The Problem:

Appleyard, R and Le, A.T. (1995)

Appleyard R and Le AT (1995) Medical Research Infrastructure Funding in Western Australia. A Report Prepared for the Western Australian Technology and Industry Advisory Council.

Appleyard, R and Le, A.T. (1995)

Brought us three things: 1) Medical and Health Research Infrastructure Fund (MHRIF)

2) State Health Research Advisory Council (SHRAC)

3) Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research (formerly Western

Australian Institute for Medical Research)

Appleyard, R and Le, A.T. (1995) “The presence of state government-supported research institutes in Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland has not only enhanced a collaborative research culture in those states through interdisciplinary research but also increased the researchers’ capacity for problem solving and broadened their research horizons.”

“On grounds that such an arrangement in Western Australia would yield similar advantages, enhance the success of research teams in obtaining peer-review research grants, retain and also attract distinguished medical and health researchers, and contribute to the State’s economic growth through increased export of medical and health services and lower health costs, etc., the Report recommends that a Medical Research Institute, similar in purpose to those in Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland, be established in Western Australia by the year 2000 and be supported by the State Government through grants that cover a high proportion of infrastructure.”

Outcomes/impact

From my laboratories research, families all round the world no longer have to play “genetic roulette” when they have children. Laing, N. G. (2012). "Genetics of neuromuscular disorders." Crit Rev Clin Lab Sci 49: 33-48.

Appleyard R and Le AT (1995) Medical Research Infrastructure Funding in Western Australia. A Report Prepared for the Western Australian Technology and Industry Advisory Council. One of the recommendations of Appleyard and Le was that when the Western Australian Institute for Medical Research was established, then the recommended short-term infrastructure support for researchers outside the Institute (MHRIF) should be stopped.
