Veterans Benefits VA Benefits Can Cover Your Certification Test Costs If you're a veteran with G.I. Bill Benefits and seeking a new job or striving to move ahead in your
present job, don’t miss the opportunity to strengthen your career opportunities and earnings with
additional licensing or certification. As an eligible veteran, you may be reimbursed for your test
costs.
VA licensing and certification benefits: The new licensing and certification benefit allows the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to pay
you, if you're eligible, for a test for a license or certification, including several offered by AWS. You
can receive reimbursement for approved licensing or certification tests you take on or after March 1,
2001. These tests must be specifically approved for the G.I. Bill.
Note: The VA covers only the cost of the test itself. You may be responsible for other fees connected with
obtaining certification.
How Do I Apply For Benefits?
The first step is to take the test for your desired certification. With test results in hand, you can then
apply for test cost reimbursement from the VA. You will need to complete and submit the Application
for Licensing and Certification Testing Fee Reimbursement to the VA office that handles your
education benefits.
Check the map on the Internet site at www.gibill.va.gov to find the location nearest you.
Never filed a claim for VA education benefits before?
You’ll also need to submit an application for benefits. Check below to find the correct form for your
needs. You can print either one directly from the VA’s website or call 1-888-GIBILL-1 (1-888-442-
4551) to request the form by mail.
• Veteran or on active duty? Use VA Form 22-1990, which you can complete and submit right
online. Visit www.gibill.va.gov and click Electronic Application.
• Eligible child or spouse of a veteran? You need VA Form 22-5490.
Send the application form along with the other information above to the VA regional office that
processes your claim. The addresses are printed right on the forms.

RECOMMENDED PRESTUDY FOR
PREPARATION FOR CERTIFIED WELDING INSPECTOR/EDUCATOR EXAM COURSE AT HOBART INSTITUTE OF WELDING TECHNOLOGY
If you are planning to take the CWI course and exam and you would like to study prior to the course, you may consider: 1. Obtain a copy of the AWS QC1 Specification for AWS Certification of Welding Inspectors.
This is available free as a download from the American Welding Society website at http://www.aws.org/library/doclib/QC1-2016.pdf. This is the standard for all AWS-CWIs. Read it completely.
2. When you have selected the code you will use for the Part C – Open Code Book part of the
exam, you should purchase that code book. This may be purchased from http://www.welding.org/product-category/books/welding-codes-specifications/ or directly from the publisher. Look how it is organized: the table of contents, the index. Learn how to find information quickly and understand what each section covers. Bring this code book with you to the class.
3. Obtain a copy of the AWS – Part B Examination Book of Specifications. This is available free as a download from the American Welding Society website at https://www.aws.org/library/doclib/cwi-partB-BOS-customary20170418.pdf. Read it from cover-to-cover including the footnotes. This book of specifications is the standard you will use for the Part B examination.
4. If you are experienced in welding but have limited experience in welding inspection, you may choose to attend the Arc Welding Inspection (AWI520) at the Hobart Institute to get basic inspection training. http://www.welding.org/students/continuing-education/technical-training/. This course is not a prerequisite requirement for the CWI course, but can be very beneficial for someone starting out in welding inspection.
5. If you cannot attend the Arc Welding Inspection, you may want to purchase the AWS Certification Manual for Welding Inspectors. http://www.welding.org/product/certification-manual-welding-inspectors/. It is for self-study. Read each section and answer the questions at the end of each section.
6. If you lack welding process experience, you may want to take the 4-day Welding for the Non-Welder course at Hobart Institute. http://www.welding.org/students/continuing-education/technical-training/ . It provides welding process information and hands-on practice with oxyacetylene welding, shielded metal arc, gas tungsten arc, gas metal arc and flux cored arc welding processes.
7. You may take the online Welding Symbols Course http://www.welding.org/product/symbols-for-welding/ on the Hobart Institute website. Also, the Visual Inspection Course is online at https://www.welding.org/product/visual-inspection-2/ which may be helpful to you.
