SCENE1: KITE VENDOR

EXT. EVENING. CYCLE STAND NEAR GARDEN

CU of a flag that is not furling on a pole.

CUT TO

As camera tracks, from horse to toys shop (where thevendor lends bubble gun to kid5) to chat wala to cycleshop [that has kites and balloons] we hear murmurs ofkids talking. A vendor who sells kites, balloons andrelated paraphernalia is in final frame.[There are 5balloons. 4 big ones though of pale colours but one smallbright red balloon]. 4 small kids are herd together.Small kid is wearing red T-shirt. kid5 (the one thatbought bubble gunwalks into the frame) and comes thetitle(Dada ji ki Patang). Kids are looking at kites.[Sound reference: Bright emotion, introductory music till

titles kicks in.]KID1

Woh waali kitne ki hai!

VENDOR2 rupaye ki...

KID1 Aur woh waali

VENDORchaar ki...

KID1do mein nahin milegi?

KID2Laal waali lete hain..

KID1Woh wali dikhao na bhaiya..

Suddenly kids look at a hidden kite and are astonished.Close up of small kid.

KID1(Astonished)

yeh waali kitne ki hai? [Sound:Mood change]

VENDORBees rupaye ki

ALL KIDS(Surprised)

Bees rupaye ki??!!

(Whispers in Kid1's ears)Yeh waali lete hain.

Kids are collecting coins and counting them as old Dadaji walks in. Small kid turns towards Dadaji as other kids

are busy.

DADAJIYeh patang kitne ki hai?

VENDORPachees ki..

All kids suddenly look at the vendor with surprise whoacts indifferent. Dadaji takes out a 50 Rs. note andhands it over to the vendor.

DADAJICharkhi bhi de do.

Cycle wala hands over the patang and charkhi to dadaji

KID1Dadaji yeh patang hamari hai.

DADAJI(Childishly)

Nahin meri hai..

Dadaji walks away with kite as kids looks on. Camera pansfrom kids to balloons.

SCENE2: DINNER TABLE NIGHT ONE

INT. DINING TABLE NIGHT

[Sound: Light mood]

Dadaji is clumsily eating food as aunty who is wearing aneck rest looks on. Aunty is sewing a sweater and

watching TV. Kite and charkhi are visible.

DADAJIManu ka cheque jama kara diya.Bacchon ka support ho toretirement is bliss. Ab mainaaram se patang udaonga.

AUNTYDaal pocho moonh se. Patangudaayenge.

Dadaji wipes out daal from his moustache.

AUNTY

Oh ho...

Aunty extends napkin to him. Dadaji raises his hands forjug. Aunty gets him the jug and pours water as she

watches TV only. Dadaji looks on at Aunty.

AUNTYRam naam lene ki umrahai....patang udaoge.

Dadaji rises up and gets washing his hands.

DADAJIShakespeare ne kaha tha...Kuch tokaaha tha.

Dadaji picks up the kite and is waving it around andsinging. [Udi Udi re patang meri udi re]

TRANSITION[HOW]

[Sound: Child like, Happy, Over ambitious]We see Dadaji getting ready in the morning as Aunty keepsa glass of milk besides him. He is tying his shoe laces.He is dressed in shorts and T-Shirt. He puts all therelated paraphernalia keenly in the bag one by one[Binoculars, water bottle, chasme ka dabba, cap, napkin].He carefully lifts the bag and is going outside. Doorcloses. Door opens again and he returns back to pick upcharkhi.

TRANSITION

SCENE 3:

EXT. MORNING Dadaji CROSSING ROAD

Dadaji can be seen passing a road to we pan up to see astatue of Rani Laxmi Bai holding her sword.

SCENE4:

EXT. MORNING TIME. JOGGING PARK

Kids are flying kite and group of people can be seenexercising and doing yoga, running, brisk walking,jogging. [focus on three people Dadaji will ask helpfrom]. Dadaji reaches park, enters it and finds the samekids flying kite. Dadaji enters the park with kite. Kidtakes a note of the Dadaji.

KID2Dekh dekh wahi kal waale Dadaji.

All the kids turn to look at Dadaji. We register smallkid who is holding the charkhi and standing at the

periphery.

KID1 Yeh Dadaji patang udaenge kya?

KID2 lagta to yahi hai...

Small kids looks at Dadaji who puts his bag and is doingexercise. Stretches and lifts to get ready for the kiteflying. Inserts of kite turning and twisting as Dadaji isturning around. Kite shivers as does Dadaji. Dadaji bendsand shoulder cracks [sound]. All the kids are laughing.Dadaji takes out all the paraphernalia and charkhi andlooks at it. He looks around and goes to kids.{sound:

morchang music begins} He observes kid1 who isdexterously flying kite. He watches his delicate hand

movements, his turning/giving twists to the kite.

KID2 Abe idhar hi aa raha hai.

DADAJIbacchon yeh kana baandh do mereliye??

All kids are silent they all turn to the kid1 at centre. As the small kid raises his hand...

KID1 Abhi hum apni patang uda rahe

hain baad mein bandhenge.

Angry Dadaji looks around at various people andapproaches them. Dadaji comes back to kids.

DADAJI Agar tum meri patang baandh doge

to tum logon ko chocolate doonga.

Small kid is dazzled.

KID1Humein nahin chaiye chocolate.

Dadaji is angry he takes a pause, turns around and picksup his bag and leaves. Kids are still flying kites andlaughing.

KID1 Abey Dadaji ki patang to udi hi

nahin.

KID2 Are chalklate mil jaati.

KID3Nahin kuch bhi ho hum log us

Dadaji ki madad nahi karenge.

A visual of five small birds sitting together on woodenplank as one large bird looks on. {Time lapse}

Kids are flying kite. They are giving dor to every otherexcept small kid who is just holding the charkhi and islooking at the kites.

KID2 Abe! woh dekh Dadaji phir aa

gaya.

Kids looks at Dadaji who is walking in slowmo and iscarrying a laptop in his hand. Dadaji opens the laptopand as kids look on he opens Youtube and searches how toknot your kite and is watching a video. Montage of him running for a twig. Him measuring the thread. Doingprecise holes and tying his kite. When he is done hehangs his kite in balance and kids look on with asurprise on their face.

KID2 Abey Dadaji ka kana to bandh

gaya.

[Sound: Sense of achievement]. Dadaji is proudlydisplaying his kana to kids and those around. Peoplefinding it weird.[Mood changes]. After a while Dadajisits again and attaches the thread and is trying to flythe kite. He is trying hard but he is not gettinganywhere. Kids laughing again. Dadaji is gettingconscious. Dadaji tries out to check the wind directionand does lots of stuff but nothing works. Kids are stillvery happy. By and by all the joggers leave the park.Kids also wrap their kite and are leaving as they crossthe Dadaji who is still jostling with the kite.

KID2dadaji ki patang to udi hi nahin.

Dadaji is all alone in the park and is tired and lookingat the kite.

SCENE 5

Dadaji is walking on the same road and camera tilts from him to red light. [Sad Mood]

INT. DRAWING ROOM [EVENING]

Dadaji enters with kite and related stuff in his hand. Aunty is watching Swami Ramdev's show.

AUNTYud gayi??..

Dadaji falls on sofa. Sighs.

A visual of kite suddenly sinking low. Dadaji gives her alook.

(Cont'd)Chalo isi bahane kana bandhana toseekh hi gaye.

Ramdev baba on TV says "Karne se hoga". As dadaji nods atthe suggestion.

CUT TO [TIME LAPSE HOW:MAY BE SOUND]

Dadaji is flipping a book "Kite flying for Dummies" andis making a list of instructions.

AUNTYBook padh ke kaun patang udatahai.

DADAJIBook likhi hai to logon ke liyehi likhi hogi na.

AUNTYDummies ke liye.

Skype call on Dadaji's laptop. Dadaji receives it. Onscreen we see his son is sitting holding his son(Dadaji's grandson) at his lap. Grandson is holding aballoon. A lava lamp can be seen behind Dadaji's laptopin background.

SONDadaji ko namste bolo.

CHILD(uninterested)

Namaste.

SON Abhi apni duniya mein hi masthai.

Child runs away and is lingering in the background.

DADAJI Thanks Yaar.

SON(Shocked)

Kya Papa!! (digresses) Aurbataiye kya chal raha hai?

AUNTYPatang udaane ki koshish kar rahehain.

SON

Patang? AUNTY

Wo bhi Books padh ke, researchkar ke.

SONKya Papa aap bhi. Patang udanihai to Bacchon ki tarah udao.Carefree.

DADAJI(curious)

Yaar tu kaise patang udata tha.

SONNothing special. just kanabandho. chuddiya do aur patang udjaayegi.

DADAJIchuddiya?

Dadaji starts to flip the book as he looks into it.

SON(gestures of holding kite)

Arey, just ask anyone to hold akite for you and ucchal de.

Dadaji looks into the book and arrives at a page.

DADAJIOh Launching!

Sound of child falling in the background.

Son rises up and goes to check him. As he rises one seesa balloon hanging high in the air.

DADAJIIs he alright?

AUNTYSola de usey raat ho gayi hai.

SONYa ya. Just ask anybody forassistance and you will be fine.

Dadaji turns around to see and looks at Aunty who issitting in Lion's posture, is doing Kapalbhati.

DADAJI

Guddi, kal tu bhi chalegi patangudaane.

Guddi aunty gives a stern look.

DADAJIjust kidding..

SCENE 6:

Dadaji is walking down the same road and camera tiltsfrom Dadaji to something funny again.

SCENE 7: JOGGING PARK

EXT. Morning. Garden

Dadaji enters the garden. Kids are already flying kite.

KID2 Arey dekho Dadaji phir se aa

gaya.

Uncle goes to kids and tells them "aaj apni patang katnese bachane ko tayar rehna"..[stranger ko kuch dena nahinhai.] Kids in unison nod against giving any kind ofchuddiya. Dadaji nods determined. Dadaji goes out on roadand is waving his hands. A guy in suit is driving andstops and comes out.

DADAJIPls. ek emergency hai. Help me.

Man rushes with the Dadaji and Dadaji hands him the kite. As he is bewildered holding the kite.[sound: funny music

begins]

DADAJIWhen I tell you please launch it.

Man launches the kite and Dadaji clumsily flies the kite. As he is unable to do it. Multiple shots of man giving

launch to the kite. Dadaji is unable to fly the kite. The man can be seen leaving and Dadaji is trying to stop

him.[funny music ends] Kids are laughing. Dadaji looks atkites flying in the sky and then looks at his own kite.

KID3Dadaji ki patang to aaj bhi nahinudi.

We see Dadaji sitting on the ground as kids pass by. As kids pass by, small kid stops and looks at dadaji whoz

busy in rolling the spool.

TRANSITION : WIFE ROLLING WOOLLEN SPOOL

SCENE 8: INT. ROOM (AVOID SITING BESIDES EACH OTHER)

Dadaji enters the room. AUNTY

Aaj bhi nahin udi kya??

DADAJIMujhe patang hi nahin udaani.

Dadaji goes and sits on a swing placed inside room. Auntylooks at him with concern. Fetches him a glass of waterand stands behind the swing. Aunty's hands are onDadaji's shoulders.

AUNTYBatao kya hua?

DADAJIBas nahin udani thi aur nahinudi.

AUNTYEk baat batao. Tum enjoyment keliye films dekh sakte ho. Bookspadh sakte ho...yeh patang hikyon udaani hai?

Dadaji is silent. Non responsive.

AUNTYHoon...??

DADAJIYou will laugh at me.

Aunty puts her hand on his shoulder.

DADAJI

main bas kone mein charkhi pakadke khada rehta tha. Aur wohpatang uddate the. Unke haanthitne fast move karte the. Dheeldena. phir kheenchna. Penchladana. Turns dena. Maine bhi kaibaar koshish ki magar ho hi nahinpaaya. Bas ek baar apni patangakash mein udate dekhna chahtahoon. Tu to jaanti hi hai ki mainkitna clumsy hoon. Is tarah kekaam main kar hi nahin pata. Carpark karna. Taale mein chaabhidaalna.

AUNTY Aur ek cup se doosre mein chai

daalna. Cheque book mein detailsbharna. Note ginna...

Aunty's gaze fall on Dadaji who is continuously lookingat her. Aunty stops.

AUNTYYou know tum meri patang ho.Hilti dulti

DADAJI Aur to dor hai neeche kheechti

rehti hai.

AUNTYDor hi patang ko sambhal kerakhti hai.]

AUNTYVarna patang ud nahin sakti.Chalo utho change kar lo.

As aunty's hands are on Dadaji's shoulder who is swingingslowly camera pans from them to a kite that is waiving toand fro with threads attached to it. [sound: rockingchair/swing]

CUT TO

Dadaji and aunty are lying on bed. Aunty is sleepingsound while Dadaji is getting restless in bed.[camerarotating and coming close to dadaji's face, random soundstarts coming in] He is dreaming visuals of kitesflying, aeroplane, helicopters, toys, birds, his son'sskype video. Suddenly Dadaji wakes up. He is amazed andhappy.
