Project Details

M.E. (Mechanical)

Project Title Numerical Investigation of Wind Induced Loads on Heliostats for Solar Thermal Power Plant.

Establishment Reactor Safety Division (RSD), Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Mumbai.

Duration June 2013 – June 2014.

Project Description To study the effect of wind induced load on heliostat structures using CFD analysis.

The function of heliostat is:

i. to track the sun’s position throughout the day (i.e. it changes its position according to the

sun’s position in the sky), and

ii. to receive and reflect the sunlight to a secondary target (or receiver).

This produces a large amount of heat in the receiver which is used for power generation. The

design wind speed of Mumbai (40 kmph) was considered. The various case studies conducted

are:

1. Wind induced load on a heliostat.

2. Wind induced load on two heliostats in tandem and staggered arrangement.

Page 3: CV-Abhilash

3. Wind induced load on a heliostat array.

The details of each study are as follows:

1. Wind induced load on a heliostat

This study gave information about the various forces and moments on a single heliostat

when subjected to wind induced load.

This study was conducted in 2D and 3D.

The force coefficient values were found using IS: 875 (Part 3) which is the Indian

Standard Code of Practice for Design Loads for Buildings and Structures: Wind Loads).

Good agreement was found between the force coefficients values found with 2D, 3D and

IS: 875 (Part 3) studies.

2. Wind induced load on two heliostats in tandem and staggered arrangement.

This study gave information about the optimum spacing to be kept between the two

heliostats.

This study was conducted only in 2D to save computational time.

Wavelet analysis gave the frequency vs. time information of the wind flow over the

heliostats.

3. Wind induced load on a heliostat array.

An array of heliostats was designed using the no blockage layout algorithm and tested

for wind load. The aim was to minimize the field losses and to maximize land usage.

This study was conducted in 2D.

It was observed that the heliostats in the extreme ends were subjected to higher wind

loads which resulted in higher forces acting on them.

More studies need to be conducted in this part which was beyond the scope of present

project.

B.E. (Mechanical)

Project Title Development of low cost air conditioning system.

Establishment In-house project.

Duration July 2011 – May 2012

Project Description To create a low cost air conditioning system employing a different technique from that of

conventional compressor system.Brine solution was used as the coolant instead of

commercial gases. Solar refrigeration system was used to maintain the temperature of the

brine solution.

The components of the project setup used:

Cooling coil of 0.75 TR.

Blower drums to facilitate heat exchange.

Solar refrigerator to maintain brine solution’s temperature.

Aquarium pump to circulate brine solution to the cooling coils.

Perforated membrane to reduce the moisture content of air.

The cost of this setup is Rs. 4,200.

A temperature of around 25 C was achieved from this air conditioning system.

Mathematically, the temperature calculated for this setup was 22.5 C.
