Climate Change in DR CongoImpacts
• Change of seasonal planning (such as less rain or flood)• Reduction of the productivity (such as manioc that is the principal food) • Increase of the price• Increase of poverty
Farmers need to adapt and to have more information
Climate Change in DR Congohow to adapt
• Importance of technology innovations identified by research• Dissemination of technologies trough ComDev’s tools• Translate scientific language to local languages
Communication Action Plan in DRCCSDI-Objectives
• Support to the National Agricultural and Forestry Research System
• Improving technology adaptation through ComDev
• Support to community rural radios
• Scale up pilot activities at the national level
Rural Radio for Climate Change Adaptation
Rural Radio is the most pervasive, accessible & flexible medium
• Rapid dissemination of critical information to remote audiences and early warning on issues such as weather, markets, crops and livestock production, natural resources• Local generation of contents including traditional knowledge• Improved coordination and awareness• Facilitate participatory approaches
Communication Action Plan in DRC activities implemented
• Multi-stakeholder consultations on knowledge and communication needs and priority topics (workshop in Bas Congo)• Assessment of Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices (survey in Bas Congo)• Participatory strategy design and Action Plan• Launching of the Action Plan
Communication Action Plan in DRCOn going activities
• Select the immediately applicable results of the research for manioc and agro-forestry• Translate the results from scientific language to local language• Dissemination of technologies with farmers field school in the field• Formation of local rural radios about the technologies to disseminate and create a partnership with them
Lesson learned
Farmers feel and live the impacts of climate change but …
They need to have more information about how to adapt and this can be achieved through appropriated communication
Thank you
