Settings for the entireA/13 (Global mode)

    How Global mode isstructured

In Global mode you can make overall settings that applyto the entire M3, such as master tuning, key transpose, effect global switch, global MIDI channel, and systemclock.

In addition, you can crate user drum kits, and scales,

make settings for the damper pedal and assignable footswitches/pedals, and specify category ames forprograms, combinations and KARMA GE.

preserved after the power is turned off unless you firstsave your settings. Two types of data are handled inGlobal mode: user drum kit settings (Global P5), and allother global settings (Global PO-4). Each of these canbe written into their respective memory rea. This datacan also be saved to various types of media in Media

mode. For details, please see "Writing Global settings, user Drum Kits" on page 141, "Saving to media(Media-Save)" on page 142.

The Compare function that lets you return to thestate prior to your editing is not available in Globalmode.

    Global settings

Basic setupIn the Global PO: Basic Setup- Basic page you can makethe following settings.

    Tuning to another nstrument/

TransposingMaster Tune adjusts the overall pitch. Edit this settingwhen you are playing the M3 with other instruments, orwhen playing along with music on CD or tape. You canadjust the pitch in a range of +50 cents (one semitone =100 cents). If this is at 0, middle A is tuned to 440 Hz.

Key Transpose shifts the pitch in semitone steps. Edit thissetting when you want to transpose the sound of the

entire M3. You can adjust the transposition in a range of1 octave.

Adjusting the way in which velocityor aftertouch will affect the volumeor tone

You can adjust the way in which changes in velocity or

aftertouch will affect the volume or tone. This lets you (forexample) make the volume of the notes more consistent, even when they are played with varying dynamics.

Each curve has its own character, so you can select thecurve that is appropriate for your own playing dynamics, playing style, and the effect that you wish to obtain (see"Velocity Curve" on page 356 of the Parameter Guide).

Velocity Curve selects the velocity curve, and After TouchCurve selects the aftertouch curve.

Bypassing the effectsIf the Effect Global SW "1FX 1-5 Off," "MFX1&2 Off,"and "TFX Off" tems are checked, the insert effects, master effect, will respectively be bypassed.

Insert effects, master effects, and total effect can bebypassed globally. This applies to the entire M3regardless of the mode. For example, if you'veconnected the M3's outputs to an external mixer andare using an external effect processor to apply reverbor chorus to the sound, you can tum off the M3'smaster effects and total effect.

    Linking KARMA to Programs andCombinations

You can specify whether the KARMA settings writtento a Program or Combination will also be selectedwhen you select that program or combination, orwhether the KARMA settings will not change whenyou switch the Program or Combination.

When the M3 is shipped from the factory, the formersetting is selected. You can use the latter setting ifyou want to use the same KARMA settings togenrate phrases and patterns while you select andtry out different Programs and Combinations.

If the Load KARMA Settings When ChangingProgram or Combination boxes are selected, selecting a Program or Combination respectively willalso select the KARMA settings that are written inthat Program or Combination.

If you check All KARMA/DT Off, all KARMAfunctionality and the Drum Track function will be off.Even if the KARMA ON/OFF switch is on, the KARMAfunction will not oprate.

    Creating user scales

Creating an original scale, andassigning it to a ProgramOn the User Scale page, you can crate your ownoriginal scales. These indude sixteen different UserOctave Scales, in which the pitch of each note of theoctave is repeated for all octaves, and one User All Note

Scale, in which the pitch of each of the 128 notes can bespecified independently.

By adjusting the pitch of each key in the range of 99cents, you can raise or lower it by approximately onesemitone relative to the normal pitch.

The user scales you crate here can be used byspecifying the scale for a program, for each timbre of acombination, or for each track of a song.

You can choose these scales from the following pages.

    Using Drum Kits

    Drum Kit Overview

What's a Drum Kit?A drum kit is a collection of drumsamples assigned to

each kev. Drum kits have the following features.

    * A different sound will play for each note.* A drumsample (one drum instrument) is assigned to

each key. Drum samples are stored in the Rom bank,Ram bank, or in an EX * bank.

    * Samples you recorded on the M3 or loaded in Mediamode can be selected from the RAM bank.

    * On each note, you can use up to four Drumsamples, with velocity crossfades

    * Each note has seprate settings for the mostimportant sound parameters, including volume, filtercutoff and resonance, envelope attack and decay, pitch, drive and low boost, and gain for each band ofthe Program EQ.For instance, you could combine high drive and lowcutoff frequency to crate a to-fi effect on only a fewsounds, while the rest of the sounds remained clear

and pristine.* Each note can be routed to different Insert Effects, orhave seprate FX Send amounts. For instance, youcan send a snare sound through a dedicatedcompressor.

You can use Drum Kits only in Programs whose OscillatorMode is set to Drums.

Note:The EX * banks can be used if you've loadedoptional EXB-USB-PCM series drumsamples.

Drum Kit memory structureThe M3 has 153 Drum Kits, divided irtto Internal, User, and GM (General MIDI) groups as shown below. You canedit or write into any of the locations except for the GMbank, which cannot be erased.

    Drum Kit banks

    Drum Kit Programs and OscillatorMode

The Program's Oscillator Mode setting, on the Prog Pl:Basic/DT/Ctrls- Program Basic page, sets whether theProgram is used to play Drum Kits or to play normalMultisamples (such as pianos, strings, etc.).

You'll see the results of this setting on the Prog P2:OSC/Pitch- OSC1 Basic page. If the Oscillator Mode is setto Single or Double, you can select up to fourMultisamples for each Oscillator, with velocity switchesor crossfades.

If the Oscillator Mode is set to Drums, you'll be able toselect a single Drum Kit. There are still four levis ofvelocity switches and layers - but these are within theDrum Kit itself, and not stored or edited in the Program.

    Editing Drum Kits

    Before you start

    editing... Drum Program

    selecting

Drum Kits are edited in Global mode. While you're inGlobal mode, you'll play the kit that you're editing asif you were playing it from within the Program,Combination, or Song which was selected before youentered Global mode.

So, before you enter Global mode, it's best to select aProgram which is already set up for drums, with theappropriate EG settings, effects, and so on. Just usethe Program Category select popup, and choose adrum Program. You'll probably want to start fromProgram mode, press the Category popup button toaccess the Category/Program Select men, andchoose a drum kit program from the Drums category.

OSC1 /Basic Octave settingIn ord< or the note mappings to match thekeyboard, the Oscillator's Octave setting needs to be+0 [8']. All Drum Kit Programs should have thissetting already. If you're unsure, you can check thisyourself:

    1. Ac :-:;s the Prog P2: OSC/Pitch-OSC1 Basicpage.

    2. Check that the Oct (Octave) parameter(near the top of the page) is set to +0 [8'].

With a setting other than +0 [8'], the relationshipbetween the keys and the Drum Kit sound map willbeincorr: ct.

Make sure that Memory Protect isdisabledBefore you start editing, go to the Global PO: BasicSetu: - System Preference page, and look in theMeir . ry Protect section. Make sure that Drum Kit isnot checked-if so, you won't be able to make anyedits.

Drum Kits may be used by more thanoneProgramWhen YOUedit a Drum Kit, all Programs that use thatDrum Kit will be affected. To avoid changing thefactory voicing, you may wish to copy Drum Kits toempty locations in the USER banks before editing.

Backing up a Drum KitGlobal mode does not have a Compare function thatreturns the edited result to the state prior to editing. Before you begin editing a user Drum Kit, it's a goodidea to use Copy Drum Kit to copy that Drum Kit to avacant number.

    Creating a Drum Kit

Specifying the key to which you willassign a drumsample1.Select the Program that you wish to use while

    editing the Drum Kit.

For details, please see "Drum Program selecting,"aboye.

2.Press the MODE GLOBAL switch to enter Globalmode.

3.Access the Global P5: Drum Kit- Sample Setuppage.

4.Use the Drum Kit parameter, at the top of thepage, to select the Drum Kit that you wish to edit.

GM drum kits 144 (GM)-152 (GM) cannot beselected here. (It is not possible to edit or write aGM drum kit.) If you wish to modify the settingsof one of the drum kits 144 (GM)-152 (GM), youcan use "Copy Drum Kit" to copy it to 000 (INT)-143 (U-G), and then edit the copy.

5.Use the Key parameter to select the note that youwish to edit.

To select a key, you can use any of the standardVALUE controllers (the slider, dial, numeric keypadetc.). As a shorteut, you can also hold down theENTER switch and play a note on the keyboard.

This Key selection applies to all five Drum Kit editingpages.

6.Use the Assign check box to specify whether thekey will have its own settings, or use the samesettings as the next higher note.

If Assign is checked, the key will have its own

settings. This is the default. If Assign is not checked, the key won't have its ownsettings. Instead, it will use the same settings as thenext higher note-except that the drumsamples will beplayed at a lower pitch. The amount of pitch changedepends on the Pitch Slope parameter, on the ProgP2: OSC/Pitch- OSC1 Pitch page.

Use this setting when you want only to change the

pitch, such as with tom or cymbal sounds.

Creating a velocity crossfadeFor this key, let's crate a simple velocity crossfadebetween two stereo drumsamples.

    1. On the left side of the page, make sure that DS1and DS2 are turned On.

  • 7/27/2019 comverti 1

    16/18

    Using Drum Kits Editing DrumKits

    2. Similarly, make surethat DS3 and DS4 are turnedOff.

When they are turned off, mostof their parameters will begrayed out.

    3. Select RomS as the Bank for DS1 andDS2.

There are three maintypes of Drumsample

Banks: Rom, Ram, and EX *. For each type, you can also choose betweenlooking at mono and stereo

Drumsamples. For example in the case ofRom, RomM selects mono drumsamples, and

    RomS selectsstereo

drumsamples. Stereo drumsamplesrequire twice as many voices as monodrumsamples. Note that stereo Drumsampleswill require twice as many voices as monoDrumsamples.

Rom Drumsamples are the built-in "factory"sounds, and are always available. These areorganized by category, stich as bass drums, snares, hats, etc.

Ram Drumsamples include AKAI, AIFF, WAV orSoundFont 2.0 files loaded from media, andsamples created in Sampling mode.

EX * Drumsample banks are EX-USB-PCMexpansin sets created especially for the M3.Each has its own unique number; forinstance, the EX, and the EX-USB-PCM01 is

EX1. Only the currently loaded EX * banks willappear on this men.

    4. Press the Drumsample popup forDS1.

This brings up a list of Drumsamples, organized by category. Use the tabs at the leftof the display to browse through the differentcategories.

For a list of the Drumsample ames, pleasesee the Voice ame List.

    5. Select a Drumsample by touching itsame in the list.

    5. Press the OK button to confirm yourselection.

    6. Do the same for DS2.Now that you've assigned Drumsamples to

DS1 and DS2, let's set up the velocity rangesand crossfades.

    8. Access the P5: Drum Kit- VelocitySplit page.

The following settings can also be made fromthe Sample Setup page, but the graphic in theright side of this page provides a visualindication of the settings.

    9. Set DS2's Bottom Velocity to 001, andits Xfade Range to Off.

    lO.Set DSl's Bottom Velocity to 80.

Now, DS2 will sound when you play softly, atvelocities of 79 or less-and DS1 will soundwhen you play harder, with velocities of 80 ormore.

Just press the On/Off buttons to toggle them, ifnecessary.

For example, let's say that you've assigned an openhi-hat and a closed hi-hat to the same exclusivegroup:

    * Play the open hi-hat sound.

    * While it's still ringing, play the closed hi-hat.

    * The open hi-hat sound will be cut off-simulatingthe action of a physical hi-hat.

Using HoldThe Program Hold parameter can be especiallyuseful for drum programs, since it lets the samplesring out natural!y regardless of how long you holddown the note. The way that this works depends onsettings in both the Program and the Drum Kit, asdescribed below.

    To enable Hold:

    1. Access the Prog Pl: Basic/DT/Ctrls- KeyZone/ Scale page.

    2. Under Key Zone, make sure that the Holdcheck-box is checked.

Once you've turned on Hold for the Program, the

function is controlled on a note-by-note basisaccording to settings within the Drum Kit.

    3. Access the Global P5: Drum Kit-Voice/Mixer

    page.

    4. For each key, set the Enable Note OffReceive parameter as desired.

If this parameter is unchecked, the key will be held.

If it is i hecked, the key will not be held.

If you n off Hold in the Program, no keys will beheld - ,ardless of their Enable Note OffReceivesetting. For example, you might send all snare sounds toIFX1, all kick sounds to IFX2, and the remainingsounds to L/ R.

Tip: In most preloaded drumkits, the druminstruments have the same Bus (IFX/Output) Selectsettings according to their type, as follows.

    SnaresIFX1 Kkks-> IFX2Other ->IFX3

    5. Use Sendl (to MFX1) and Send2 (to MFX2) to setthe send levis to the master effects.

Controlling pan for each keyTo use seprate pan settings for each key:

1.Access the Prog P4: Amp/EQ- Ampl/Driverl page.2.Under Pan, make sure that the Use DKit Setting

    check-box is checked.

When Use DKit Setting is on, the Program will usethe pan settings for each key of the Drum Kit.

    3.Access the Global P5: Drum Kit- Voice/Mixerpage.

4.Use "Pan" to specify the panning for each key.

    Saving Drum Kits

Once you've spent all this time editing, you'll wantto save your work.

AiThe contents of your editing in Global mode arepreserved as long as the power is on, but will belost when you turn off the power. If you want tokeep your edits, you must execute Write DrumKits (or "Update Drum Kits"). This will save alldrum kits.
