CP+ is one of Asia’s most influential camera and photo imaging shows. This year

marked the third year since the venue moved to the international city of Yokohama,

and more than fifty years since the first “Japan Camera Show”—the forerunner to

CP+.

Coming not long after the earthquake, a scaling down of this year’s event seemed

inevitable, but CP+ 2012 turned out to be a far greater success than last year with

a total visitor count of 65,120 over the four days (131.9% of 2011’s figures) and 55

“world-premiere” products (world’s first announcements) (122.2% of 2011’s figures).

The show attracted organizations from the photo imaging industry inside and outside

Japan to present a wide variety of photo imaging-related products and services

as well as the latest technologies including cameras, lenses, photo printers, photo

accessories and telescopes. In addition, through various exhibitions, seminars

and events based on the key phrase of “Shooting, Viewing and Linking”, CP+ also

provided the joy of photo imaging from Japan, one of the world’s premier industrial

hubs, to the world.

With the theme of “World Premiere—The power of photography to bring the world

together”, the four days of CP+ called renewed attention to the various strengths

of photography through events that focused on the history of photography and the

technologies that meet the needs of the times. These events included a special panel

discussion in which specialists talked about the lives and work of Renjo Shimooka

and Hikoma Ueno—two pioneers of commercial photography in Japan—and seminars

on “SLR video”, which has recently increased its presence as it comes to be used in

the production of TV commercials and films.

The year 2012 marks the 150th anniversary of Yokohama—the venue of the show—as

“the birthplace of commercial photography in Japan”, where in 1862 Renjo Shimooka

founded a photography studio. This year also saw the second year of “PHOTO

YOKOYAMA”, an international photography event that was founded last year in

cooperation between CP+ and the city of Yokohama, which provides its full backing.

The second edition of the event was larger than the first and included a greater

number of cultural institutions and organizations aiming at the further advancement

and promotion of photo imaging culture.

As one of the world’s leading comprehensive camera and photo imaging shows, CP+

will continue to commit itself, in close cooperation with the city of Yokohama, to the

further development of the camera and photo imaging industry that Japan prides

itself on, and to making a greater contribution to photo imaging culture.

World Premieres (world’s first announcements) Multilingual Services (Japanese, English and Chinese)

Outstanding Exhibitor Award

Definition of CP+ World Premiere product

As a new effort to publicize CP+ domestically and internationally as a venue for world’s first announcements of products, we have established the CP+ world premiere logo, which can be displayed only on world premiere products. The logo was used widely by exhibitors on the products in their booths. Information was also provided via the press room and the booth of CIPA, the organizer.

Multilingual services (Japanese, English and Chinese)Because CP+ is an international event notable for its world premiere announcements, we made an effort to provide more extensive language services. In addition to the English simultaneous interpretation service for the business seminars that was available last year, this year we added Chinese simultaneous interpretation service for the Keynote Speech and the Panel Discussion by Top Engineers and an English simultaneous interpretation service for the SLR movie seminar and the panel discussions.

We also distributed language stickers (for English and Chinese) to the exhibitors’ staff and journalists. These were affixed to the entry passes and exhibitor’s certificates in order to help provide efficient language services at the exhibition booths.

*CES (International Consumer Electronics Show) is a comprehensive trade show for consumer electronic appliances, information technology, telecommunications and electronics organized by CEA (Consumer Electronics Association). It is America’s largest—and one of the world’s largest—trade shows, attracting more than 2,000 company participants and over 100,000 visitors.

Blue...New products other than the above categories

In order to objectively evaluate the efforts of exhibitors to attract and serve visitors to CP+—a comprehensive international photo event—we established a new award. The “CP+ Outstanding Exhibitor Award” was determined through the votes of journalists who came to cover the exhibition, and took into account criteria that included booth planning, booth operation, booth clerks, and multilingual services. The top three vote-winners were awarded gold, silver and bronze awards respectively.

Visitor ProfileList of Exhibitors 4.3.

Though the number of exhibitors dipped a little to 88 organizations (99 including joint exhibitions for the previous year) due to the natural disasters, the total number of booth lots was 807 (810 for the previous year including the organizer’s zones). This means this year’s event was almost the size of CP+ 2011.

Because of the increase in recognition following the events of the previous two years and the higher attention paid to world premiere products, CP+ 2012 marked a total 65,120 registered visitors—or an increase of 131.9% over the previous year’s event. Furthermore, starting from 2012’s event, we introduced a new effort to categorize the professions of the business visitors and mark the sector on their passes to facilitate better communications.

Digital Imaging Seminar by InfoTrends February 10 (Fri) 10:00—11:55

1. 10:00—10:40 Imaging Opportunities in a Connected World

Venue: Annex Hall F201/202

JEFF HAYES (President, InfoTrends)The photo imaging market is entering a new era of change dominated by connected devices and services that make it simple and fun to capture and share life experiences. For some companies, this will present exciting opportunities for product innovation and growth. For others, there will likely be painful adjustments to product lines and business strategies. This presentation examined how the imaging industry would evolve and how technology vendors could best position themselves for long-term success.

2. 10:45—11:20 Connecting Consumers with their Photos and Videos

Venue: Annex Hall F201/202

ALAN BULLOCK(Associate Director, Internet Imaging Trends (IIT) service, InfoTrends)

Consumers are using a wide range of devices and services, including cameras, smartphones, tablets, connected consumer electronics, and social networks, to capture, store, view, and share their personal digital content. This session laid out a road map for participation in this digital imaging ecosystem, focusing on essential areas for growth in the imaging industry.

3. 11:20—11:55 Preserving Photo and Video Collections for the Future

Venue: Annex Hall F201/202

Masato Atoda (Senior Analyst, InfoTrends)Millions of photos and videos are lost or damaged by hardware failure, natural disaster, and other unforeseen circumstances. Consumers, faced with a rapidly growing collection of digital files, are often overwhelmed by the task of protecting those files, and instead choose to do nothing. This session discussed market challenges and opportunities for vendors to develop long-term solutions to help consumers preserve their treasured photos and videos.

CIPA and GfK Global Market Seminar February 10 (Fri) 13:00—16:00

While the CIPA statistics are continually updated to reflect current trends, the basis of these statistics exhibits a firm sense of continuity. However, 2011 left us with a number of pressing questions. Did the tumultuous world affairs of the year cast a dark shadow on the digital camera market, or did they create new opportunities emerge that led to further market growth? In the first part of this seminar, CIPA used the data derived from these statistics to objectively examine and reveal the answers to these questions. The second part of this session was conducted by the GfK group, who discussed the different markets around the world. In addition to presenting their research on Asia, which had risen rapidly as both a global manufacturer and consumer, they turned their attention to Europe and the Middle East, two areas enveloped by the fierce tides of change in 2011. They also discussed the latest trends in the United States and Japan, the two pilot markets, as well as Africa, a market that was expected to grow in the future.

This year again, a ribbon cutting ceremony was held in a celebratory mood in the presence of President Kimura of the event’s organizing body, CIPA, as well as Mayor Hayashi of the City of Yokohama, which hosted CP+ 2012, and distinguished guests from overseas.

The morning hours on the opening day (February 9) were secured for the press and other invited guests so that they could take their time to see the exhibitions and cover new products and technologies in their news stories.

Makoto Kimura, President of the Camera & Imaging Products Association (CIPA), described the current and future situations of the camera and photo imaging equipment industries in light of shipping results and the market trends, and discussed the role that CIPA should play.

Announcements were made regarding camera shipment projections for 2012, the activities of CIPA Photo Aid (a fund with the purpose of supporting organizations that are engaged in activities related to photography and video documentation and that fell victim to the Great Eastern Japan Earthquake), and new CIPA standards.

Elliot Erwitt, a world renowned photographer and member of Magnum Photos, came to Japan and took part in a special talk show held in cooperation with “Photo Yokohama”.

How have cameras changed and evolved in the digital age? What is expected of future cameras? The coordinator of this session, Yasunori Ichikawa of the JCII Camera Museum, spoke with top engineers from major manufacturers to discuss the above-mentioned issues from the viewpoint of technological development. After the discussion, an interview with these top engineers was held, targeting the audience of journalists (mainly foreign news media).

Dignitaries, representatives of exhibitors, and journalists from both inside and outside Japan were invited and provided with an opportunity to socialize.

Exhibition SiteThis year, the JCII Camera Museum’s specially designed exhibition, which commands high popularity every year, commemorated the 150th year of commercial photography in Yokohama with a focus on antique photos and vintage cameras of that time. In other exhibitions, works by high school student photographers were exhibited. In this year’s event—the first CP+ following the great earthquake—“High School Photography Clubs’Great East Japan Earthquake Reconstruction Support Project Photo Exhibition” attracted a long queue of people requesting the photo books that were distributed free of charge at the site. Also as a new effort, a B2B area devoted to the manufacturing sector—the “Component & Device Plaza”—was set up within the exhibition site. Another new trial was the “CP+ Outstanding Exhibitor Award”, which was determined through the votes of journalists to recognize exhibitors that provided excellent services including multilingual assistance.

Organizer-related booths

CIPA’s booth Booth of the Japan Photo and Video Accessory AssociationWe set up a panel that presented the association’s activities and a board that featured some famous Magnum Photos works and expressed the theme “World Premiere—The power of photography to bring the world together”. We also had Japanese, English and Chinese language staff continually on hand to provide information on the specific sites as well as on the exhibition as a whole.

Panels introducing the company members of the Japan Photo and Video Accessory Association were displayed. The Photo & Video Accessory Catalogue 2012 was also distributed free of charge.

High School Photography Clubs’ Great East Japan Earthquake Reconstruction Support Project Photo Exhibition

Kanagawa Prefectural High School Photography Association 2011 (Heisei 23 school year) exhibition of excellent works

This is a project promoted mainly by photography clubs of Saitama Sakae High School in Saitama Prefecture and Shibata Norin High School in Miyagi prefecture—one of the areas affected by the earthquake—to collect and deliver messages of support to the areas hit by the quake and replies from those areas. The exhibition showed the zeep union—realized through photography—between the hearts of people living in the devastated areas and those throughout the rest of the country in hoping for a rapid reconstruction.

This exhibition showed excellent examples of the scintillating talent of the young high school students of Kanagawa Prefecture, the home territory of CP+.

From the call for exhibitors until the event period, information was provided mainly via the website and through various other efforts made as necessary, including press releases, distribution of brochures and tools to exhibitors and related organizations, intensive placement of transit ads immediately before the event period, partnered ads with PHOTO YOKOHAMA, and tie-in campaigns with neighboring institutions. CP+ made maximum use of a broad range of media to improve event recognition and attract visitors.

Various PR tools were created and distributed to exhibitors and visitors. Alongside the CP+ logo, as in the previous two events, an illustration based around the motif of cameras and the world’s people was employed as the main visual element for eye appeal to improve the event’s recognition. As before, English versions of the invitation and the brochure were produced. In addition, we launched English and Chinese versions of the brochure for distribution at the venue.<Distributed tools>B1 size poster, B3 size poster, Brochure (Japanese and English versions), A4 size ad flyer, Ad flyer for photographers, Invitation for general visitors (Japanese and English versions), Premiere invitation (printed in both Japanese and English), Brochure for distribution at the venue (Japanese version as well as an English and Chinese version)

The official website was provided in Japanese and English as before, with Chinese newly published as part of our international PR efforts. As a result, access from Chinese-speaking countries and regions—especially from Taiwan—increased. In an attempt to improve the usability of the site, the page configuration was rearranged and the management of pre-registered visitors’ My Pages was also revamped. When CP+ appeared on the top page of Yahoo! News Topics, traffic to the site peaked and the number of unique users topped 40,000. In the exhibition venue, some visitors were spotted checking exhibitors’ event schedules on their smartphones. It seems there are still issues relating to how far we can expand the scope of website usage.

Because more foreign journalist came to Japan than in the previous year, the media exposure of the show increased in many countries and regions around the world. This year—particularly because we developed a Chinese information channel centered on the official website—many feature stories were run by the media in China and neighboring areas. In this way, we have succeeded in attracting the attention of a larger foreign audience to CP+ as a source of abundant information from Japan—a hub of the camera and photo imaging industry—on the latest products and technologies including world premiere models.

Results of the Visitors Questionnaire Survey9.

The results of the survey conducted after the event show a high degree of satisfaction: 85% of respondents satisfied the purposes of their visit and 92% wanted to visit next year’s CP+. On the other hand, we received valuable opinions regarding what visitors expect of future CP+ events. Some typical examples are cited below. We will continue to work closely with exhibitors to make CP+ a comprehensive information transmission event that satisfies a wider audience.

*The survey was conducted by questionnaire after CP+ 2012 and included visitors who pre-registered on the Web and people who actually visited the show (number of respondents: 7,562).*The results for Q 1 and Q2 are compiled based on the registered data of those who pre-registered (number of pre-registered users: 56,598).

■ About the photo imaging industry

About 90% of the respondents were satisfied.

About 90% of the respondents wanted to visit next year’s event.

I t seems the number of female v is i tors s t i l l cont inues to increase. By age bracket , those in the i r 30s and o lder account for more than hal f o f the v is i tors .

Although 66% of the respondents were satisfied, the issues also seem to lie in increasing the recognition of—and need for—“World Premiere”.
