In this 21st century many students are so bogged down with other things offer than school. Unfortunately the students carry a lot of aggression and anger with them to the classroom only hoping to find away to relieve it in a positive or negative way. As teachers, parents instructors and mentors we

must have clever and effective ways to resolve conflict either it be big or small in and out the classroom. We must be able to do three things, let the student recognize their actions, defuse by redirecting the negative aggression and use it as youth leadership teaching moment.

I know!, I Know! Sounds easy but, I don’t know where to start, in my 20 years of working with at-risk I have found five conflict resolution strategies that every teacher, parent and instructor should add to their arsenal of teacher Jedi mind Tricks!

• When angry, separate yourself from the situation before reacting. I call it the James Bond reaction, many student get a high off of the negative energy they get from their teacher, by reacting in a cool and not angry way it leaves the student with only a reaction that is a response to your reaction.•Attack the problem, not the student. Start with a compliment. This will throw the student or students off balance cooling them down long enough for you to effectively communicate with them.

• Communicate your feelings to the student and situation assertively, NOT

aggressively. Express them without blaming. • Focus on the issue, NOT your position about the issue. So many students unfortunately in their minds always believe it is their fault no matter what happens, by focusing on the issue, you can better make it clear what you expect from them.• Listen to the student without interrupting; ask for feedback if needed to assure a clear understanding of the issue. I often instruct many teachers to have the student write out what happen. Doing this allows the student to reflect on what happened and also gives you a chance to use it as a teaching moment.
