Futurist Influence on Dada
The Futurist artists before them had made a big impression on
the Dada artists. The futurists were all about speed, production, innovation-all components of the industrial revolution that was happening at
the time.
With that said they conveyed this step forward in innovation by drawing/painting strong diagonals and quick strokes.
The Dada artists to had used many diagonals in their
work.

Dada work was and is still
controversial. It would seem as
though they were the reject artists of
their time and in many ways they
were rejected. Their work often
would not make it into shows towards
the beginning of the movement.
The Dada artists however
rejected the norms of the time period; which still
weighed heavily in classic art or
art that depicted landscapes and
portraits. Th

Dada brought about some of the first forms of collage (overlapping images) and photomontage (fitting images together). This allowed for a very scattered combination of artistic style. Often the typography would have a purposefully messy chaotic appearance.

One of them is a German artist by the name of Hans
Arp. Arp is well known for his squares. He would cut
out squares with some size and shape variation then
put them in a bag, shook them up and then released
them onto the page.
Whichever way they ended up on the page was the composition he would roll with. He arranged the squares according to chance. This also corresponds with the dada
spontaneous style.
Of course Marcel
Duchamp and the

immediately come to
mind when thinking of
Dada art. There were
many other participants

A vast majority of the public had an adverse
reaction to Dada art. First glimpse
it had a seemingly random, tasteless,
chaotic style. However once the
thought process behind Dada art
is understood it becomes reasonable. Like
many different contemporary art
movements Dada had philosophical
roots. Dada was a reaction against
anything rational. It was thought that
rationality was what brought on
the war.
