CV Synopsis

• Tony Hammond graduated from Edinburgh Medical School in 1980 and trained in Medicine and Rheumatology in Bristol, Bath and London including the National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases, Bart’s Hospital, London and The Royal Postgraduate Medical School where he won an ARC scholarship to write an MD thesis on the immunology of SLE with Mark, now Professor Sir Mark Walport, the Chief Scientific Officer.

• He was appointed Consultant at Maidstone Hospital in 1992 where he practiced General Medicine, developed the Rheumatology department and was highly active in research collaborating in almost 30 clinical trials and writing almost 50 papers and articles, most recently on the potential of Alkaline Phosphatase as a novel immune modifier in RA.

• He left Maidstone Hospital leaving in 2011 to pursue the development of The Kent Institute (KIMS Hospital, Maidstone, Kent, UK), a new build private medical facility opened in 2013 where he was Clinical Chairman till 2016.

• Subspecialty Interest in spinal pain management was fostered by joining the International Spinal Intervention Society in 2000 and he is now an SIS European Instructor, active in teaching and development.

• His special interest is the diagnosis and management of iback pain and sciatica due to damaged intervertebral discs. He has published on antibiotics in Modic pain and is currently submitting positive results of a 100 patient case series of disc treatment and is developing a comprehensive minimally invasive and endoscopic disc pain service at KIMS Hospital. He provides routine NHS care in spinal pain management including endoscopic discectomy.

• These clinical insights offer additional advantage in the analysis of complex back pain after injury including RTA.

• He remains in full time practice, Privately at KIMS, Maidstone and London and NHS in pain management at KIMS and as a Locum in Rheumatology at Kings College, London.
