ScienceDate: Dec. 2, 2013I. Objective: Differentiate how igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks are formedII. Subject Matter: How Rocks are formed Ref. Modern Earth Science pp. 196-200 Science and Health: An Integrated Approach 5 pp.331-332 EPOW pp. 236-253 Materials: rocks, pictures of rocksIII. Procedure

A. Preparation1. Review: Friction2. Review drill

A. Developmental Activities1. Motivation: Show a rock to the pupils and ask them to describe it.2. Presentation

The earth is made up of land, water and earth. The earth’s crust is made up of solid materials. Forces on the earth’s surface break down the the earth’s crust into rocks. Rocks are what the crust of the earth is made of. The study of rocks is called petrology. Rocks are made of minerals, like quartz, calcite, feldspars, and micas. Most rocks are made from more than one mineral, but there are quite a few kinds that are made from only one mineral. Tell the pupils that they will find out the difference between igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks.

3. Activity/DiscussionProblem: What is the difference between igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks.a. Gather data about the three kinds of rocks.b. Share ideas with the members of your group regarding the three kinds of rocks.c. Write your inputs in the table below

IGNEOUS ROCKS SEDIMENTARY ROCKS METAMORPHIC ROCKS

Page 2: Dec. 2

4. GeneralizationClassification of Rocks1. Igneous rocks - forms from cooled magma or lava. If it forms in underground pockets,

then it cools to form intrusive igneous rock, such as granite. If it forms above ground after a volcanic eruption, it becomes extrusive igneous rock, such as obsidian. Examples: granite, basalt, pumice, obsidian, andesite

pumice

2. Sedimentary rocks formed from sediments. Sediments are particles that have worn off other rocks. The particles are sand, silt and clay. Sand has the largest particles while clay has the smallest. If there are lots of pebbles mixed with the sand, it is called gravel. (pebbles, gravel, sand, clay, bones, shell of animals) The sediments become rocks when they are buried or compacted by pressure from the weight above it. Another way it becomes rock is when erosion from water and weather carries the sediments in bodies of water like oceans and seas, pressed tightly together for even thousands of years and hardened on the ocean’s floor. Some rocks include bones and shells of animals. Some remains of dead plants and animals imprint themselves in between the rocks and become fossils. Examples: sandstone, conglomerate, limestone, siltstone, shale, coal

Sandstone

3. Metamorphic rocks - form when other types of rocks undergo extreme heat, pressure and chemical processes deep in Earth's crust. These rocks are very hard and useful. Examples: marble, slate, quartzite, gneiss, schist

marble

5. ApplicationGive three examples each of the three classifications of rocks

6. EvaluationWrite A if it describes igneous rock, B if sedimentary rock and C if metamorphic rock.1. Rocks formed from volcanic materials.2. It is formed from cooled magma or lava.3. Formed due to extreme heat and pressure.4. Marble, slate and gneiss are examples of these rocks. 5. Materials that are deposited, became hard and formed layers due to pressure.

Find out the uses of rocksScience

Date: Dec. 3, 2013I. Objective: Identify the uses of rocksII. Subject Matter: Uses of rocks Ref. Science and Health:An Integrated Approach 5 p. 334 http://www.coaleducation.org/lessons/wim/20.htm Materials: manila paper, pentel penIII. Procedure

A. Preparation1. Review: Kinds of rocks2. Review Drill

B. Developmental Activities1. Motivation: Show pictures or actual objects of rocks that are used as decoration, tools or jewelries2. Presentation

Tell the pupils that they will find out the uses of rocks3. Activity/Discussion

Problem: What are the uses of rocks?Procedure1. Bring out data gathered about the uses of rocks.2. Share ideas with group mates on the uses of rocks3. List down in a manila paper, the uses of rocks.4. Share inputs gathered in class

4. Generalization Uses of Rocks

1. It can be used as tools like arrowheads, knives ex. obsidian2. It can be made into statues, monuments, tombstones ex. granite, marble3. It can be used as gemstones and jewelries4. It can be used as building materials ex. sandstones, marble, basalt, granite, limestone(cement),

conglomerate, schist,gneiss5. Materials for constructing roads and bridges ex. basalt, granite, sandstone. Shale(bricks and

cement)6. It is used for decoration. Ex. marble7. It is used in scouring, scrubbing, and polishing materials. Ex. pumice8. It is the material in making chalkboards ex. slate9. It is used in manufacturing paper, insecticides, linoleum, fibreglass, glass ex. limestone

5. Application Give five examples of rocks and their uses6. Evaluation Write down five uses of rocks on a ¼ sheet of paper

IV. Assignment Study the ff.: weathering of rocks, agents of weathering and effects of weathering

EsPDate: Dec. 4, 2013I.Layunin: Nakasasagot ng tama sa maikling pagsusulitII. Paksang-Aralin - KapayapaanIII. Pamamaraan

Page 4: Dec. 2

3. Pagbibigay ng pamantayan4. Pagbasa ng Panuto5. Pagsagot sa pagsusulit6. Pagwawasto sa mga sagot

ScienceDate: Dec. 4, 2013I. Objective: Identify the agents of weathering (e.g. water, wind, people, animals, plants)II. Subject Matter: Agents of Weathering Ref. EPOW 5 pp. 254-257 internet Materials: manila paper, pentel penIII. Procedure

A. Preparation1. Review: Uses or rocks2. Review drill

B. Developmental Activities1. Motivation: Show a picture of a weathered rock

2. Presentation Rocks is not the same as when it was formed. They undergo changes. How?

3. Activity/DiscussionProblem: What causes rocks to break?Answer the following questions1. What is weathering of rocks?2. What are the agents of weathering?3. How do the following weathered rocks?

a. Water b. wind c. animals d. plants e. people4. Generalization

Weathering refers to the changes in the physical or chemical characteristics of rocks. They are weathered in different ways.a. Mechanical weathering – rocks break physically b. Chemical weathering – there are changes in the composition of the rocks.

Agents of weatheringA. Water1. Running Water – rocks move when pushed or pulled by running water. They bump against

each other or other materials causing them to break, to be scratched or to change in size and appearance.

2. Freezing water – when water in rocks freezes, they expand and pushes against the rocks causing them to crack or break.

3. Rain and underground water soak into rocks and can dissolve some of their minerals causing the rocks to have some holes.

4. Chemical reaction between oxygen, carbon dioxide with the minerals in the rocks cause changes in their composition.

B. Wind - strong winds pick up particles of dust and sand which scratch the surface of rocks causing them to wear away.

Page 5: Dec. 2

C. Plants1. Roots of plants forces their way on rocks weakening the rocks and causing them to break.2. Some plants grow on rocks forcing them to crack and break.

D. AnimalsAnimals build their homes on rocks. They carve the rocks and dig holes causing them to break.

E. PeoplePeople weathered rocks to build roads, and use them as building materials.

5. ApplicationWrite down five activities of man that causes weathering of rocks.

6. Evaluation Choose your answer from the words below animals people plants water wind 1. They use machines to break down rocks. 2. They build homes in rocks causing them to break. 3. The roots grow in between rocks causing them to break. 4. They carry away soil particles in the air that scratches rocks.5. They solidify and expand in rocks creating cracks on rocks.

IV. Assignment Be ready for summative test no. 4. Study about rocks, kinds of rocks and weathering of rocks.
