Saint of the Week
Saint Anselm
The Church celebrates the Memorial of St. Anselm on April
21st, though it falls during the Octave of Easter this year, so
it is not celebrated. Anselm was born at Aosta in Piedmont
(northwest Italy) in 1033. He entered the Benedictine Order
at the Monastery of Bee in France. He quickly progressed in
the spiritual life and taught theology to his fellow students.
He went to England where he was appointed archbishop of
Canterbury. He fought vigorously for the freedom of the
Church, and for this he was twice exiled. He has achieved
fame for his writings, especially those on mystical theology.
He died April 21, 1109.
Sunday Readings & Reflections
Readings for Sunday, April 16, 2017 - Easter Sunday
Witness to Faith
Reading I Acts 10:34, 37-43 (Peter’s discourse)
Reading II Colossians 3:1-4 (mystical death and
resurrection)
Gospel John 20:1-9 (Peter and the disciple at the tomb)
Key Passage: Then the other disciple, who reached the
tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed. (John
20:8)
Adult: What is your experience of resurrection in your own
life or the life of your family?
Youth: Jesus is with us today. How can you see him in the
people around you in Church? Prayer of the Week Jesus Christ is ris’n today, Alleluia!
Our triumphant holy day, Alleluia!
Who did once upon the cross, Alleluia!
Suffer to redeem our loss. Alleluia!
Hymns of priest then let us sing, Alleluia!
Unto Christ, our heav’nly King, Alleluia!
Who endured the cross and grave, Alleluia!
Sinners to redeem and save. Alleluia!
Sing we to our God above, Alleluia!
Praise eternal as his love, Alleluia!
Praise him, all ye heav’nly host, Alleluia!
Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Alleluia!
Easter
It’s here! The great feast of Easter is upon us! Alleluia! Easter is, without a doubt, the biggest feast of the Church year. It’s
HUGE! We have taken six weeks of Lent to prepare. Now we will take eight weeks to celebrate the reality of Easter. The
church is filled with an atmosphere of joy. The new life of spring that comes from the earth is yet another sign of the Easter
mystery. Easter is a constant reminder that, like the flower that comes forth from the seed buried in the ground, our faith is a
promise of resurrection. The Easter season will continue until Pentecost Sunday, June 4.
Easter Alleluia
St. Augustine says: "We are Easter people; Alleluia is our song." Alleluia is one of those words that needs to be sung. We'll
sing it over and over again this Easter season. What exactly does it mean? Literally, the word is a short form for the
sentence: "God's people praise God!" But it's one of those words that defies translation, like "Hooray!" Even the instructions
in our liturgical books say that if the Alleluia cannot be sung, it should be omitted. So whether the liturgy is celebrated in a
cathedral or a catacomb, "Alleluia" is our song.
Easter Candle
During the Easter Season the Paschal Candle should be placed near the Ambo where the Word of God is proclaimed. It is lit
each time the people of God gather during the Easter Season. The Easter Candle has always had a connection with the Easter
Vigil. It is during the Vigil that the candle was solemnly lit from the Easter fire. In former times the Paschal Candle was
extinguished with great solemnity after the Gospel on the feast of Ascension Thursday. That ritual was a way of dramatizing
the fact that the lighted candle represented the presence of the Risen Lord now ascended to the Father. Today, there is no
such ceremony. In fact the Paschal Candle is used throughout the year. It has a special significance at Baptisms and Funerals
because the focus of both these events is on the new life that we share in the Risen Christ. The Paschal Candle should be
a reminder of the promise of Jesus: "Where two or three are gathered in my name, there I am in the midst of them." Copyright © 2009 Resource Publications, Inc. All rights reserved.
