The commercial vehicle sector, like other sectors, has also been hard-hit by the global economic crisis. However, thanks to our Global Excellence Program, we prepared Daimler Trucks early on to cope with crises — by means of efficiency, flexibility, and active management of market cycles. As a result, we posted EBIT of €1.6 billion even in 2008, a year that was shaken by crises. And of course, also in 2009 we keep working hard for our long-term success.

The truck markets are experiencing the most dramatic global down-turn in decades. However, as the world market leader, we have a motto that applies even in difficult times: “Trucks for the World!” Especially during downturns, we prepare ourselves in a targeted manner for the next upswing. One demonstration of this approach is our involvement in markets with high growth potential such as Russia and India.

The issue of environmental protection is no longer of much interest in the truck industry. However, our claim is still that we are “Shaping Future Transportation.” That’s why Daimler will invest more than €10 billion in research and development in 2009 and 2010. The result will be trucks that are worth the money — for our customers and our environment.

To sum up, the commercial vehicle industry will be facing a set of severe challenges in 2009. But Daimler Trucks will not waver from its course. I invite you to see the evidence of that for yourselves on the following pages.

Sincerely,Andreas RenschlerMember of the Board of Management of Daimler AG,responsible for Daimler Trucks

Daimler Trucks has five strong brands under its umbrella. Our pro-ducts enable us to offer tailored solutions and sustainable technolo-gies worldwide.

Trucks Europe/Latin AmericaThe Mercedes-Benz brand represents Trucks Europe/Latin America, where it is a synonym for top product and service, quality, efficiency, reliability and sustainability, summarized in our values: “Trucks you can trust”. The brand Mercedes-Benz offers individual and reliable solutions in medium and heavy-duty trucks for long distance trans-port, construction sites or short-radius distribution. For many decades now, the pioneering spirit at Mercedes-Benz Trucks has brought forth groundbreaking innovations, ranging from alternative drive trains to active and passive safety systems.

Trucks NAFTAFreightliner Trucks, the largest division of Daimler Trucks North America, manufactures Class 5-8 trucks that serve a wide range of commercial vehicle applications. Its commitment to innovation, technology and responsive customer relationships allow customers to “Run Smart”.

The Western Star brand offers premium-class heavy-duty trucks, primarily for use by owner-operators or small fleets. Western Star serves market niches such as special and construction site applica-tions as well as long-haul transport. With their striking exteriors and preference for off-road applications, the vehicles are without a doubt “Serious trucks for serious truckers”.

The yellow school buses of Thomas Built Buses are a common sight on North American roads. North America’s leading school bus manufacturer can look back on a long history, as Thomas Built Buses has been the embodiment of innovative design, safety and top quality since 1916.

Trucks AsiaThe Mitsubishi Fuso brand is renowned in Asia, the Middle East, Africa and around the world as a manufacturer committed to quality. With a clear focus on quality, efficiency and hands-on usability, Mitsubishi Fuso designs and delivers vehicles that customers can trust, day after day. Mitsubishi Fuso trucks and buses are backed by a broad parts and service commitment that goes the extra mile.

Today, Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus Corporation is an integral part of Daimler Trucks and plays a principal role as its Asia pillar, light-duty truck competence center and as Daimler Trucks’ Global Hybrid Center for advanced hybrid technology. Mitsubishi Fuso is “All for You”.

Global Excellence Management of Market CyclesThe first initiative — “Management of Market Cycles” — is designed to lessen the impact on Daimler Trucks of the cyclical developments that are typical of the sector, thus ensuring the division’s long-term profitability. The Commercial Vehicle sector is subject to strong cycles due to the specific use of the vehicles for business purposes, the life cycles of vehicle fleets, exchange rate effects, development of the global economy, and, in particular, emissions legislation. By managing the fluctuations of market cycles, we aim to ensure sus-tained profitability in all market situations in the future and to con-tinue to pursue the “profit margins instead of sales volume” policy.

Operational ExcellenceThe second initiative — “Operational Excellence” — concentrates on the rigorous reduction of material expenses and fixed costs, as well as the optimization and standardization of global processes and the increased flexibility of production plants. As the world’s largest Com-mercial Vehicle manufacturer, Daimler is intensifying its efforts to generate further synergy effects and economies of scale by further networking its individual functions and embedding its products in an intelligent component-sharing strategy. As a result, future truck generations will be equipped not only with engines from a common heavy-duty engine platform, but also with a common electrical and electronic architecture and standardized axle components.

Growth and Market PenetrationThe objective of the third initiative is to further expand and strengthen Daimler Trucks’ strong global position as the world’s largest truck manufacturer. This includes opening up new markets including Russia, India and China, which are displaying high growth potential. We are employing different market penetration strategies that are suited to the respective market situations. In markets where we already are active, we want to further strengthen our presence and therefore focus more intensely on the customers’ needs.

Future Product Generations and TechnologiesEnsuring that future product generations offer innovations and even more value for customers is the strategic goal of the fourth initiative of Global Excellence. In this way, Daimler Trucks is underscoring its leadership in new technologies. This is clearly evident in the new product generation of the Mercedes-Benz Actros. An important focus at Daimler is alternative drive systems. The company is today the leader in the development of hybrid drives for buses and trucks. These activities — also in the fields of natural gas and fuel cell drives — are combined in the Daimler initiative Shaping Future Transporta-tion.

Global ExcellenceDaimler Trucks has been using the Global Excellence program to implement and support its strategic approach since 2005. The program concentrates on short, medium, and long-term goals that are based above all on boosting efficiency and making the most of economies of scale.

Global Excellence encompasses four initiatives:Management of Market Cycles, Operational Excellence, Growth and Exploitation of Markets, and Future Product Generations and Technologies.

The Commercial Vehicles sector has not been spared the impact of the global financial and economic crisis: In the fourth quarter of 2008 truck markets worldwide suffered the steepest declines recorded in decades. With the Global Excellence program, the Daimler Trucks division started in 2005 to introduce various initiatives designed to ensure its competitiveness over the long term and to maintain its position as the world leader in its sector.

The program’s most important measure is Management of Market Cycles: This includes flexible production capacities and work time models as well as global procurement activities and global produc-tion networks, which Daimler Trucks uses to exploit the advantages of having production facilities at different locations around the world. Examples include the restructuring of Daimler Trucks North America with a concentration on the core brands Freightliner and Western Star and the expansion of our presence in the new markets that pre-sent opportunities for long-term growth, including Russia, India, and China.

In addition, we rely on a highly competitive range of products for our success. These include in particular our economical and environmentally friendly trucks with BlueTec technology, including the new Mercedes-Benz Actros for the European markets, which made its debut at the 2008 IAA Commercial Vehicles, Freightliner’s Cascadia heavy-duty truck in North America, and the improved Fuso Super Great in Japan. Our main focus here remains a consistent and thorough approach to the further development of fuel-efficient, low-emission drive system variants.

From a regional perspective, we intend to expand our presence in the emerging economies of countries in Asia and Eastern Europe and thereby open up additional growth potential.

Shaping Future TransportationDaimler Trucks and Daimler Buses are forging ahead with measures for significantly reducing the fuel consumption and the CO2 and pollutant emissions of their vehicles. The world’s leading commercial vehicle manufacturer expresses this commitment in its “Shaping Future Transportation” initiative. The initiative fully incorporates the Daimler brands Mercedes-Benz,Freightliner, Mitsubishi Fuso, Orion, and Thomas Built Buses. Daimler’s CleanDrive Technologies play a crucial role in this endeavor, encom-passing efficient, clean drive systems and alternative fuels for allvehicle classes from light vans to heavy-duty trucks, and for all Groupbrands around the globe. More than 225,000 Daimler commercialvehicles with CleanDrive Technologies are already on the road aroundthe world. In addition, Daimler is the world’s leading supplier of alternative driveconcepts, having already delivered about 9,000 “green” commercialvehicles to customers. Hybrid technology plays a key role in these vehicles, as it can reduce diesel consumption by up to one third, depending on the application. Daimler is the global leader for hybrid commercial vehicles, having delivered some 1,700 Orion hybrid buses to North America, as well as more than 200 Freightliner hybrid trucks and over 550 hybrid light buses and trucks from Mitsubishi Fuso.

Further expansion of activitiesThe alternative drive systems from Daimler Trucks and Daimler Busesare scheduled to be used by customers in further product segmentsand regions. In North America, Freightliner will manufacture up to1,500 M2e hybrid trucks over the next three years. In the meantime, the second-generation hybrid bus has been launched on the marketin Japan under the name Fuso Aero Star Eco Hybrid. And in Europe,Mercedes-Benz has handed over the first Atego BlueTec Hybriddelivery trucks to customers for trials. The first Mercedes-Benz city

bus with a hybrid drive system, the Citaro G BlueTec Hybrid, will bedelivered to customers at the end of 2009. In addition, Mercedes-Benz celebrated the world premieres of three hybrid trucks at last year’s IAA Commercial Vehicles. The Mercedes-Benz Axor BlueTec Hybrid is the first long-distance haulage hybrid prototype. The Econic was pre-sented in two hybrid versions: The Econic BlueTec Hybrid with a diesel engine, and the Econic NGT Hybrid which is the first hybrid concept with a biogas engine worldwide.

On the road to zero emissionsThrough continued further development, Daimler’s diesel engines have evolved into high-tech drive systems that will remain the back-bone of the commercial vehicle industry for many years to come. Diesel engines have great potential, as evidenced by their steadily reduced emissions and continuously increasing fuel efficiency. As a result, emissions of particulates and nitrogen oxides, for example, have decreased by more than 90 percent on average since 1990.Mercedes-Benz trucks and buses equipped with state-of-the-art BlueTec diesel technology combine these environmental improve-ments with economic benefits for the vehicle operator. This has resulted in further substantial cuts in fuel consumption. In the case of long-haul trucks, for example, the annual reduction accounts to around 2,000 liters of fuel, or more than five tons of CO2 emissions. By comparison with other types of automobiles, and taking the high transport volumes of its commercial vehicles into account, trucks that only consume one liter of fuel per 100 kilometers have long been a reality. At the same time that Daimler develops fuel-saving and environmentally compatible drive systems, the company is committed to researching and using alternative fuels. Developments here extend from clean con-ventional fuels such as gasoline and diesel to biofuels and hydrogen for vehicles with fuel cell drives.

September 2008 100th An-niversary of the Mannheim plant. The Mercedes-Benz plant in Mannheim celebrates the 100th anniversary of its exis-tence at the Waldhof location. Carl Benz founded the plant in October 1908 when he moved the automotive production of Benz & Cie to the Luzenberg. Today, the location with its ap-proximately 8,900 employees is home to a bus production facility and a foundry in addition to truck engine production.

New products from Daimler Trucks at the 62nd IAA Commercial Vehicles 2008. Mercedes-Benz celebrates three “green” world premieres at the motor show, including the Axor BlueTec Hybrid, the first hybrid prototype for use in long-distance transport. For municipal ap-plications, the brand presents the Mercedes-Benz Econic with two hybrid variants: the Econic BlueTec Hybrid equipped with

Actros named “Truck of the Year 2009.” The new Mercedes-Benz Actros impresses the inter-national trade press and does a hat trick: Every generation of the Actros has been named “Truck of the Year.” With its innovative technology, the third generation of the Actros is also a trendset-ter on the market. Moreover, it’s the first long-haul truck series to feature an automated transmis-sion as standard equipment.

October 2008 Restructuring of the truck business in North America. Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) presents a plan to optimize and restructure its business operations. In doing so, the company is responding to the sustained weak demand and structural changes in important core markets. Production of the Sterling Trucks brand will be discontinued as of March 2009. DTNA is therefore focusing its resources on the Freightliner and Western Star brands.

December 2008 Daimler Trucks forms a strategic part-nership with the Russian truck manufacturer Kamaz. As part of this deal, Daimler Trucks acquires

a 10% stake in Kamaz. The strategic partnership provides Daimler Trucks with an entry into the Russian volume market. The step is in line with the company’s growth strategy and the consis-tent implementation of the Global Excellence Program.

Daimler Trucks North America delivers more than 230 “green” trucks to Los Angeles and Long Beach. This means that Daimler Trucks North America is the manufacturer of one of the first and biggest truck fleets with natural gas-powered engines in the U.S. The harbors of Los Angeles and Long Beach are

using very low-emission natural gas trucks to help support the public initiative for “green” harbors in California.

January 2009 Decision to build a new stamping facility in Kuppenheim. The new stam-ping facility for producing body parts for Mercedes-Benz trucks and the successor generations of the Mercedes-Benz A-Class and B-Class passenger cars will be built in Kuppenheim and be part of the Mercedes-Benz plant in Gaggenau.

Daimler AG and Beiqi Foton (Motor Co., Ltd.) affirm a planned joint venture through a memorandum of understan-ding. In January, a memorandum of understanding is signed for the establishment of a 50-50 joint venture for the production of medium-duty and heavy-duty trucks in China as well as for the sharing of technologies. The agreement clears the way for the Chinese government to approve the project.

February 2009 Daimler Trucks North America opens a truck production plant in Saltil-lo, Mexico. The plant, which was constructed for $300 million,

is officially opened in February 2009. The plant in Saltillo covers more than 1.3 million square feet of space and includes a produc-tion facility, a logistics center, an administration building, and a training center. The plant will produce Freightliner’s new flag-ship, the Cascadia heavy-duty Class 8 truck.

March 2009 Actros Bau. The new Mercedes-Benz Actros Bau, which is part of the family of vehicles named Truck of the Year 2009, is ready for its market launch. The vehicle comes with a series of new features and im-provements that make it ideal for use at construction sites. Among the new features is the Power-Shift offroad automatic transmis-sion with extremely short shifting times and a correspondingly minimized interruption of the positive engagement.

Daimler Trucks sells the 500th Mitsubishi Fuso hybrid truck in Japan. More than 500 Mitsubishi Fuso Canter Eco Hybrids have been sold in Japan since the vehicle was introduced on the market in 2006. Fuso delivered around 250 light hybrid trucks to customers in 2008 alone (+64% on the figure for 2007).
