opportunities.

The FMP project focuses building capacity of parents of pre-teen to be able to communicate with
their children on sexuality issues. CYODO’s work force is on mobilization through workshop
conducted by CYODO staff workers.
The Objective of the project is to reduce risky sexual behavior among adolescents, consequently
reducing HIV infection rates and early pregnancy among school children (9 - 12 years old)
1. MOBILZATION
On 18TH July 2011
CYODO Staff carried out mobilization activity in various areas found in Nanguruwe and Mayanga
wards using Traditional theatre groups of Soweto and Ocean.
Mobilization activity took the following steps;
a) CYODO Staff reported to the Ward offices before the commencement of the activity.
b) Theatre groups delivered various entertainments that includes FMP message together with
project’s objective to the appropriate place for the sake of impressing people to come to
know what’s going on in their area.
Then FMP Manager explained the way how the project will be run;
a) Project objectives
i. Project Manager explained how the participants will be obtained and who are the
parents required or qualified to join FMP training by specifying parents and or
guardians having children aged between 9-12 years old regardless their literacy or
illiteracy.
ii. How to participate Five weeks of training; Training has been technically arranged in
such a way that parents and or guardians can participate without affecting their
daily time table of their developmental activities.
iii. Project manager told parents and or guardians that the Training will be provided by
facilitators of both genders in order to provide equal opportunity to both
participants to be free to ask and discuss various topics to be taught.
b) Project manager also talked about various effects to the children during their
adolescence stage and mentioned some as,
-Early pregnancy
-Involvement in drug abuse
16
-Early sexual involvement that leads them being affected by STDs, HIV and AIDS.
Above mentioned effects are some of the many factors that make children fail meet
their goals by quitting from schools and sometimes deaths particularly to female
children due to early labor problems.
Manager proceeded by insisting parents and or guardians being in touched to liberate
their children by joining FMP Training as themselves are the ones with great
opportunity to talk and teach their children at home. Parents and or guardians
understood the lesson and promised to come for registration.
On 19TH July 2011
In collaboration with Village and Ward leaders CYODO Staff went on mobilizing people by;
a) Distributing FMP message brochures in Primary schools, market areas and to the people
gathering areas.
b) Going through people’s households and deliver FMP message to the people needed more
clarification.
On 20TH July2011
In collaboration with Village leaders, CYODO Staff executed pre-screening activity for the sake of
obtaining appropriate parents and or guardians having children aged between 9-12 years old before
registration day.
On 21STJuly 2011
Registration started at 9:00 am in all four stations, Nanguruwe, Namahyakata, Nkunwa, and Nanyati.
This activity took two days due to occurrence of people’s emergency.
To conclude, Registration was successful since many parents and or guardians responded positively
and adequate number of participants was obtained to start FMP Training for wave seven and others
were told to wait until the eighth wave of the training.
2. TRAINING SESSION
FMP training was implemented in two different wards of Nanguruwe and Mayanga of Mtwara
Rural.
Mayanga ward
The training was implemented in two centers of Mkunwa and Nanyati. In all two stations the sums of
288 parents or guardians was registered (144 in each) and were all successfully completed five
17
weeks of training. Among 144 in Mkunwa 103 were women and 41 were men and in Nanyati 111
were women and 33 were men.
The above statistics show unbalanced ratio between women and men participated. This problem is a
result of Male-Supremacy in the society in which child care is seen to be mother’s obligation.
Another problem is divorce that make many mothers live without fathers and sometimes mother
having children without proper father.
Participants during FMP training session
Nanguruwe Ward
In Nanguruwe ward there were also two stations of Nanguruwe primary school and Namahyakata
primary school. The sum of 288 parents or guardians was registered (144 in each). Among 144
people in Nanguruwe primary school but unfortunately only 143 were successfully completed the
