Prof Aziz-us-Samad
Born in Jabalpur CP India in 1924, he did his senior Cambridge from Christ Church
School, graduation from City College Jabalpur and masters in English literature and
philosophy from Robatson College affiliated with Nagpur University.
He taught for some time at Islamia College Karachi and then came to Peshawar and
joined Edwards College, Peshawar in 1952. He switched over to Islamia College,
Peshawar in 1954 while he joined English Department at the University of Peshawar in
1956.
Of all the teachers of great literary acumen, Prof Samad was a different species of human
being. He was a ‘perpetual fountain’ of inspiration for numerous young students. He
shaped lives of many to see beneath the surface. He was so conscious of the society’s
philistinism that he would often satirise it in his lectures.
“A day will come when our art of painting, singing and poetry will be reduced only to
calligraphy, qawali and composing of Naat (religious hymns),” he used to say.
Sumaira Samad(Daughter) said that her father was like a beautiful tree -- protecting and
nourishing. “What he taught me and I cherish most in myself are his gifts to me. As a
teacher his lectures on novel and literary criticism have left indelible impression on me,”
she added.
Senator Afrasiab Khattak said that he felt proud to have been a student of Prof Samad in
1971-73. His encyclopedic knowledge, brilliant eloquence and sharp focus would keep
the class spell bound, he added.
“I have the honour of being Samad Sahib’s student in 1970-72 and remained in regular
contact with him for the next 20 odd years when I taught at Islamia College. Samad Sahib
was a born teacher and loved being in class with his students,” former teacher of Islamia
College Prof Malak Naz recalled.

Book of the Month
The partition of India, 1947, some call it vivisection as Gandhi had, has
without doubt been the most wounding trauma of the twentieth century.
It has seared the psyche of four plus generations of this subcontinent.
Why did this partition take place at all? Who was/is responsible --
Jinnah? The Congress party? Or the British? Jaswant Singh attempts to
find an answer, his answer, for there can perhaps not be a definitive
answer, yet the author searches. Jinnah's political journey began as "an
ambassador of Hindu-Muslim Unity" (Gopal Krishna Gokhale), yet
ended with his becoming the "sole spokesman’ “of Muslims in India;
the creator of Pakistan, The Quaid-e-Azzam: How and why did this transformation take place? No
Indian or Pakistani politician/Member of Parliament has ventured an analytical, political biography
of Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah, about whom views necessarily get divided as being
either Hagiographical or additional demonology. The book attempts an objective evaluation.
Jaswant Singh's experience as a minister responsible for the conduct of India's foreign policy,
managing the country's defence (concurrently), had been uniformly challenging (Lahore Peace
process; betrayed at Kargil; Kandahar; the Agra Peace Summit; the attack on Jammu and Kashmir
Assembly and the Indian Parliament; coercive diplomacy of 2002; the peace overtures reinitiated
in April 2003).He asks where and when did this questionable thesis of 'Muslims as a separate
nation' first originate and lead the Indian sub-continent to? And where did it drag Pakistan to? Why
then a Bangladesh? Also what now of Pakistan? Where is it headed? This book is special; it stands
apart, for it is authored by a practitioner of policy, an innovator of policies in search of definitive
answers. Those burning 'whys' of the last sixty-two years, which bedevil us still. Jaswant Singh
believes that for the return of lasting peace in South Asia there is no alternative but to first
understand what made it 'abandon' us in the first place. Until we do that, a minimum, a must, we
will never be able to persuade peace to return.

In this paper, we present a compartmental mathematical model of hepatitis B virus with optimal
control strategies. First, we formulate the model applying the optimal control techniques which
use control variables in the form of isolation, educational campaign and vaccination. We derive
the conditions under which it is optimal to eradicate the disease and examine the impact of possible
vaccination treatment strategies on disease transmission. When such an elimination is impossible,
we use the techniques of Pontryagin's Maximum Principle to derive the necessary conditions for
the optimal control problem. The numerical results show that some effective vaccination and
control can reduce the disease spread in the community.

Abstract
The present paper describes the dynamics of the Pine Wilt disease with variable population size.
The basic mathematical results for the model are presented. The stability analysis of both the
disease-free and endemic cases are presented whenever R 0 R0 lesser or greater than one,
respectively. Further, an optimal control problem is formulated and the necessarily involved results
are presented. Moreover, the numerical simulation of the optimal control problem with suggested
control strategies for the possible eliminations of the infection in the pine trees population is
presented.

The Awareness and Impact of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) on Climate
Change in Malaysia

Abstract
This article aims to investigate the level of public awareness and perception regarding carbon
capture and storage (CCS) and climate change in Malaysia. The article also aims to identify those
social, economic and environmental issues which affect CCS and combating climate change in the
country. The findings revealed that more than 79 percent of the respondents were willing to have
government initiatives to implement CCS projects. However, about 21 percent were against these
initiatives due to their different perceptions and opinions regarding CCS. By using partial least
squares (PLS) model through SmartPLS 2.0, it is found that social and economic issues of CCS
have significant positive while environmental issues have no significant impact on combating
climate change. The findings offer significant implications for regulators, policy makers, and
practitioners regarding social, economic and environmental issues of CCS and climate change in
Malaysia.
