What’s difficult w/ neutrino experiment

Cross section is extremely small.

-> Need large mass detector and strong source

Observable is Ψ x σ , while both Ψ and σ are unknown to some extent.

Hence both signal and noise are unknown to some extent.

One note for disappearance

Neutrino flavor is tagged via charged current (CC) interaction.

Ethreshold ~ a few MeV for νe

~ a few 100 MeV for νµ

~ a few GeV for ντ

At Eν < Ethreshold,

that flavor is not observed and recognized as disappearance.

We cannot distinguish disappearance due to Eν<Ethreshold

and that due to sterile neutrino.

OPERA and ICARUS w/ CNGS beam will search for the tau appearance.
