COURSE DESCRIPTION AND OBJECTIVES
Description:
Curriculum analysis is basically dealing with an attempt to analyze language curriculum(EFL curriculum) into its components or elements, to examine those parts and the way they fit together to make a whole, to identify the beliefs, underlying theories or principles to which the language curriculum developers were committed and which either explicitly and implicitly shaped the EFL curriculum. (Posner, 1992). In order that students are able to analyze EFL curricula which are developed either in Indonesia or other countries, this course is designed to make students familiar with : (1) Basic concepts in curriculum and the elements of curriculum; (2) Models of Curriculum Development; (3) The Bases of Language and Syllabus Development; (4) Approaches to EFL Curriculum Development; (5) Stages of EFL Curriculum Development; and (6) Frameworks for EFL Curriculum Analysis.
Objectives:
In the end of the course, students are able to :
(1) understand and identity the basic concepts of EFL curriculum;
(2) Identify elements of EFL curriculum;
(3) identify and compare systematic model to cyclical model of language curriculum development ;
(4) identify and explain the bases of EFL curriculum; (5) identify and distinguish between audiolingual and communicative approaches to EFL curriculum
development;
(6) understand and identify stages of EFL curriculum; and
(7) determine one of the approaches and the elements of EFL curriculum.
ACTIVITIES:
Inquiry based learning activities through searching, identifying, analyzing, and, presenting the chosen topic and project will be the major delivery. In the first five sessions, learning activities will be directed to search, identify, and discuss the topics covered in the syllabus. The rest of the sessions will be on presentation and discussion the approach and elements of EFL curriculum.
EVALUATION SYSTEM:
1.Class participation
Students are expected to be involved in classroom activities at least 80% of the whole sessions. They are not allowed to take any exams if their classroom involvement is under 80% of the whole sessions.
2.Chapter Report writing and presentation
3.Presentation of EFL curriculum analysis
4.Exams, either mid semester and final examination
