YOUR BREITLING CHRONOMETER

A chronometer is a high-precision instrument that has successfully passed theentire battery of tests imposed by the COSC (Swiss Official ChronometerTesting Institute), a neutral and independent body which individually testseach movement according to the prescriptions in force.

The certification test for wristwatch chronographs with quartz oscillatorsconsists in observing each movement for 11 days and 11 nights, in severalpositions and at 3 different temperatures (8°C, 23°C, 38°C). To earn theprestigious chronometer label, a movement’s performances must meet 7 verystrict criteria, including a daily variation in rate of within ±0.07 seconds,corresponding to an annual precision of ±25 seconds. The variation in rateof the SUPERQUARTZ™ caliber fitted in your BREITLING watch far and aboveexceeds these demands, achieving a rate of ±15 seconds a year.

The term “chronometer” should not be confused with that of “chronograph”,which is a complicated watch fitted with an additional mechanism enablingthe measurement of the duration of an event. A chronograph is not neces-sarily chronometer-certified, but all BREITLING chronographs carry the much-coveted title of “chronometers”.

PREPARING THE WATCH FOR USE

DATE ADJUSTMENT – TIME-SETTING

1. Unscrew the water-resistant crown in an anti-clock-wise direction.

2. Pull the crown out to position 2 and turn the hoursforwards to adjust the date which jumps at midnight.

3. Pull the crown out further to position 3 and adjustthe hour and minute.

4. Push the crown back to position 1. Press it gently,turning it gently in a clockwise direction, then tight-en it again until you feel some resistance. Do notforce!

USING THE CHRONOGRAPH

I. MEASURING A SINGLE SHORT TIME

1. Press pushpiece A to start the chronograph. Hand 3shows the measurement in seconds.

2. Stop the measurement by pressing pushpiece A oncemore. The measurement is done in hours (totalizer 1),minutes (hand 2), seconds (hand 3) and 1/10ths of asecond (totalizer 4).

3. Return the chronograph to zero by pressing push-piece B.

II. MEASURING A SHORT TIME WITH SPLIT TIME

1. Press pushpiece A to start the chronograph. Hand 3shows the measurement in seconds.

2. To check an intermediate or split time without inter-rupting measurement of the total time, press push-piece B.

3. To return to the display of the time being measured,press pushpiece B: hand 3 measuring the seconds,and if necessary hand 2 measuring the minutes, willthen “catch up” with the measured time.

III. MEASURING AN INTERRUPTED SHORT TIME

1. Press pushpiece A to start the chronograph. Hand 3allows you to follow the measurement in seconds.

2. To interrupt the measurement, press pushpiece Aonce more. To restart the time measurement, presspushpiece A. This procedure makes it possible toadd several short times.

3. The chronograph is reset to zero by pressing push-piece B, once the final measurement has been stopped.

ADJUSTING ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS

If a totalizer hand does not return to zero normally (after a battery changeor inappropriate handling), proceed in the following manner:

1. Desynchronized hour totalizer: with the crown in posi-tion 2, press pushpiece A repeatedly until the hand returns to the initial position.

2. Desynchronized minute totalizer: with the crown in position 2, press pushpiece B repeatedly until the hand returns to the initial position.

3. Desynchronized seconds totalizer: with the crown in position 3, press pushpiece A repeatedly until the hand returns to the initial position.

4. Desychronized 1/10th of a second totalizer: with the crown in position 3, press pushpiece B repeatedly until the hand returns to the initial position.

SUN COMPASS

Your BREITLING chronometer may be used as a sun compass, thus enablingyou to determine the Northerly-Southerly direction. For regions that haveinstated daylight saving time, subtract one hour when directing the watch.

In the Northern hemispherePoint the hour hand precisely towards the sun. In relationto the watch dial, the point located midway betweenthe current time and 12 o’clock indicates the South, theNorth being exactly opposite.

In the Southern hemispherePoint the hour-marker located at 12 o’clock on the dialprecisely towards the sun. In relation to the watch dial,the point located midway between the current time and12 o’clock indicates the North, the South being exactlyopposite.

SPECIAL CHARACTERISTICS

QUICK TIME-ZONE CHANGE

Your BREITLING chronometer is equipped with an hourhand enabling quick time-zone change. The latter maybe adjusted in one-hourly increments, either forward orback.

1. Unscrew the water-resistant crown in an anti-clock-wise direction and pull it out to position 2. Forwards or backwardsadjustment of the time, as well as the date change at midnight, is donewithout affecting the rating or precision of the minutes and seconds.

2. After this process, carefully tighten the water-resistant crown again.

MAINTENANCE

Your BREITLING chronometer is a sophisticated instrument which is constantly subjected to a wide variety of stresses and strains. Within a verysmall volume, a large number of components contribute to handling all thefunctions. Their mechanical action inevitably leads to a certain amount ofwear and tear, which may be controlled by maintenance consisting of renew -ing the lubrication and replacing worn components. Like any precisionmeasurement instrument, your watch must be regularly maintained inorder to function at its highest level of potential: we recommend a regularservice every two years, while the complete overhaul should be scheduledabout every five years. Your authorized BREITLING dealer will be pleased tohandle this for you.

WATER-RESISTANCE

The movement of your chronometer is protected by a complex case fittedwith gaskets to ensure its water-resistance. Under the influence of variousexternal agents – perspiration, chlorinated or salt water, cosmetics, fra-grances or dust – these gaskets gradually deteriorate and must be regularlyreplaced. If used intensively in water, we recommend that this be doneonce a year as part of a service. If the watch is only occasionally used inwater, this operation may be carried out every two years. Moreover, a

Used batteries and used watch componentsshould not be disposed in litters, but correctlyrecycled according to local regulations. We recom-mend the disposal of such parts via your watchdealer. You will thereby contribute to environ-mental and public health protection.

according to the conditions in which they are worn. In particular, water,cosmetics and perspiration accelerate the aging process. A metal or syn-thetic BREITLING bracelet is thus better suited to activities involving fre-quent contact with water or humidity.

BREITLING metal cases and bracelets are made from the finest alloys andguarantee sturdiness and wearer comfort. Regular cleaning by rinsing andbrushing in clear water will keep your watch shiny. This operation is strong-ly recommended after each immersion in salty or chlorinated water. Forwatches fitted with a leather strap, proceed in the same manner, whileavoiding getting the strap wet.

WHAT TO AVOID

Like any valuable objects, BREITLING chronometers deserve special care. Itis important to protect them from jarring and knocks by hard objects, andnot to expose them to chemical products, solvents, dangerous gases, ormagnetic fields. Moreover, your BREITLING chronometer is designed to runsmoothly at temperatures ranging between 0°C and 50°C.

BREITLING models are water-resistant to varying degrees. The extent of thewater-resistance, expressed in meters (M) is a standard value and does notindicate an absolute depth of immersion. The crown and pushpieces mustnot under any circumstances be operated under water or when the watch iswet. The table below indicates the conditions in which your watch may rea-sonably be used, according to its degree of water-resistance.
