County Board Chairperson - Mick McGrath

Tá fáilte róibh go léir chuig na cluichí leathcheannais iosghradú a bhéas ar siul an deireadh seachtaine seo. Is am an-deacair é seo d’imreoirí, lucht bainistiochta, oifigigh agus lucht féachana agus tá áthas ar CLG Dhún na nGall a bheith in ann na cluichí leathcheannais seo a shruthlú beo agus and clár fiorúil seo a sholáthar ina bhfuil an fhaisnéis is tábhachtaí.

You are all very welcome to this weekend’s relegation semi-finals in the junior and senior championships. Unfortunately, one of the four games scheduled had to be postponed for a week as a precautionay measure as a result of Covid-19. That game is now being played Sunday Sept 13th in O’Donnell Park.

We have battled against the change in our lifestyles, our work , our social fabric, our families, and our sporting involvement. The GAA has seen many changes since its foundation, and it has originated from the roots and soul of our Gaelic traditions, but no member could have foreseen the changes wrought by Covid-19. The year 2020 will certainly remain in our memories as the year of transformation, and we continue to implement the many prevention measures required to keep this virus at bay. I encourage you all to continue the great work that we have all had a part to play in, and I thank you for the many hours of voluntary assistance you have contributed in your Club areas in assisting the HSE and others, in bringing safe and healthy practice to vulnerable and lonely members of our communities.

On behalf of the GAA in Donegal I thank the frontline workers who have given so much to helping our society, in facing the challenge of the coronavirus. There was a period this year where we all thought that we wouldn’t get playing our games, but many difficulties were overcome to reach these championship playoffs. We have not agreed with all the instructions and regulations, but we respect the decision makers for their fight against this unprecedented virus while still getting our games played. The County Competition Control Committee (CCC) have used new regulations, competition formats, and workmanlike decision making to reach this stage of championship, and we are all delighted to see the championship finalised in these difficulty times. I congratulate all Clubs who have continued to contribute to giving us the opportunity to see Gaelic games played in changed and difficult times.

The streaming of our games is a new phase and challenge that we have been thrown into with restrictions on capacity. Donegal are streaming all the knock-out games, some free to air but most on a PPV basis. We are using professional camera and graphics crews to bring our spectators the best possible quality but this is a fickle industry and one in its infancy. There will be ineviatable hiccups but at all times we will be striving for success and to bring club games into our homes.

camaderie of sport and the special place the GAA holds at

the centre of so many communities. We have all missed the

occasions and realise how lucky we are to be involved. Long may

it continue.

Shane would like to thank his linesmen and umpires and wishes

both teams the best of luck.

Jimmy White, Referee - Termon v MilfordJimmy took up the whistle after a very successful career as player, coach and player manager with a star-studded Killybegs. The Fishermen were the top club team in Donegal in the latter part of the 1908s and for most of the 1990s. Between 198s and 1996, including household names like Manus Boyle, Barry McGowan, Barry and John Cunningham and John Bán Gallagher, they played in seven of the nine championship finals. They weon five (1986, ’91, ’92, ’95 and ’96). Jimmy White, mostly at wing-back, palyed in six of those finals. He did not make the 1996 decider but played in all the lead-up games. He was player-manager for three of those wins – 1991, 1992 and 1995 and in that period he also guide Killybegs to three successive Division 1 League titles (1991, 1992 and 1993).

Jimmy’s success and a coach and manager was just confined

to the CLG Na Cealla Beaga. He managed Donegal to an Ulster Minor League and Championship double in 1985 and was a member of PJ McGowan’s All-Ireland Under-21 Championship winning management team of 1987. Donegal defeated Kerry, after a replay, to wina second All-Ireland title.

Despite his impressive CV as coach and manager, Jimmy too up the whistle when he hung up his playing boots

at the end of 1996. “I had a number of approaches and offers from other clubs but I wanted to take up referee-ing. I was 37 and I felt I could fast track a referee-ing career”. To date Jimmy has ref’d 12 Donegal chanpionship finals – 6 Senior, 1 Intermediate, 1 Junior and 4 u-21s – and two minor finals. During his inter-county career he has also taken charge of the Ulster Senior Final in 2008 and the Connacht senior final in 2010

Dungloe, having lost last time out to Ardara, are currently sitting tight as they await the outcome of the weekend’s encounter.

They, and the losers of that clash in Letterkenny will then meet to see who makes the slip down to Intermediate Championship.

In their group section, Francie Friel’s Burn Road outfit suffered losses to Kilcar, Bundoran, St Naul’s and Naomh Conaill.

Milford fared only marginally better with Shaun Paul Barrett’s team experiencing defeat to Naomh Conaill, St Michael’s, Bundoran and, in their final outing, picking up a point at home to Four Masters.

Just like Dungloe and Ardara, this one is again difficult to call. Termon might have suffered demoralising drubbings to the likes of Kilcar and Naomh Conaill but they were competitive in their remaining losses.

Milford also sustained a heavy defeat to Naomh Conaill and also came up well short against Bundoran. But they did put up competitive fights in their other two outings as well. Barrett’s men will no doubt have the physical advantage but Termon might well have the edge when it comes to energy.

Whoever deals best with that contrast in styles should prevail.

Verdict: Milford

Two Cracking Senior Championship Relegation Semi-finals in Prospect

The fight to avoid the relegation places in the Michael Murphy Sports and Leisure Senior Championship went down to the final day of the competition with eight teams in danger of landing in the bottom four places. Wins for St Nauls and Killybegs hauled them both clear of the Relegation play-offs. Glenswilly had a narrow escape as Baile na nGalloglach drew with Na Ceithre Maistír to push the Donegal town side clear and leave the Milford side on just one league point -an extra point on the pitch to give them victory would have put them ahead of Glenswilly on points difference.

With a negative points difference of only 16 points Dungloe lost their first three games narrowly but a powerful second half performance from Killybegs in their final game condemned them to the play-offs. Neither Ardara nor Termon were treated kindly by the draw. Ard an Rátha put in credible performances against three quarterfinalists - with narrow losses to Sean MacCumhaills and St Michaels and getting closer to Naomh Conaill than any other team. However, they never got started against Realt na Mara, not helped by a star performance by Realt keeper Ashley Mulhearn. A young Termon side were unfortunate to meer both Kilcar and Naomh Conaill and stumbled against Naomh Naille in their final game - they were, however, short of a couple of their more experienced forwards in that game.

With the final placings throwing up regional rivals in both semi-final’s parish pride combined with the fight for Senior Championship final should guarantee two cracking matches.

Streaming - Sept 12 - 13The Government’s decision to play all Gaelic Games behind closed doors is dis-appointing for all club members and other supporters. In response CLG Dhún na nGall are doing their utmost to look after the interests of supporters throughout the County by streaming all 33 Michael Murphy Sports and Leisure Senior, Intermediate and Junior Football Championships and Senior and Junior Hurling Championship ties.

Most games will be streamed by CLG Dhún na nGall on a PPV basis with the remainder being streamed on a free to air basis by host clubs. Kudos to Aodh Rua and Setanta who stepped up to the mark on the opening weekend to stream the Junior Hurling semi-finals on their own Facebook pages. This weekend Bun an Phobail and Carndomhnaigh will be streaming their Junior championship games - Moville v Urris and Carndonagh v Letterkenny Gaels - at no cost to viewers. These games will be on the Moville and Carndonagh Facebook pages.

This weekend CLG Dhún na nGall intend to stream two Senior and two Intermediate Championship quarterfinals and one Relegation play-off games as follows:

Sat Sept 12th 14.00 - An Tearmainn v Baile na Gallóglach in association with Highland Radio - Martin McHugh and Brendan Kilcoyne

Sat Sept 12th 17.30 - Cill Chartha v Gaoth Dobhair in association with Highland Radio - Oisin Kelly and Martin McHugh

Sun Sept 13th 13.00 - Aodh Ruadh v Naomh Columba in association with Ocean FM - Paddy McGill, Hugh McFadden and Maurice McLoughlin

Sun Sept 13th 13.45 - Cloich Cheann Fhaola v Buncranncha in association with RnaG - Damien O’Donnell agus Seosamh Mac Ceallbhuí

Sun Sept 13th 16.30 -Naomh Ádhamhnáin v Naomh Conaill in association with Highland Radio - Martin McHugh and Brendan Kilcoyne

Four of these games - the Senior and Intermediate Championship semi-finals - are available on a PPV basis at a cost of €5 per game via the Donegal GAA website. The fifth game - the Senior Relegation semifinal between Termon and Milford can similarly be streamed from the website but the cost is €3 rather than €5.

Next weekend the hurling semi-finals - Junior and Senior - the Junior football semi-finals and the two Relegation Finals will all be streamed. None of Donegal’s championship fixtures are being broadcast by national media, ie, neither TG4 nor RTE2 will be showing any of our games this year. Thus, all finals will be streamed - the three football finals are scheduled for the weekend of September 26th and 27th and the hurling finals the following weekend.

Donegal is just one of 32 County Boards across Ireland working hard to bring GAA games to supporters. Many other counties have suffered major problems, serious enough to initiate mass refunds, and ridiculous abuse on social media directed at County Boards. This is unfair as everyone involved ls working hard to facilitate supporters. Here in Donegal we are but one game away from a similar faith. It has not happened yet but we did have significant problems with one fixture last weekend. While ten games streamed well (seven very well), the County Board apologizes for the disruption to coverage for some of the second half of the Gaoth Dobhair v Sean MacCumhaills game. All venues were checked for signal strength prior to the finalisation of fixtures. Machaire Gathlán had more than sufficient bandwidth. However, bordering a public road many spectators circumvented government restrictions by congregating there (outside the club ground’s boundaries). We can only speculate that many spectators used mobile devices for social media or calls at half-time diluting the signal to the extent our stream team at the venue – Ligid TV – through no fault of their own had limited signal strength for much of the third quarter.

The other ten games streamed relatively well although there were short intermittent problems with the vidoe in Donegal town and Glencolmcille and with the audio in Letterkenny. Feedback was positive and negative in equal measure including some adverse comment for games where the streaming was perfect. Where subscribers experienced problems with games streaming well elsewhere this most likely reflects signal at their end. Where a premises has poor wifi, or there are other demands on it simultaneously such as Netflix, PS4 etc., it will affect download. The County Board sympathise completely where supporters have poor quality signal and while considerable effort goes into getting our product right there is no magic wand in our streams that will solve signal problems.

This weekend again all involved in our Stream Teams will be doing their utmost to bring the best possible service in terms of video quality, commentary and analysis. We are, however, operating in a fickle environment involving many variables some of which can go wrong. Please be patient as in the event of any issues arising subscribers can be assured that our teams will be working hard to minimise disruption and get coverage back up and running.

Alan wrote this article before the Millford - Termon game was postponed.

This evening at the Donegal GAA Centre, those of you fortune enough to be permitted attendance in these strange times can take a seat and enjoy the two relegation semi-finals of the Michael Murphy Sports & Leisure Donegal SFC.

So, in a way it’s an opportunity to enjoy the experience in Convoy for the first time and a last but one chance for the four teams involved.

Of that quartet, Milford came the closest to saving themselves on the final round of fixtures in the opening round. In the depths of injury time at Moyle View, Ronan Docherty’s score against Four Masters looked like it was going to keep Shaun Paul Barrett’s team bobbing above the watermark. However, Glenswilly were saved a fixture this weekend when substitute Sean O’Kennedy levelled for a 1-13 to 0-16 draw for the Donegal town

side.

Milford will take on a Termon team who endured a tough series of fixtures, having been paired against both Kilcar and Naomh Conaill on the road. Francie Friel will be hoping to see some of the spirit his young side showed in the narrow 2-16 to 2-12 loss to Bundoran. Last year’s Minor A Championship win shows there are shoots coming through the surface at

the Burn Road.

Ardara had a tough campaign, losing all four of their outings. They were narrowly beaten by MacCumhaill’s on the opening weekend in Ballybofey and also shaved a few feathers off St Michael’s at the Bridge. They’ll be looking to draw on whatever positives they can from those defeats against Dungloe, who might be wondering how they’ve ended up where they did.

The team from Rosses Park were right in the mix in all four of their outings. But having picked up nothing against St Naul’s, MacCumhaill’s Four Masters and Killybegs, they’ll have to fight their way out of the corner – just like everyone else will here in Convoy.

The online site for the Club Donegal House Draw is live at www.winyourhouseindublin.com. The top prize is a four bedroom house, semi-detached, in Dublin in association with Alanna Homes. The house is newly built to the latest energy efficiency standards and is valued at €400,000. There are also four other prizes including a brand new Mazda 2, a week’s holiday, €1,000 cash and a night’s B&B in Carton House with a round of golf for 2.

All proceeds from the draw go towards paying the debt on the newly completed Phase 2 of the Donegal GAA Centre in Convoy and financing the planned Phase 3. The ongoing development of the Centre is a key plank in the future success of GAA games in Donegal - football and hurling, youth and adult, ladies and men. The Donegal Facebook page has a video of county manager Declan Bonner and captain Michael Murphy discussing the centrality of the facilities at Convoy to both the continued success of our county representatives and the nurturing of future stars.

Tickets for the draw can be bought online using devices from mobiles to desktop computers. Tickets are also from contacts within each of the forty clubs in the County. Thanks you to the Abbey Hotel, Donegal; the Allingham Arms, Bundoran; the Mount Errigal, Letterkenny; and the Villa Rose, Ballybofey - tickets had been available from these venues but due to Covid 19 regulations this is no longer the case.

During the half-time break in each of the championship knock-out games you can

either listen to a Donegal celebrity - Conal Gallen, Daniel O’Donnell or Micky Joe Hart - promoting the draw or watch an excellent bird’s eye view of the recently completed Phase 2 of the Centre compliments of drone footage shot by main contractors McDermott and Trearty.

Club Donegal have also been kind enough to sponsor the Man of the Match award in a selection of our championship fixtures. this weekend it will be the Termon v Milford relegation semifinal in O’Donnell Park. The choice will be made by Highland Radio Co-commentator Brendan Kilcoyne.

There is a dedicated mobile phone number, where queries can be answered and purchases can be made - 086-604-7089. Currently you can follow Club Donegal on Facebook at “Win Your House in Dublin”, on Twitter @WinHouseDublin and on Instagram at @winyourhouseinDublin.

Burt v Naomh Colmcille - Local Derby with a DifferenceGerard McLaughlin

Shaun Murphy’s Burt will face Joe Donaghy’s Naomh Colmcille this Saturday afternoon in the Scarvey with the winner securing their place in the Intermediate Championship for another season, while the loser will have to face either Naomh Brid or Naomh Ultan for one last crack at avoiding the Junior Championship in 2021.

Needless to say, it has been a poor season to date for both sides, with Naomh Colmcille winning one game and losing three, while Burt lost all four, on what was the more difficult side of the draw.

Naomh Colmcille made the quarter final last season, before eventually losing out to Cloughaneely, while Burt managed to beat Naomh Ultan to retain their status at intermediate level.

It’s clear that the Newtown men have missed Michael Lynch, following his attempted transfer to Gaoth Dobhair and Donaghy will look to the likes of Daniel Clarke and Ryan McErlean to drive his side on this weekend.

Burt should be able to call on the services of danger man Christy McDermott after injury and Mur-phy will be hoping that the big man can lead his side to victory over their neighbours on Saturday.

Marketing Opportunities - Programmes Sept 19th and 20th

Next week there will be two virtual programmes published. One programme will cover the four hurling semi-finals involving Setanta (A&B teams), Buncrana, St Eunans, Burt, Carndonagh, Aodh Ruadh and Dun-gloe. The second will cover the football championship - two Relegation finals and the Junior semi-finals.

Each programme will list squads, give views from the camps, have four other articles, four pages for Donegal GAA sponsors and four pages available for other advertisements. There will also be advertising and sponsor-ship opportunites associated with the streaming of our games. The advertising costs in the programmes are as follows: Full page Advert €75, Half Page €40 and Quarter Page €20. The County Board is also seeking Man of the Match (MotM) Sponsors who will get an advert in the Virtual Programme and be asked to supply a prize worth a €100 for the MotM eg a hotel or restaurant voucher, WinYourHousein Dublin Ticket, etc.

Advertising Costs - StreamingThe County Board are also encouraging sponsorship and advertising of our Streaming service. The costs for next weekends games are as follows:

Naomh Bríd slight favourites in Páirc Thír Chonaill on Sunday

Naomh Brid and Naomh Ultan are fighting for more than retention of their Intermediate Championship on Sunday when they meet in the relegation play-off in Tirconaill Park at 1 pm.

These two sides started the season on a high when both claimed the scalp of Four Masters in the Regional League.

Naomh Brid had one win in the championship league section, at home to Burt, but were competitive in the other games, tough encounters at home to Aodh Ruadh and difficult away games in Glencolmcille and Cloughaneely.

They parted with their manager, Dougie Corbett, after the first defeat in Glen.

Naomh Ultan have found the going tough after losing big full-forward Alan Lyons to injury in their opening game against Naomh Colmcille. it was the first of four defeats and they go into Sunday's game as the underdogs. They may need the second play-off game to survive in the Intermediate grade.

C-Live Sport was one of 4 stream teams used last weekend by CLG Dhn na nGall (2 games in Buncrana). They are Hugh Quirke on Camera and Sean Quirke looking after all technical aspects of the live stream, including switchers, graphics, score, etc, Hugh and Sean have a combined tenure in the video-graphy business of over 50 years. Together they aim to bring live streams, of the highest possible quality, of sporting events at a local and national level to the general population.

Home sides all win to reach the semi-finals

The top four sides in the Intermediate League stages all had home advantage last week-end and as generally predicted all won through to the next round, nor of them comfort-ably, with the possible exception of Buncrana who surged ahead to lead 2-4 to 0-1 after ten minutes. They were rocked back by a hat-trick of Fanad Gael’s goals prior to the break but crusied comfortably home in the second half, winning 4-15 to 4-5.

With home venue Cloughaneely were favourites in PCC Falcarragh and the odds im-proved with Red Hughs missing county star Stephen McMenamin. The Killygordon men fought doggedly to remain in touch but never pulled back the early three point lead established by Cloughaneely. It was 0-7 to 0-3 at half-time, 0-9 0-6 at the second wa-ter-break. It ended o-13 to 0-9 - two points from late substitute Jason McGee, returning to action, helping the hosts get over the line. John Fitzgerald was man of the match. In Ballyshannon Aodh Ruadh got the early points but a Naomh Muire goal put the visitors in front and they led 1-4 to 0-5 at the break. The home side, helped by a stiff breeze, took over in the second half, hitting six consecutive scores and ran out comfortable 0-15 to 1-7 winners. Michael McKenna was the WinYourHouseinDublin Man of the Match.

Naomh Columba dominated this game in Glen from the start but a Paul McLaughlin goal on the stroke of half-time left just three points between the teams at the break. With the home side hitting the first three scores of the second half to go six clear Naomh Colum-ba seemed to be back in charge but while Malin had the better of the last quarter they needed a second goal to close the gap. It never came as the game ended Naomh Colum-ba 0-13 Malin 1-7.
