ORAL EXAMINATION: UNIT 3 GCSE WELSH SECOND LANGUAGE 2018

External Assessment (Pair/Group Task 25%)

Candidates will be assessed through a formal examination held on 16, 17 and 18 April, 2018. The tasks will be set externally by WJEC, and are to be completed in groups under the teacher’s guidance.

Dictionaries and other books are not permitted in the oral examination.

Preparation

The candidates’ attainment should be regularly assessed. On the basis of the teacher’s knowledge of the candidates, groups should be formed containing no more than 3 candidates.

Teachers, to the best of their ability, should ensure that the members of the group, if they do not represent exactly the same marks, at least represent the same grade. It is the responsibility of the centre to standardise candidates’ marks within the centre.

Teachers conducting the oral examinations are permitted to open the packages containing the stimulus questions during the afternoon before the examination (either 13, 16 or 17 April). The stimulus questions should be opened and read in the presence of a member of the Senior Management Team, and then returned to the appropriate envelopes and sealed until the morning of the examination. This information should not, on any account, be transferred to the candidates.

A timetable should be prepared – about 10 minutes per group.

Arrangements on the day of the examination

The teacher should:

Open the packages containing the stimulus questions for the group discussion:Papers A and B – Monday, 16 AprilPapers C and CH – Tuesday, 17 AprilPapers D and DD – Wednesday, 18 April;

Allow the first group to prepare. Candidates are not permitted to take any previously prepared notes or books/dictionaries into the preparation room. Candidates are allowed to make notes in the preparation room, and only these can be taken into the oral examination;

Call the first group in (the next group to start preparing); Ensure that everyone is comfortable and sitting in a semi circle; Begin the examination by stating the candidates’ names and examination numbers, and then

ask the candidates to introduce themselves; Ask the candidates to discuss the topic given to them by expressing their personal opinion.

They should be allowed to do so fairly independently, although it is possible to interrupt occasionally to move the discussion forward, or to ensure that the candidates give their best and meet the requirements of the marking scheme. (The pair/group task should last for about 4-10 minutes per pair/group);

Note a mark out of 35 (Foundation Tier) and 50 (Higher Tier) for each candidate. For the Foundation Tier, it is not possible to award more than a mark of 14 for content and 14 for expression for the speaking element, and 5 marks for content and 2 marks for expression for the reading element.

Page 8: CYD-BWYLLGOR ADDYSG CYMRU WELSH JOINT EDUCATION …  · Web viewThe mark scheme encompasses the whole ability range. A conversation between the two or three members of the group

Recording

Each centre is requested to record the examinations of all groups. Please remember that only a sample of examinations will be sent to the moderator.

Sending a Sample of Groups

Teachers should input the candidates’ marks into a web-page which will be pre-populated with the relevant candidate entry details. This will then automatically identify the sample candidates and will enable the sampling process and the upload of marks to be completed in a single electronic transaction. All subject teachers who will be uploading marks will therefore require (i) a secure website account, (ii) access to the “Enter Coursework Marks” facility, and (iii) access to the specific web page(s) for their subjects.

The sample should be sent as soon as possible after the examination in order to reach the moderator by Friday, 4 May at the latest. Teachers should ensure that the sample tests are on one CD and contain individual tracks. The CD should be labelled with the centre’s name and number, and also the candidates’ names and numbers.

The marks given to each candidate in the sample should be noted on the relevant mark sheets:

CAI (S)CAI (U)

The remainder of the candidates’ tests should be stored safely, in case WJEC requires further evidence. WJEC has the right to ask centres to conduct the test again if the quality of the recording is not clear enough for moderation purposes.

GCSE Welsh Second Language Applied

General Guidelines

It is important that the oral test is conducted in quiet surroundings, in a room where extraneous sounds such as shouts from the sports fields and the school bell do not disturb the candidates. Centres should ensure that the examination is not disrupted in any way.

Recording

Recording techniques should be rehearsed beforehand so that the teacher knows precisely where to place the microphone to obtain the optimum sound balance. The candidate's every word should be clearly audible.

The teacher may have assistance to operate the tape recorder if he/she wishes.

To obtain the best possible results, the tape recorder should not rest on the same surface as the microphone. It is suggested that it is placed on a small table adjacent to the operator, where it can be switched on and off with ease. If the recorder has a 'pause' button, that should be used in conjunction with the 'start' and 'record' buttons.

The microphone should be pointing towards the candidate, about two feet from his/her mouth.

The recording should include the following details:

GCSE Welsh Second Language Oral Test 2018/GCSE Welsh Second Language Applied 2018 Course (as appropriate) Foundation Tier / Higher Tier (as appropriate). Centre Name and Number.

It is important that the teacher conducting the test introduces each candidate by name in turn on the tape before starting the examination, so that each candidate’s voice can be clearly identified e.g. "Ymgeisydd 9000, John Davies; Bore da, John . . ."

To further aid identification, the candidate's name should be used when asking questions during the examination itself.

At the end of each recording (i.e. each pair/group), check that the examination has been recorded.

The following information should be labelled on the cover of the CD:

(i) Centre Name and Number(ii) Title of Examination(iii) The names and candidate numbers of the members of the groups recorded.

WJEC reserves the right to request another recording if the first recording is not satisfactory for moderating purposes.

ASSESSMENT

Foundation Tier

Speaking, asking questions and expressing an opinion on one of three topics.

Higher Tier

Conversing and expressing an opinion on one of three topics.

The mark scheme encompasses the whole ability range. A conversation between the two or three members of the group is expected, but the teacher should join in to make sure that the candidates are shown at their best, and therefore to justify the marks given to the candidates by the centre.

When undertaking their assessments, teachers should make full use of the range of marks to note the differences between the standard of candidates.Oral work is assessed on both tiers, Higher and Foundation, and a mark higher than a C (35 marks) should not be awarded to any candidate in the Foundation Tier.
