December 2017
From the Principal Thankyou to our school community for another great year at
Taminmin. We have been celebrating our students’ considerable
achievements and are looking forward to some fabulous NTCET
results on the 19 December.
This year we have been on the Continuous School Improvement
journey and are working on a Business Plan to take us into 2020
that has input from the whole school community. We have been
looking at our data including demographics, student learning
results, perception data and school processes. This will lead to a
new school Mission and Vision to take us into the future which I will
look forward to sharing with you in the New Year.
Our STEAM building is nearing completion and we hope to start
running classes early in term 1. It includes the most up-to-the-
minute learning spaces with both indoor and outdoor learning,
break out areas, modern technology, maker spaces and inspired
furnishings.
Please keep in touch with us through our Facebook page. This
includes the numerous highlights and important information.
Thankyou to our teachers, support staff and administration staff
who work so hard to ensure that students are successful learners.
Thanks to our School Board and Chair Beverley Ratahi who
continue to be a great support for our school.
This newsletter highlights Taminmin College award winners and
some of the major achievements of 2017. Wishing you all a very
happy and safe Christmas and New Year

Christmas Break Hours of
Operations The College will be closed from Friday 22
December and will be re-opening to the
public on Thursday 4 January.
School Resumes
Students resume on Monday 29 January
2018. Teachers commence on Thursday 25
January.
From the School Board Chair This time last year I was
wondering how the year
could have gone so
quickly with another
Christmas on the
horizon. 2017 has been
no different, in fact, I’m
starting to think each
year passes more quickly
than the previous. Whilst it is never possible
to complete the ‘to-do’ list for Taminmin
College which the Board commences each
year, it is very important to always stop and
acknowledge where we have come from and
what has been achieved. For me personally,
I delight at the end of each year of the
committed students, parents, staff and
community members that I have had the
opportunity and pleasure to work with
throughout the year to not only progress
issues at Taminmin College for the benefit of
our rural community, but in many instances,
for the benefit of public education more
broadly across our Territory.
Our most exciting project this year has been
the STEM (STEAM!) building which, all going
well, will see student learning commencing in
Term 1. The Principal has ensured you have
received regular ‘peeks’ during the year and I
recommend you visit our Facebook page to
see the latest photos from last week, if you
haven’t already. The Board acknowledges
the efforts of staff this year in their flexibility
working around the building project – nothing
great ever comes without a little discomfort –
and it will be a great facility to expand
opportunities and experiences for our
students, staff and rural community! I
particularly valued the opportunity to attend
the College and recognise the efforts of our
magnificent staff on World Teachers’ Day in
October this year. What most of you don’t see
long after dark are the unpaid hours our staff
put in to developing inspirational programs,
marking, rehearsals, contacting parents to
keep us informed and involved and looking

out for our kids during these difficult teenage
years. Bless them all.
Our strategic vision with our sister school in
China was progressed this year with a
reciprocal visit from No 7 Middle School,
Anhui Province. Our Certificate III Business
students have already begun realising
benefits from this relationship with a recent
study tour to China.
A major focus of the Board in 2017 has been
pursuing the reinstatement of school based
constable resources. Those of you who have
been at the school for a while know that the
Board gets particularly concerned when we
consider our students (and rural community)
are disadvantaged and Government rhetoric
doesn’t match action. After an unacceptable
bureaucratic response from the Police
Commissioner, I am awaiting a response
from the Chief Minister. Your Board will
continue to pursue this in the New Year for
you.
Myself and Board member Tessa Czislowski
were delighted to participate in the School
Review in September this year and even
more delighted with the outcomes. I also
need to thank additional Board members
Miriam McDonald, Rob McIntosh, Tabby
Fudge, Michele Sheahan, Ian Gibbins,
Leanne Thackeray, Kat Noonan and Sandra
White for their contributions to advancing
educational outcomes this year. Whilst there
has been a focus on a Continuous School
Improvement plan this year, the School
Review highlighted to me personally how far
the College has advanced since my first child
commenced here in 2010. Whilst it would be
easy to attribute that to additional buildings,
upgrades and funding, the truth is that
everything that is progressed is a result of
relationships. The major shift in that time is
due to the integrity of our exceptional
Principal, Miriam McDonald, who models
every day the benefit of respectful
relationships with her Board and school
community. Taminmin College would not be
where it is if we did not have her at the helm,
as her focus is on her students and staff, and
never self-interest. I particularly thank her
family for their understanding this year when
she may not have always been available due
to all of us and her priority of serving her
community.
We are all worn out again, which is a true
measure of how much has been achieved in
2017. I hope that you all get to relax,
reconnect with your families, reflect how
much we have achieved together as a
community and re-energise, because 2018 is
going to be even more exciting.
I wish you a very merry and safe Christmas
and New Year.
