Zoning of St.Petersburg territory
Mechanical and filtration properties of the rocks were analyzed. The major geological units which define geological structure of the territory were distinguished.
Special database of the drill holes penetrating the marking geological units was designed.
A set of digital maps of suitability of the SPb territory for above-ground construction was designed.

Schematization of the geological section of the territory was based on the following principles:
• Stratigraphic position of the units
• Engineering properties of the unites which defines their suitability for above-ground construction.
• Hydro geological properties of the unites and significance of the hosted aquifers for exploitation.

The major geological units which define suitability of the territory for constructing.
Holocene unit – the upper part of the section. The unit consists of loose rocks with high organic component. The unit hosts ground water defining hidrogeological properties of the hole section. Above moraine Ostashkov unit overlays Holocene unite. The bottom of the unit is the roof of Ostashkov glacial deposits. The bed contains bandy clays and dusty sands. The units hosts non-head ground water. It also contains lenses of ground water with local head. Ostashkov moraine unit is comprised by glacial deposits of the last glaciations. Specific feature of the unit is presence of course-grained terrigenic material and boulders. The bed protects head ground water against surface pollution. Penetrating of the unit can course head water breaking. The unit sometimes host ground water lenses with local head.

Moskow-Ostashkov inter moraine unit – is comprised by sediments formed in inter glaciations period. The bed has laterally and vertically variable composition. The unit contains upper inter moraine aquifer.
Locally the unite contains organic which may course nature gas generation.
Moskow morain unit is comprised by sediments of Moskow glaciations. It has the same composition and properties as Ostashkov moraine unit.

Vologda-Moskow inter moraine unit has the same composition and properties as Moskow-Ostashkov inter moraine unit being formed in inter glaciations period. It is locally developed. It can be observed mainly in the pre Quaternary surface depressions. The unit contains lower inter moraine aquifer.
Vologda moraine unit is formed by Vologda glaciations sediments. It has the same characteristics as the above described moraine units. It is locally developed being observed onl;y in the deepest pre Quaternasy valleys.
Vologda under moraine unit can be locally traced in the thalwegs of pre Quaternary valleys. The unit contains head water. The bottom of the unite is the pre Quaternary deposits surface.
