There are two kinds of Ethernet cables that you can make Straight Through and Crossover

Straight Through

Ethernet cables are the standard cable used for almost all purposes. It is highly

recommended you duplicate the color order as shown on the left. Note how the

orange pair is not side by side as all the other pairs of colors. This configuration

allows for longer wire runs.

Crossover Cables

The purpose of a Crossover Ethernet cable is to directly connect one computer to another computer (or device) without going through a router, switch or hub.

1. Using the stripper on your crimping tool, carefully strip about 1 inch of the plastic casing off from the end of the cut cable. Unwind and separate all of the colors.

2. Grasp the wires between your fingers and straighten them out. Arrange the colors to form either the straight through or crossover cable combination. Use a pair of scissors to make a straight cut across the wires 1/2 inch from the cut sleeve to the end of the wires.

3. Hold the plug with the clip facing away from you. Carefully slide the wires firmly into the sleeve, making sure that each wire remains straight and flush to the end of the plug. Note the position of the blue plastic shielding and how the wires go all the way to the end. The wires are all the way in and there are no short wires.

Wrong - Note how the blue plastic shielding is not inside the connector where is can be locked into place. The wires are too long; they should be

1/2 inch from the end of the sleeve.

Wrong - Note how the cables do not go all the way to the end of the connector.

After you have lined up your cables, place the connector into the Ethernet Crimper and cinch down on the handles tightly. Make sure the plug has closed correctly and the wires are still in the right order.
