “patriots” and why are we recognizing them in May? We must return to the 19th Century where, in Quebec, (called Lower Canada at the time) all the important decisions were still made by England. In order to get a little more control of their own destiny, the Patriots, led by Louis-Joseph Papineau, rose against the British presence in Quebec and the domination over what had previously been an exclusively French territory. They demanded democratic reforms, such as an elected Legislative Council. This was in opposition to the current council at the time, where members were appointed for life by the British Crown. The first public assembly organized by patriotic citizens took place in May of 1837. After some battles, from 1837 to 1839, the Patriot Party was dissolved in 1839. In 1840, Lower Canada (the French area) was merged with Upper Canada (the English area) under the Union Act. Their goal was to assimilate the French-speaking Canadians into the Anglophone culture of the British. But, as you know, Quebecers can be stubborn, and the province remained mainly French. And, on a side note, our allegiance to the Queen of England was never very strong.

Now you might understand a little better why National Patriots’ Day is celebrated in Quebec—we prefer to commemorate the fight of these patriots of 1837-1839, and their success inobtaining a democratic government.

個人的に5月は大好きな月です。ちょうど春が終わると同時に夏の始まる月でもあり、気候も最適で太陽もさんさんと輝いています。

今月ケベック州では二つの行事があります。一つは日本と同様に第二日曜日にある「母の日」です。そしてもう一つは25日の「パトリオット・デー(愛国者の日)」で、ちなみにこれはケベック州だけの祝日です。というのも他の州では「ビクトリア・デー」を祝っているからです。

でもこの「愛国者」って一体誰のことで、どうして5月にその祝日があるのでしょうか?その答えを知るには19世紀に遡る必要があります。当時ケベック州は「低カナダ」と呼ばれ英国の管理下にありました。つまりケベック州に関わる重要な決断は英国が全て下していたわけです。しかし自分達の運命を自分達の手で握ろうと、ルイ・ジョセフ・パピノー (1786 ‐ 1871) の指導のもと愛国者の運動が高まりました。これは元々フランスが以前独占していた領土を巡り英国の存在と支配に反対するものでした。ルイ・ジョセフ・パピノーとその仲間は民主改革を要求しました。これは英国の皇太子が任命した議員による評議会ではなく、投票によって選出した議員による立方評議会を望むものでした。そして愛国市民の主催による最初の公共集会は1837年5月に行なわれました。1837年から1839年に起こった幾つかの戦いの後、1839年に愛国者の運動は解散し、1840年にローワー・カナダ (フランス語圏) とアッパー・カナダ (英語圏) が連合法に基づいて合併しました。合併の目的はフランス語圏のカナダ人を英語圏の英国文化に吸収することにありました。しかしケベック人は頑固なので、結局ケベック州の大部分はフランス語圏に留まったのはご存じの通りです。その上ケベック人の英国女王への忠誠心は一般的ではありませんでした。

「面！」「胴！」「籠手！」「やぁー！」「たぁー！」様々な掛け声が飛び交う道場で、ひときわ威勢を放っているマルタン・ドレさん。それもそのはず、マルタンさんは剣道５段、ここモントリオール剣道クラブの主任教授なのです。

１９８６年、友人の紹介で始めた剣道。身体的ばかりでなく心の鍛錬に重きを置いた剣道の教えに、マルタンさんはすぐに惚れこんでしまったそうです。修業を積んだラヴァル大学のケベック剣道会に、今では恩師、粟賀博先生を補佐する立場として、週に２，３回通い、主任教授であるモントリオール剣道クラブには、在住のケベック市から月に一度、通い続けているそうです。

マルタンさんにとって剣道の一番の魅力とはズバリ、その「奥深さ」だそう。身体的にも精神的にも非常に厳しい武道ではあるけれど、常に習い続け、改善し続ける剣「道」の歩みは、マルタンさんの人生の歩みそのものとなっています。剣道の教えは、日々の生活のそこかしこに反映されていて、例えばエンジニアとして外国への出張、講演が多いマルタンさんは、大勢の外国人の前で話す際も、剣道で培った落ち着きと、あらゆることに対して準備ができているという「姿勢」に支えられて、目標や思いを達成することができるそうです。

もともと異国の文化を学ぶことが大好きというマルタンさん。現在日本語も習得中で、剣道以外の一手段として、日々刻々と日本文化の真実に近づくべく歩んでいます。

さて、そんなマルタンさんの教えを楽しみに待つ剣士たちが、今日もMonreal剣道クラブにずらりと並んでいます。初心者から熟練者まで、あらゆる剣士に大人気のマルタンさん。「敵は己のうちにあり」との思いを胸に、常に自身に厳しく、また生徒たちには親身に真剣に指導をする。謙虚で思いやりあふれるマルタンさん、稽古中の厳しい顔は、休憩時間には、底抜けに明るくて人を楽しませることが大好きな、明るいケベコワスマイルにとって替わります。

マルタンさんから皆さんへのメッセージは、一言でまとめれば、「情熱を持って」ということ。人生をより豊かに生きるため、自分が打ち込める、情熱を注げる何かを見つけてほしいということです。マルタンさんの情熱はとどまるところを知らず。学べば学ぶほど、また次の段階の初心者になるだけ、と達観していて、だからこそ、驕ることなく謙虚に、他の人を敬いながら、そして勿論自分自身も瞬間を満喫しながら、情熱を花開かせているのです。

「ひたむき」という言葉。まっすぐに見つめる一途な眼差し。色々な角度から物事を見ることを学んできた上でたどりつく、ひたむきな瞳を、マルタンさんの「正面」が見せてくれます。こんな瞳になら、一本取られても幸せ！、

A variety of shouts such as “Men! Do! Kote! Yah! Tah!” etc. can be heard flying back and forth at the Dojo. In such a place, Martin Doré-san is remarkably energetic. That makes sense to me since Martin-san is the 5th Dan and the head professor here at Mon-treal Kendo club.

In 1986, he started practicing Kendo after his friend introduced him to it. According to him, he immediately fell in love with the teaching of Kendo. He loves the emphasis puts on not only physical body, but also mind too. Nowadays, he assists Hiroshi Awaga-sensei twice a week at the Quebec Kendokai in Laval Uni-versity, where he trained with his Sensei. He also works as the head professor once a month from his home in Quebec City for the Montreal Kendo Club.

The most attractive part of Kendo for Martin-san is, what he calls, the “Deepness.” Kendo is a very hard Budo, physically and men-tally. However, with a lot of practice and time you can progress in the path of “Ken (or sword),” which is his life itself. The teaching of Kendo is reflected in his whole daily life. For example, he often travels abroad on business as an engineer to give lectures. And when he speaks in front of a group of people, he can achieve his goals and express his ideas with a calmness that he trained for in Kendo and he uses the ”attitude” that is ready for whatever arises when he speaks in front of many foreigners.

He has always enjoyed learning the cultures of foreign countries. Currently he studies Japanese and uses it to get closer to the

truth of Japanese culture that is apart from Kendo.

Well, fencers who look forward to Martin’s teaching, line up at Montreal Kendo Club to-day as well. He is very popular among his stu-dents from beginners to advanced. Keeping a thought of “Enemy is within oneself” in his heart, he is strict with himself, but teaches his students with tender care. Martin is humble and kind. His face is hard during training, but after the training he becomes a cheerful Que-becois who has an incredibly happy charac-ter and loves to make other people happy.

A message from Martin-san to you is, if it can be said in simple words, “Keep passion.” In order to have a rich life, he wants you to find something that you can pour your passion into. His passion doesn’t know where to stop. He takes a long view - “The more you study, the more you become a beginner in the next

level.” Therefore, he is modest and humble, respects others, and of course he enjoys every moment to blossom his passion.

His “Shomen (or his full face)” shows “devotion” and “a single-minded look” gazing straight forward, which he gained from his practice – looking at a matter from different angles. If such eyes take IPPON, I should be happy!

« Men! Do! Kote! Yah! Tah! » : Plusieurs cris retentissent dans le dojo. Dans une telle atmosphère, Martin Doré semble remarquablement énergique. Pas étonnant que cet enseignant-chef du club de kendo de Montréal détienne le 5e dan.

C’est en 1986, après qu’un ami l’ait initié au kendo, que Martin a commencé à pratiquer cet art martial. Il est immédiatement tombé amoureux de cette discipline et de ses enseignements qui n’insistent pas uniquement sur la puissance du corps, mais aussi de l’esprit. Ces derniers temps, il assiste Hiroshi Awaga-sensei deux fois par semaine au Kendokai de Québec, situé à l’université Laval. Il travaille également une fois par mois à Québec à titre d’enseignant-chef du club de kendo de Montréal.

Ce que Martin préfère du kendo est ce qu’il appelle sa « profondeur ». Le kendo est un art martial exigeant sur le plan physique et mental. Cependant, avec beaucoup de temps et d’efforts, il est possible de progresser dans la voie du « ken » (sabre). On pourrait même dire que cette « voie du ken » est le chemin que prend la vie de Martin, tellement les enseignements du kendo se reflètent dans sa vie quotidienne. Par exemple, il voyage régulièrement à l’étranger pour donner des conférences à titre d’ingénieur, et quand il se retrouve devant une foule, c’est avec le calme que lui a enseigné le kendo qu’il réussit à transmettre ses idées et à affronter tout ce qui se présente à lui.

Martin a toujours été curieux par rapport aux différentes cultures. Il étudie le japonais pour se rapprocher de l’essence de la culture japonaise qui transparaît dans le kendo.

Comme à l’habitude, bon nombre de pratiquants sont aujourd’hui réunis pour recevoir l’enseignement de Martin. Il est très populaire parmi ses étudiants, qu’ils soient débutants ou avancés. Gardant toujours à l’esprit que « notre ennemi est en nous », Martin est très exigeant avec lui-même, mais son enseignement trahi sa gentillesse et son humilité. Malgré la dureté de son regard quand il s’entraîne, dès l’entraînement terminé il redevient quelqu’un d’enjoué et dont le bonheur est contagieux.

S’il avait un conseil à donner, ce serait simplement de garder la passion. En effet, il est important d’avoir des passions pour pouvoir avoir une vie riche, et sa passion à lui est sans fin. Il explique : « Plus on étudie, plus on réalise qu’on est toujours un débutant pour la prochaine étape ». Visiblement, Martin est quelqu’un de modeste et de respectueux envers autrui, et il sait savourer chaque moment qu’il consacre à parfaire son art.

Son expression faciale fait preuve de sa dévotion, de sa force de caractère et de sa détermination, traits qu’il a acquis grâce à sa pratique. Avec un tel regard, il est à parier que même le malheur n’oserait l’affronter.

To bump into someone (思いがけなく出会う）

The expression, to bump into someone means when you’re walking down the street, or you’re at a party and you see someone that you didn’t expect to see there. So when you see someone unexpectedly and you talk to them, you bump into them.

To bump into someoneは、思いがけない場所で、思いがけない人に偶然出会った時に使います。道を歩いている時、またはパーティーなどで、まったく予想しない人に出会った時にはbump intoを使って驚きを表現しましょう！

5月に入り、やっとここモントリオールも短い春の気配が感じられるようになりました。そして、すぐに夏に突入ですね。桜は見れないものの、花粉症で春の訪れを感じてる方もいらっしゃるのではないでしょうか。今回もまた、Dr. Englishではなく、前回のようにDr. Japanese （日本語）についてみてみたいと思います。

形容詞（けいようし）：Adjectiveというと堅苦しく聞こえますが、どの言語でも形容詞はとてもパワーを持っていますね。以前お話しましたが、日本語は「主語」を省略することが多いです。場合によっては「主語」は必要ではないと言い切ることができます。主語がなくても、動詞や形容詞は必要ですね。英語、フランス語を母国としている人には、日本語の語順－動詞は必ず文の最後にくる－という規則になれるのに少し時間がかかるかもしれません。ただ、日本語の構造をみると意外と簡単にできてるんですよ。「が」「で」「に」などの助詞をMarkerとして、これは、目的語なんだよ、これは主語なんだよとヒントを与えてくれます。語順は、－動詞は必ず文の最後にくる－以外は大して大事ではないんですよね。助詞と単語さえが上手に組み合わされていれば。

例えば：Oliver is going to eat Sushi with his friend at Japanese restaurant on Saturday.

日本語では、どう言いますか？

オリバーくんが、土曜日に　友達と　日本食レストランで　すしを　食べます。

（オリバーくんがね、土曜日に　友達と　日本食レストランで　すしを　食べるんだよ。）と言えます。この、土曜日に　友達と　日本食レストランですしを　は、日本語では、この通りの順番でなく

ても大丈夫です。オリバーくんが、友達と　すしを　日本食レストランで　土曜日に　食べます。などとも言えます。「に」「と」「で」などの助詞がちゃんと、セットであっていれば、自由に動かしてもいいんです。そして、これらの助詞は、必ず単語の後にきます。英語では、on Saturday, at a restaurant と前にきますね。これも、英語、フランス語を母国語としている人には、ちょっと慣れるための練習が必要です。

話は戻りますが、私は、形容詞が大好きです。絵に色を塗っていくように、表現をどんどん豊かにしてくれるような気がします。ここで、ひとつ面白いのは、「好き」という言葉。英語やフランス語では、「好き」は動詞ですね。ただ、日本語は形容詞なのです。例えば:I like sports. スポーツが好きです。→Sports are likable (to me.)　これを、英語やフランス語を母国語としている人に教えてみてください。きっと驚かれますよ。でも、これは日本語の文化、日本人の表現方法からなったものではないかと思います。日本語は「ある、いる」の文化。英語は「Have　もっている」の文化とよく言います。I have money. （お金があります。）She has a handsome husband. （ハンサムなだんな様がいるんだって。）

表現の仕方で、日本人がストレートに言えないのもこの辺からきているんでしょう。日本語を学べば学ぶたび、英語やフランス語も分かるようになります。みなさんも、モントリオールいる間に、どんどん、現地の日本語に興味のある人に教えたり、話したりする機会を設けてくださいね！

World Partnership Walk

1985年、バンクーバーにて一人の女性の発案で、アジア、アフリカの貧困国への募金を目的としたチャリティー・ウォークが開催され、約1千人の参加者と５万５千ドルの寄付を集めた。

この大きな一歩は、25年の歳月を経て今ではカナダ全国９都市において、企業、チーム、個人のボランティアが参加するカナダ最大のチャリティ・イベントとなっている。昨年は約４万人が参加、680万ドルが寄付された。すべての寄付金は、アガカーン財団カナダが支援する国際開発イニシアチブによって直接貧困国に届けられる。１セントたりとも、財団の運営などに使われることはない。届けられた寄付金は、経済復興や水の衛生管理、若年、女性の教育、地域組織の強化など、地域コミュニティにより決定された本当に必要なプロジェクトへ投入される。

モントリオールのWalkは、６月６日（日）にオールドモントリオールにて行われる。参加方法は、ウェブサイトからレジスターし、クレジットカードにて寄付するか、当日の10時から現地でもレジスターできる。レジスターには、個人、チーム、企業での登録方法があり、誰でも参加できる。

The World Partnership Walk took its first strides in 1985, thanks to the verve of a group of volunteers from Vancouver’s Ismaili Women’s Organization Committee. Driven by a desire to give back to the impoverished countries they had grown up in, the group persuaded nearly 1,000 walkers to don their sneakers for the fight against glob-al poverty and raised $55,000.

More than 25 years later, the Walk is held in nine cities across Canada where corporate, individual and team supporters and volunteers have collectively helped to raise more than $50 million in support of international development ini-tiatives, making it the largest and most successful event of its kind in Canada.All funds raised by the World Part-nership Walk (100%) go directly to international development ini-tiatives supported by Aga Khan Foundation Canada – not one cent is spent on administration. These funds support meaningful proj-ects identified and implemented by local communities – projects that revitalize a rural economy, ensure clean water and sanitation, strengthen community-based organizations and educate new generations of girls and women. Funds raised by the Walk also help AKFC to leverage additional sup-port from major donors like the Canadian International Develop-ment Agency (CIDA) .

La Marche des partenaires mondiaux

La Marche des partenaires mon-diaux a fait ses premiers pas en 1985, grâce à la verve d’un groupe de bénévoles du Comité d’orga-nisation des femmes ismailies de Vancouver. Poussés par le désir d’être reconnaissants envers les pays pauvres dans lesquels ils avaient grandi, les membres du groupe ont convaincu presque mille marcheurs de chausser leurs espadrilles pour lutter contre la pauvreté dans le monde, et ont ainsi réussi à amasser 55 000 $.

Plus de vingt-cinq après, la Marche a lieu dans neufs villes du Canada. Des supporters et des bénévoles – entreprises, particuliers et équi-pes – ont aidé collectivement à re-cueillir plus de 50 millions $ pour soutenir des initiatives de déve-loppement international, ce qui fait de cette Marche la plus grande et la plus réussie des manifesta-tions de ce genre au Canada.Tous les fonds réunis par la Marche des partenaires mondiaux (100 %) vont directement aux initiatives de développement international de la Fondation Aga Khan Canada. Aucune somme ne sert à défrayer des coûts administratifs. Ces fonds permettent de soutenir d’impor-tants projets définis et mis en œuvre par des collectivités loca-les – projets redonnant vie à une économie rurale, amenant l’eau potable et l’hygiène, renforçant les organisations communautaires et éduquant de nouvelles généra-tions de filles et de femmes.
