Definition of“natural disaster”
What is a flood?
Flood is a natural event where a piece of
land suddenly gets submerged under
water.
Flooding is extremely dangerous and has
the potential to wipe away an entire city,
coastline or area, and cause extensive
damage to life and property.
What is a drought?
The word ‘drought’ is always a difficult one to
define, because it is often used in more than
one context. In simple terms, it is the absence
of water for a long period of time,
People often do not see droughts as natural
disasters like tornadoes, hurricanes or floods,
because they do not have usual immediate
destructive ability, but they can be very
catastrophic in the long run.
What is a hurricane?
Hurricanes, also called
Typhoons, are tropical
cyclones forming over the
Atlantic Ocean or Eastern
Pacific Ocean.
It is seen as a massive storm
(powerful winds often with
rains, thunderstorms and
lightning) that usually moves,
covering a stretch of 500-600
miles.
Write the corresponding name of the
“disaster “ being described
a. The water from rivers or the sea comes
over the land
.................................................
b. There is no rain and plants die
...........................................
c. Violent weather with wind and rain

Climate ischanging
Scorching summers... Melting glaciers... Stronger storms...
The signs of global climate change are all around us.
Why is the climate
changing? What causes
climate change? What is
the connection between
climate chance and
human activity ?
Scientists have warned that the world's climate has
changed a lot, and has affected many living and non-
living things. Many places that were warmer are now
getting colder, and many colder regions are getting
much more colder or even warmer (know as Global
Warming).
Rising global temperatures lead to other changes
around the world, such as stronger hurricanes,
melting glaciers, and the loss of wildlife habitants.
Between 1901 and
2012, it is believed that
the earth's temperature
has risen by 0.89 °C.
Rainfall amounts have
also risen in the mid-
latitudes of the northern
hemisphere since the
beginning of the 20th
Century. It is also
believed that sea levels
have risen up to about
19 cm globally, with lots
of glaciers melting in
addition.
Climate change refers to general changes in climate patterns, including temperature, precipitation, winds, and other factors.
Global warming refers specifically to any change in the global average surface temperature.Do not confuse the two.

Global warming and greenhouse effect
The global warming is an increase in temperature near the surface of the Earth. The term is used to refer to recent and ongoing warming caused by the increasing of the greenhouse effect.Without the greenhouse effect, the Earth would not be warm enough for humans to live. But if the greenhouse effect becomes stronger, it could make the earth warmer than usual. Even a little extra warming of the earth may cause problems for humans, plants and animals.Global warming leads to a bigger set of changes referred to as global climate
change.

Earth gets energy from the sun in the form of sunlight. The Earth's surface absorbs some of this energy and heats up. The Earth cools down by giving off a different form of energy, called infrared radiation. But before all this radiation can escape to outer space, greenhouse gases in the atmosphere absorb some of it, which makes the atmosphere warmer. As the atmosphere gets warmer, it makes the Earth's surface warmer, too.

Gases that trap heat in the atmosphere are called greenhouse gases. The main greenhouse gases are:Carbon dioxide (CO2)Methane (CH4)Nitrous oxide (N2O)Fluorinated gases
The enhanced greenhouse effect is being cuased by human activities that are adding greenhouse gases to the Earth's atmosphere. Today greenhouse gas levels are the highest they have been in the past 3 million years and have been increasing since the dawn of the Industrial Revolution
Activity 6
Global warming: causes
Natural causes are not responsible. None of
the natural causes of climate change can fully
explain the climate changes we are seeing
today.
People's activities are the main cause. By
burning lots of fossil fuels like coal, oil, and
natural gas, people are overloading the
atmosphere with carbon dioxide and adding to
the greenhouse effect.
Along with other
greenhouse gases,
the carbon dioxide
is trapping heat and
causing the climate
to change.
Greenhouse gases are at record levels in
the atmosphere. For hundreds of
thousands of years, the concentration of
carbon dioxide in the atmosphere stayed
between 200 and 300 parts per million.
Today, it's up to nearly 400 parts per
million, and the amount is still rising.

Global warmingeffects
The Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets have decreased in mass. Experiment show Greenland lost 150 to 250 cubic kilometers of ice per year between 2002 and 2006, while Antarctica lost about 152 cubic kilometers (36 cubic miles) of ice between 2002 and 2005
Global warming causes thermal
expansion of land and water. It
also causes ice sheets to
melt. Large volumes of melted
ice then flows down into streams,
rivers, lakes and seas. The result
is rising sea and water levels,
causing floods and massive
destruction.
1
Climate change also distorts
the natural habitats and lives
of many plants and animals.
For example, the survival of
polar bears and penguins in icy
regions are in danger, as they
cannot survive anywhere else.
Other plants and animals in hot
regions will die if temperatures
suddenly become too cold for
them.
4
Changing climate may also
cause the weather to become
more extreme, be it droughts or
violent storms and heavy rain
3
Extreme changes in temperature
makes people suffer breathing
difficulties, head aches, body
rashes and other illnesses.

Carbon footprint
Your carbon footprint is the sum of all emissions of CO2 (carbon dioxide), which were produced by your activities in a given time frame.Everything humans have at home or workplace need power to work. This power comes from burning fossil fuels and other natural sources. The more fuels areburnt, the more are produced into the atmosphere. This means each time your dad drives his car, or you turn on an electric appliance, you are indirectly adding to the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
Our impact on nature is
called our ‘ecological
footprint’. To find out what your
footprint is, go to

How to use less!We need to use less. “We should live in a way that leaves enough for the future” . Unplug your television and
laptop. They use energy even when they’re turned off.
Always unplug your phone charger after your phone is charged.
Turn down the heating by one degree.
Take a short shower instead of a bath. A bath uses about 100 litresof hot water.
Keep your fridge full. Empty fridges need more energy to stay cool.
Don’t boil more water than you need.
Use things for as long as possible. It takes energy to make new products.
If your old things can still be used, give them to charity instead of throwing them away.
Eat less meat! Meat production uses lots of energy, and rainforests are destroyed to make space for cattle.
Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth. Use a normal toothbrush instead of an electric one.
Drink tap water instead of bottled water. Keep water in the fridge so you won’t
have to run the tap until the water gets cold.
Be part of the solution!
You can help! Everyone knows we can save energy by turning off lights. But there are lots of other things you can do:
