Short Communication Comparison of a simple approximation for multinormal integration with an importance sampling-based simulation method M.D. Pandey a, * , A. Sarkar b a Department of Civil Engineering, University of Waterloo, Waterloo, Ont., Canada N2L 3G1 b Department of Civil Engineering, The Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD, USA Accepted 26 November 2001 Abstract An m-dimensional multinormal integral can be approximated as a product of m univariate normal integrals that are easy to compute. The paper compares the accuracy of this simple approximation against the benchmark results obtained from an ef®cient simulation method that utilizes the importance of sampling principle. Examples considered in the paper illustrate that the accuracy of proposed approximation is comparable to that of the simulation method. q 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved. Keywords: Multinormal integration; Probability; System reliability; Simulation 1. Introduction The joint density of an m-dimensional vector of jointly normal random variables rvs), X, with the mean vector m and covariance matrix R is given as wx 1 ; x 2 ; ¼; x m 1 2p n=2 det R p exp 2 1 2 x 2 m T R 21 x 2 m 1 It can be shown that the evaluation of the multinormal distri- bution function F m c; R P \ m k1 X k # c k " # Zc m 2 1 ¼ Zc m 2 1 wx 1 ; ¼; x m dx 1 ¼dx m 2 is central to the problem of system reliability computation. In the ®rst-order system reliability theory, non-linear fail- ure functions or limit states) of non-normal variables are approximated by linear functions in the standard normal space. For example, m different failure modes, M i , of a system with n random design variables can be expressed in the following standardized form: M i a T i u 1 b i ; i 1; 2; ¼; m 3 where un) is a vector of uncorrelated standard normal vari- ables, and a i n) is a vector of normalized in¯uence coef®- cients for the ith mode with a i T a i 1. The correlation coef®cient between any two failure modes, M i and M j , is given as r ij a T i a j : Note that M i # 0 signi®es the failure and b i 2c i denotes the reliability index such that the fail- ure probability in the ith mode is F 2b i ). The intersection of probabilities of failure in m modes is given by P fp P > m k1 {X k #2b k } F m 2b; R F m c; R 4 where x i a T i u are correlated standard normal variables, and P fp represents the probability of failure of a parallel system. The probability of failure of a series system is the union of probabilities of failure for m modes P fs P < m k1 {X k #2b k } 1 2 P > m k1 { 2 X k # b k } 1 2 F m b; R 1 2 F m 2c; R 5 Clearly, the computation of multinormal integrals is a necessary step for estimating the probability of failure of a general structural system. Numerical integration of F m c, R) with m . 7 is known to be impractical owing to large computer run time and accumulation of numerical errors. The Monte Carlo simula- tion is an alternative method in which a multinormal integral is estimated as the expected value of a discrete indicator Probabilistic Engineering Mechanics 17 2002) 215±218 0266-8920/02/$ - see front matter q 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd.
