What is theWhat is theEuropean Geologist professional title? European Geologist professional title?

The title held by a professional geologist means that the holder has achieved suitable academic training and a level of professional experience, skill and competence to perform tasks within their professional practice. It also means that the geologist undertakes continuing education and training, demonstrating a personal commitment to stay up to date and informed within the sphere of their professional work.

Four pillars underlie the European Geologist title:

•Academic Qualifications;

•Professional Experience;

•Code of Ethics;

•Continuing Professional Development (CPD).

Page 11: Come si diventa EuroGeologo? How to become EurGeol?

Where is the title recognised?Where is the title recognised?

The European Geologist title is a professional title created by the European Federation of Geologists which recognises the ability to deliver a high quality of services within the practice of geology.

The training and experience underlying the title are being harmonised. This will mean that the title will be recognisable in all European countries and so act as a passport to professional practice in Europe, thereby encouraging free movement of professionals.

There are reciprocity recognition agreements being set with the American Institute of Professional Geologists (AIPG) and the Canadian Council of Professional Geologists (CCPG).

On a practical level, European Geologists are recognised by the mineral reporting authorities in Australia, Canada, South Africa and London as professionals accredited to sign reports on mineral resources within their area of expertise and in the valuation of mining companies quoted on the Stock Exchanges.

EurGeol International RecognitionEurGeol International RecognitionThe training, competence and experience underlying the European Geologist (EurGeol) title are recognised across Europe as passport for professional practice in the European Union countries, thereby encouraging free movement of professionals.

EurGeol recognised as Competent Person in Europe

The mineral sector is one of the main employers for geologists and the recognition of the professional competence, integrity and ethics are very advanced in this area. The recognition of EurGeol title holders as Competent Persons able to sign off reports has been extended.

PERC is the organisation responsible for setting standards for public reporting of exploration results, mineral resources, and mineral reserves by companies listed on markets in Europe. As a member of CRIRSCO, the PERC Reporting Standard is fully aligned with the CRIRSCO Reporting Template. PERC is established formally as a not-for-profit organisation ('asbl') registered in Brussels by its four founding organisations, the Institute of Materials, Minerals, and Mining (IOM3), the European Federation of Geologists, the Geological Society of London and the Institute of Geologists of Ireland.

EFG is one of the founding members of PERC and thus its national associations are considered as Recognised Professional Organisations (RPO) qualifying European Geologists as Competent Persons.

Application procedureApplication procedureAn application for the European Geologist (EurGeol) title must be submitted through one of the EFG's Licensed Bodies which are authorised to award the title. These Licensed Bodies are the:

Institute of Geologists of Ireland (IGI) Italian National Council of Geologists (CNG)Geological Society of London (GSL) Spanish Association of Professional Geologists (ICOG)Swiss Association of Geologists (CHGEOL)International Licensed Body (ILB)

The ILB is operated by EFG for applicants who are not members of one of the above mentioned National Licensed Bodies. The applications to the ILB need to be presented by a National Vetting Committee (NVC). This gives two routes towards the award of the EurGeol title:

National Licensed Bodies (NLBs): If you have successfully completed the professional review process for the national qualification awarded by one of the National Licensed Bodies above, you can benefit from a simplified election process to obtain the European Geologist title.

International Licensed Body (ILB):If you are not member of one of the national associations having their own Licensed Bodies you will need to apply through the ILB.

To qualify for the award of the title of European Geologist, an applicant must:

1.be a member of one of the National Associations within the EFG or hold an approved professional qualification awarded by an Associate Member of the EFG subject to the agreement of Council;

2.provide evidence of a professional European connection in the case of being a non-European and not residing in Europe (see Statutes for the definition of Europe as applied by the EFG);

3.hold a recognised degree or equivalent qualification in geology or related subject;

4.have relevant postgraduation experience in the profession and practice of geology;

5.be supported by two European Geologists (in Italy, one + an Italian geologist) who have personal knowledge of the applicant;

6.have completed and submitted an application form including a Professional Practice Report;

7.have satisfied the EFG that they meet the requirements for award of the title of European Geologist through submission of supporting documentation and a professional interview; and

8.have provided a written commitment to undertake a programme of Continuing Professional Development

How to maintain the title ?How to maintain the title ?In order to maintain the professional title, an EurGeol must1. Pay annual subscription fees to the Licensed Body2. Provide to the Licensed Body a record of Continuing Professional Development activities carried out in the previous year.

Failure of carrying out these obligations will result in exclusion of the EurGeol-register.

The provision of an annual CPD record is a requirement for maintaining the EurGeol title. ILB European Geologists submit their records electronically via the EurGeol tool. EFG provides the same service to the EurGeols of other Licensed Bodies, but its use is optional.

Once a return is provided to the Licensed Body, the EurGeol should assume that it has been received and is satisfactory unless there is correspondence indicating the contrary. A small number of returns are randomly selected for audit and in these cases the Licensed Body might ask for further supporting information.

Continuing Professional DevelopmentContinuing Professional DevelopmentEuropean Geologists in employment should record a minimum of 60 points in each year.Up to 30 points may be carried over from the previous year.At least 15 points should be recorded annually under Professional Practice, along with some points under at least two other activity types.

Self-directed Study comprises an activity that provides:

• an increased breadth or depth of geological knowledge; or

• an improved understanding of a subject relevant to the European Geologist’s employment (e.g. reading to keep abreast of published information)
