It is a special privilege for me to present the report ofComhairle na Mumhan on the Provincial activities

during the past special year in Munster.

Ni neart go cur le ch6ileTo achieve our goals within the Province we need unityof purpose among all the units working together as a

team. We acknowledge the co-operation of the CountyBoards and of the Branches throughout the province inhelping to achieve our goals. Fleadh na Mumhan, the

premier event in our Comhaltas calendar has expanded

considerably in recent years and is an excellent

showcase of the wonderful work being done by all unitsthroughout the province. The hosting branch, Caladh

an Treoigh deserve the highest praise for the staging of2013 Fleadh in University of Limerick. There were also

many other successful activities and promotions duringthe year.

Munster Branches show a strength in numbers as

well as worKorce. Munster members continue toprovide opportunities, continue to promote our

cultural traditions through the many sessions, classes,

exhibitions, performance s etc. throughout this province.

The hosting and organisation of the County Fleadh, is

a privileage for the local community and locality. The

Fleadh is administered by the local branch/branches

through the guidance of the County Board. It is a

major undertaking and I would like to congratulate and

express a sincere focal buiochas to all hosting branches.

We are also aware that there are quite a few branches

that are not as active as others. Activity attracts new

members and new members can often energise the

unit. Some of the activities organised during the past

year include Branch music session, joint sessions

with neighbouring branches, singing nights, concerts,

c6ilithe, wren boy groups, visit to hospitals and nursing

homes, rang Gaeilge or ciorcal Gaeilge, bus outings,

participation in F6ilte Cheoil, and Fleadhanna, Ceol

an Gheimhridh, Pl6aracha, Scoraiocht, providingentertainment at community events, etc. etc. I wish to

pay tribute to each and every one, to officers, members,

tuto rs/ te ache rs, frie nds who worked effi cie ntly, tirele s sly

and diligently in so many different ways to promote

Comhaltas all over this Province.

BALLRAiOCHTTar isteach sa ChomhaltasMembership numbers throughout Munster show an

overall decrease in senior categories and an increase in

Junior. The increased overall in Waterford during thepast year is most encouraging. Two branches did notregister during the past year, ie. Cr Tradraighe and

Moyvane/Lisselton. However, a C6ad Mile F6ilte forCeoltoiri an Ghleanna (Glenbeigh), the latest additionto the Munster family of branches..

The "New Branch" Incentive continues regarding theannual insurance premium cover which will be provided'without payment'for the first year of the new craobh.

The formation of new branches in areas not already

catered for by Comhaltas, is always a very welcome

development and can be a great boost to Co. Boards,

introducing new blood and new enthusiasm. But it isalso vital to the well being of Comhaltas that existingbranches continue to be active in the promotion of ourideals and to ensure this, Athnuachdn or Renewal is

essential. The booklet, 'Athnuachin Branch Renewal",

which was launched at last year's Convention and

distributed to all branches present, is a very useful guide

to existing branches as well as new branches.

CRUINNITHE5 Comhairle na Mumhan meetings were held since last

Convention. National Congress and all Ard Chomhairlemeetings were attended by Munster delegates.

Communication is vital to ensure the grassroots

receive all details of Comhaltas activities at all levels

as quickly as possible. National Congress returned to

Cultrirlann na hEireann. Counties are reminded to plan

their meeting dates following Comhairle na Mumhanmeetings. Congratulations to each of the Munsternominees on their successes at Congress 2013. Tom6s O

ADJUDICATORS SEMINARThe Munster Adiudicators Seminar was held on 23124

March in Devon Lnn, Templeglantine. 99 applicationswere received. \umbers had to be curtailed with a

final attendance of ;4 from all counties in Munster.The course \ras efiremely well attended by all on bothdays. Man,v,young potential adjudicators together withsome experienced in adjudication were present. Thehighly experienced tutors, P6draig O Riain, Siobh6nNi Chonar6in, Nfichdal Mac Aogain, Deirdre Scanlonprovided an excellent fwo day course, packed withdetailed information and guidelines, which had been

well researched and excellently delivered. The booklet,N6tai do Mholt6iri (amended) was distributed toall together with a CD. It was recommended that theyounger adjudicators would seek experience either as

assistant adjudicators or Adjudicators' Clerks and thatthey would forward details later of experience gained.

CEOLAN GHEIMHRIDHCeol an Gheimhridh, originally established toprovide inter-branch activity, was revived in Munsterin 2OO2 and continued in 20L3 with participationfrom 53 branches in 5 counties competing in Music,Song. Dance, Recitation, Scdalaiocht, Storytelling, Set

& C6ili Dancing. Qualifiers came forward to MunsterFinals from Cork, Clare, Kerry, Limerick & Tipperaryat Cappamore, Co Limerick on 17th February. Manycompetitions had full entry and standards wereexceptionallyhigh in most competitions as commentedon by adjudicators. Many competitions having fullnumbers were keenly contested. The organising Coisteof Maigh Rua / An Cheapach Mh6r provided greatfacilities and catered so well for everybody. The wholeevent was well organised. SCORAIOCUT & PLEARACHAFormat for competitions...Up to three branches may

combine their talents to produce shows.

While many branches did not participate at Munsterlevel, the provincial qualifiers did exceptionally well at

the National finals in Clasach.

Pl6aracha - Ros Cr6 and Caladh an Treoigh were theMunster entrants. Ros Crd gave a reallytop performancewhen coming second in the Senior Pl6aracha at theNational Finals in Clasac in March 2013.

Ros Cr6 and Tirlach Sheasta represented the Provincein Pl6aracha na nOg. The A11 Ireland crown was wonby Thlach Sheasta. De6naimid comhghairdeas leo.

This competition was hotly contested by Leinster &Connaught branches providing great entertainmentand participation.

53rd Fleadh na Mumhan 2013 was hostedby Cr. Caladh an Treoigh in University ofLimerick. Caladh an Treoigh founded in2009 is a comparatively young branch to takeon such a major event. During the year the

Fleadh na Mumhan Committee developed an extensiveplan of entertainment and a packed programme of specialevents. The launch of Fleadh Cheoil na Mumhan 2013 atPlassey House UL was an auspicious occasion. We wereprivileged to have the President of UL, Don Barry, Miche6lO Sriilleabh6in, as well as Seanad6ir Labhrds 6 Murchri werein attendance. The varied events held during the week priorto Fleadh included Fun Day, Celebrity Bainisteoir, Concertwith Liadan in a remarkable setting, Monaleen Church.Gl6r na mBan 2 provided an outstanding night of singing insuitably decorated Kilmurray Church.Lectures "Come West Along the Road" by Nicholas Carolan,"Dance in Limerick in the 20th Century" by Dr. OrfhlaithNi Bhriain. "Gathering Cross Cultural Bonny Boys" by Dr.Sandra foyce, Robbie McMahon Film, "Lsst Night as I LayDreaming". Workshops with Orfhlaith Ni Bhriain, EmmaO'sullivan, and Goitse members, and Con'Fada'O Drisceoil.The Walls of Limerick Concert was an innovative ideaprovided a memorable exhibition of all dancing, traditional,cdili, sets, steps, set dances as well as Norwegian Folk andCeltic dancing.

Bliain na Cruinne Award Night held onThursday was indeed a very special Munsterevent. It provided us with the opportunity tosalute the great cultural heroes and heroineswho have left the shores of Ireland (and

those who had returned home) and brought with them themusic, song dance and language of their homeland. SpecialMedallions were presented in recognition of service to IrishTraditional Music, Song and Dance, The Awardees: MickMoloney, D6mhnall de Barra, Cagney Family, St. ColmcilleC6ili Band, Helen Gannon, PatsyMoloney, Theresa Sheehan,

Dan &Maureen Murphy, togetherwith their guests providedmagnificent performances of our culture during a night fullof memories and reminiscences.One of the highlights was the Tribute Concert to MickMoloney, one of Limerick's famous sons. The array of topclass talent that appeared on stage that night was a fitting ofa man that has gained international recognition.

The Official Opening of the Fleadh was held on the Tuesdayin Irish World Academy of Music and Dance. The SouvenirProgramme was once again an excellent publicationbeautifully produced containing many learned articles, as

well as photographs of interest.

The open air Entertainment Gig Rig which was locatedadjacent to the Concert Hall .provided a feast of traditionalmusic song, and dance as well as performances fromKongsberg Spel-og Dansarlag, Norway, which was muchappreciated by locals and visitors to the Fleadh.

Enjoyable Set/C6ilithe were held on Saturday and Sundayafternoon but due to the unforgettable heat wave attendanceswere not as large as expected.

There were manyfavourable comments on the high standardsattained on the various competitions over the weekend. Wecongratulate all competitors and teachers/Tutors/Parentson their participation. Munster qualifiers did quite well atFleadh Cheoil na hEireann i nDoire winning63 All IrelandTitles as well as 90 other prizes. Kerry brought home thelargest number of medals having reached a total of 42 (Mayo41) followed by Cork, 38 and Clare 34, Limerick25.

Fleadh na Mumhan Coiste is most grateful to all the generousSponsors as well as the high level of support from Co. Boardsand Branches throughout the Province. The subscriptionsfrom the Comhaltas units each year show solidarity with theorganising committee and is much appreciated.

MOLTOIRiA very fine team of adjudicators were assembled for theFleadh and we are most grateful to them for their excellentco-operation and help. It is very regrettable that one ofthose dedicated adjudicators has sadly passed to her eternalreward since then. Caroline |udge Fegan, who was born inBritain and a member of the famed Colmcille Cdili Band,had served us well at the Fleadh on two previous occasions.

Fleadh na Mumhan broke new ground in 2013 in beinghosted in a third level College of Education. The facilities atUL were top class and we appreciate the wonderful all roundco-operation received. The Irish World Academy of Musicand Dance played a pivotal role in the successful staging ofthe Fleadh. Tdimid thar a bheith buioch d6ibh.

We are truly indebted to the Fleadh Na Mumhan Coiste ledbyNiall Keegan, the officers, committee members and friendsfor their total commitment and professional approach to allaspects of the Fleadh, which would not have been such a

SCOIFONN &AMHRANThe Counly Scoil Fonn & Amhrdn days were held inLimerick and Tipperary . This brings slow air playing and

the art of traditionai singing to a wider audience, but withmore promotion there is scope for further expansion.

The Munster Scoil Fonn & Amhrtin day held in coniunctionwith Fleadh na \tumhan at U.L. again provedverysuccessful,having a very fine attendance of 62 students

The tutors, Catherine Clochessy, Elaine Cormican, Louise

Keating, Denise Kelleher, Orfhlaith Ni Bhriain, and Edel

Vaughan provided excellent tuition at the Master Classes.

These master classes have opened up the availability of thistype of tuition to many young musicians and singers over theyears. It is strongly recommended that all counties organise

this beneficial progranrme in 2014 prior to their Co. Fleadh

Cheoil, which will be grant-aided by Comhairle na Mumhan.

SLIDE & POLKASlide & Polka Playing: It is heartening to see increased interestin Polka and Slide playing and the holding of these classes at

Fleadh na Mumhan since 1997 has played a significant role

in giving Polka & Slide playrng its due recognition. Tuitionthis year as provided by Con Herbert.

SET & CEILI OANCINGThe C6ili and Set dancing competitions which began on

Friday morning and continued over the weekend. drew

capacity attendance and produced a fantastic atmosphere

in a spacious venue. Over 170 teams had qualified and

performed in both set and C6ili dancing competitions

staged over three days. |unior age groups attracted a capacity

audience that really enjoyed the excitement and enthusiasm

generated by the teams and their supporters. Exceptionally

high standards were evident in these competitions.

Set dancing is enjoying its popularity nights and social

weekends while cdili dances remain strong in some areas

only.

PERPETUAL TROPHIESWe have tried to get all trophies back before Fleadh na

Mumhan so that they could be properly reviewed and

catalogued and have failed due to late returns. Could we

ask as a special favour that Co. Officers would follow up to

their County trophies' winners of 2013 to arrange return ofall trophies, suitably engraved (if you wish) before lst May'

2014 so that the necessary review may be finalised. One new

trophy was presented, by Irish World Academy of Music &Dance in memory of the late Patrick McHugh, for Senior

FLEADH NUAThe 39th consecutive Fleadh Nua was hosted once again byEnnis in 2013. The comprehensive programme commenced

on Sunday 20th May and concluded on Monday 27th

during which time over 70 events took place, including:concerts, sessions, set dancing & C6ilithe, lectures, singers

club, workshops, ranganna Gaeilge, exhibitions, Culturalparade, Aifreann Traidisirinta. Fleadh Nua continued tohost National Set and C€ili Dancing competitions as wellas sean n6s dancing competitions. NASCComhairle na Mumhan again encourages units to support

Nasc - the Comhaltas National Draw. All branches wouldbenefit from extra funding to paybranch insurance, subsidise

a singing class, pay for travel when visiting another branch

MOLAN6ICEThe Aos Og continued to play a vital role in Comhaltas and

we are lucky to have such a strong youth membership inour Provincial affiliations. It is heartening to see the highrate of participation in events such as Fleadhanna, Ceol an

Gheimhridh, Scoil Fonn &Amhr6n, Fdilte Cheoil, concerts,

sessions, etc. A noticeable increase in |unior membership

was noted in the past year. It is vital for the future ofComhaltas that youth is catered for and encouraged in ourunits. To retain our youth in the organisation we need to

facilitate activities for them and to give them a meaningfulrole in the various units.

The promotion of our native language is one of the mainaims of Comhaltas. Comhaltas holds An Ghaeilge irr veryhigh regard as it is the core element which bonds the various

threads of our cultural heritage. An increasing number ofbranches in the Province are making worthwhile efforts.

Some are now running regular classes, while others are

organising Ciorcal Cainte.

The numbers entering for Comhr6 Gaeilge are improving.Minor alterations suggested for the competition should

make it more attractive in future. This event at the Fleadh

requires further promotion in all units. Spoken Irish has

no\f'acquired greater status in the Secondary School exam

s1.stem. Participation in Comhr6 Gaeilge at the Fleadh can

be of great benefit to students.

The use of names, as Gaeilge is being promoted but some

counties seem to be much more successful than others.

Sloinnte Uile Eireann - All Ireland Surnames book whichwas distributed by Comhairle na Mumhan to Comhaltasunits in the Province a few years ago was also presented tothe new Branches present at last year's Convention. Thispublication is proving a valuable aid in the use of Irishsurnames and all Comhaltas units should have a copy tohand .when filling in membership and Fleadh entries

Focal ar Fhocal. The new publication supersedes the

original Focal ar Fhocal of five units. This new booklet is

available from Cultfrlann na Eireann. A Training Seminaron the use of this publication was held on Saturday 9thFebruary in Bni Borir organised by Meitheal Boni Region.

23 venues throughout the Province: Adare, Ballincollig,Ballyduff Upp.r, Cashel, Clonmel, Corofin, Dungarvan,Ennis, Ennistymon, Fermoy, Freemount, Kilrush, Killaloe,

Listowel, Milltown Malb ay, Rockchapel, Skibbereen, SouthKerry Templeglantine, Tralee, Tulla, Waterford, Youghal.

Seisitin is an excellent programme: it has gone fromstrength to strength. A stage show of Irish music, song and

dance, it entertains and delights its audiences with a varietyof traditional items. During 2013 special emphasis was

made to feature 'emigrant songs/tunes' to coincide withBliain na Cruinne. Branches are encouraged to support

Seisiirn shows in their own area. Perhaps a branch outingcould be organised to visit a seisifn in your area?.

Seisifinprovides young performers - in partnership with the

more seasoned players - with an outlet for their exceptional

CROSSROADS FORUMCrossroads Forum was held on 9th November. Its

main purpose was to assess and build on the successful

Development Programme. All Provinces were represented

at this Forum.

INTERNATIONAL TINKSEachyear the annual Comhaltas North American Conventionhas among it's attendance some visitors from Munster. The

2013 Convention \ras held in Washington D C which was a

greatoccasion. The 2014 North American Convention takes

place in Parsipinnl', Nerr' ]ersey, April 24-27. Apart from themeetings it is the annual rveekend celebration of Irish Music,Dance, Song and Gaeilge for lrlorth American and CanadianComhaltas members. In 2014 the Regional Fleadh will also

take place in coniunction n'ith the Convention. It is a great

opportuniry for the friends of Irish culture to meet and greet

and enjoy the man1, rvorkshops and sessions. A C6ad MileF6ilte awaits any Irish risitors to the United States duringthis weekend.

We endeavour to strengthen the ties with Comhaltas inBritain. Over the past few years, and specially in 2013,

SCRUDC CEOL TIREThe Comhaltas Traditional Music exams system is nowmore than a decade in existence and is widely availed of inour province. The SCT exams compliment the Fleadh as a

,method of measuring a person's playing abilitybut in additionit encourages the student to research the background to ourmusical heritage, the regional styles, the composers, the

musical traditions of one's own locality as well as giving due

recognition to slow airs and other types of tunes rarely heardat sessions.

T.T.C.T.The annual Teastas i dTeagasc Ceolta Tire - ComhaltasDiploma Course for Music Teachers at Cultrirlann wasdeveloped in 1981 and continues to provide a structuredDiploma Course in traditional music teaching. Munstermembers benefitted from this and received their Diplomain May last. The Course was designed and directed by thelate Michedl O hEidhin, Beannacht Dd leis T.T.C.T. is nowdirected by Martin Power who organised a highly successfulcourse in20l2 and20l3. The T.T.C.T. qualification continuesto strengthen the teaching bases, and has been a link-upwith the current music examinations - Scrudri Ceol Tire.16 candidates were accepted for the Course held in October2013 Seven of these were from Munster. Instruments coveredConcertina, Fiddle, Button Accordeon, Flute & Whistle .

MEITHEAL PROIECTS&REGIONAI CENTRES

We are most grateful for the generous Meitheal funding giventowards Fleadh na Mumhan 2013 which helped to make

the Fleadh a festival of culture and unique occasion. The

funding given towards Co. Fleadhanna was a great source

TITHE CHEOILThe Tithe Cheoil at Brf Borir, Bruach na Carraige, Brir na

Si, Cois na hAbhna, Ceolann, Ennistymon, Kilrush, and

Cnoc na Gaoithe Tulla provide an essential base for the

promotion of traditional music, song and dance in their ownareas. There are many units also, although not having theirown premises, that play a vital role in keeping communitycentres in operation in their own localities by the wide range

of Branch activities they carry on.

CHILD PROTECTIONThe Comhaltas Child Protection Policy has been circulatedto all units. Units are requested to nominate a Designated

Liaison Person to oversee the implementation of the

guidelines and be familiar with its contents. Branches are

requested to supply a list of all branch teachers and officers

and any others who are in contact with children in theirbranch activities to the Cultirrlann. Ard Rrinai Tom6s 6Maoldomhnaigh has conducted Child Protection Seminars

in all counties. The seminars are very informative and helpcreate awareness on this important role. Courses are available

through local Health Boards

Comhaltas 2014 Millennium Celebration - nOndnfHf 2014, is the Comhaltas contribution to the

2014 millennium commemoration of Brian Borri. This show involves a folk orchestra of 40 performers.

This rousing Munster sonS was composed by poet Piaras Mac Gearaiit who was born around 1705 in the parish of Baile\lhac 6da near Youghal. He was highly respected among the poets of Munster and among the regular visitom to his:rLrme rvere the poets, Eoghan Mac Cd.rthaigh, Tadhg Gaelach 6 Sfilleabhdin and Donnchadh Rua Mac Conmara. PiarasJied in 1792 at his daughter's residence in Clashmore but was brought back for burial to his native Baite Mhac 6da.
