A STUDY ON THE AIR POLLUTION AWARENESS OF SLU STUDENTS IN THE CITY OF BAGUIO

Abstract:

The study focuses on the awareness of different Saint Louis University (SLU) students in the City

of Baguio regarding air pollution. This study aims to measure their knowledge and attitude on the level

of air pollution at the City of Pines. The researcher uses survey method to gather the different data from

the different schools in SLU. The study attempts to show if age, gender, and school affects the

awareness of the students regarding air pollution. This study tries to recommend remedies to help fight

air pollution.

Introduction:

The study aims to measure the awareness of the different SLU students in the City of Baguio

regarding air pollution. It will take into the account the gender, the age, and the school of the

respondents as how they can affect on the knowledge and attitude towards air pollution.

The City of Baguios gradual urbanization has its own bad effects which include excessive

exploitation of natural resources, land pollution, water pollution, air pollution and etc. Unbridled

urbanization and uncontrolled migration obviously come with its concomitant problems such as

congestion, traffic, pollution, garbage and unemployment among others that we are sadly familiar with.

This study also addresses the rapid urbanization of Baguio if it is going to be a livable city. And this study

is particularly concern about air pollution.

Air is the name given to the Earth's atmosphere used in breathing and photosynthesis. This is

very vital for humans and other living things to survive. Air pollution is the introduction into the

Atmosphere of chemicals, particulates, or biological materials that cause discomfort, disease, or death

to humans, damage other living organisms such as food crops or damage the natural environment or

built environment. Air pollution is caused by some major pollutants such as Nitrogen Oxide (NOx), Sulfur

Oxide (Sox), Carbon Dioxide (CO), and Chlorofluorocarbons (CFC) which is produce by the people in their

day to day life.

Alarming facts show that Baguio City is considered to be the most polluted city in the Philippines

due to air pollution as of 2012. The holidays such as Christmas and New Year, including the Panagbenga

festival, are among the times when pollutants suspended in the air increase, the DENR said. According to

Environmental Management Bureau (EMB), taxicabs and private vehicles cause most of the pollution.

Kaingin, vehicles, and the exhaust from the central business district are the main cause of air pollution in

Baguio City.

Methodology:

The data that has been obtained in this study came from 30 random SLU students who were

surveyed by the researcher. The students were asked 20 questions to determine their awarenessregarding air pollution, 10 questions to measure their knowledge and 10 questions to determine their

attitude.

The researcher uses random survey method to eliminate the unnecessary bias while conducting

the study. This will also assure that the data that will be utilized to the various SLU students will clearly

reflect the level of knowledge and attitude that is needed in the study.

By gathering the different answer of the respondents, the researcher can formulate the

necessary test to measure the awareness of the SLU student regarding the issue of air pollution in

Baguio City.

First to consider is the type of test that will be use to assess the different factors that affect the

awareness of the SLU students. The gender, the age, and the type of school require different type of

test. The researcher uses T-test to measure the effect of gender both in the attitude and knowledge

regarding the air pollution in Baguio City. Anova was used to measure the effect of age and type of

school both in the knowledge and attitude regarding the issue.

Second, the researcher uses the SPSS program to perform the necessary test needed to

determine the significance of the study. Every necessary variable were coded such as the gender, age,

type of school of the students and their answers to the questions.

Random surveying of the SLU students give the researcher more room to eliminate the unnecessary

biases and errors to the study. The true or false questions is done or desired primarily to measure the

knowledge of the students while the Likert Scale is used to measure the attitude level of the students.

Discussion:

The results showed that the gender, age, and type of school do not affect the awareness of the

SLU student regarding air pollution in Baguio City. These imply that whether the respondents are male

or female, their genders do not affect their outlook about air pollution. It is also true that the number of

age and the type of school do not affect the awareness of students regarding air pollution in Baguio City.

Air pollution is a serious issue that every one of us should be mindful with. This calls not only a

government effort but also an individual initiative to address and solve.

Recommendation:

1) The government must be tight about handling these issue through implementing laws andregulations.

2) Conduct educational programs for the enhancement of the awareness of the people in the city.(E.g. School Seminars)

3) Participating in community services that would lessen or decrease air pollution.
