The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph
Dear Friends, Happy New Year! As we look forward to the year ahead, the Feast that we celebrate today has much to teach us and inform our plan. This Sunday, as always on the Sunday after Christmas, we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family. In the first two readings, we hear about Abraham, our father in faith. He is our father in faith, as he hoped and trusted in God even when it seemed beyond possible that he would be given descendants to carry on the family after him and he would have to hand on his heritage to one of his servants. God challenges Abraham, and he stays the course. He trusts even when it is hard and God fulfills His promise. St. Peter encourages us in this regard as well. We heard from St. Peter a few weeks back in Advent, as he reminded us that one thousand years are as a day, and a day as a thousand years for the Lord. He also reminds us that what we think of a delay, is only God doing what He does for our good, in His own time. Only after looking back do we understand the delay. God is patient and in all our lives, He is helping us to become patient, as we trust in Him. Patience is an essential virtue for family life. Think of all the hurried and short exchanges we have. Think about all the frustrations we experience when things don’t happen according to our timetable. Patience. In Haiti, this might be the most common word that is written on the Tap Taps, the trucks that drive around transporting people through the city. Perhaps it’s because they are never on time or timely in arriving at a destination. Yet, the people of Port au Prince know this and make accommodations or just arrive when they can. As in other Caribbean or Latin
American countries, time is seen differently. Time with people is always most important and there are sacrifices that can be made so that we can attend to that which is most important at any given moment. Perhaps the most important moment of the day is the blessing you give to your children as they head out the door, or the hug you give them as you get home, or pick them up at the end of the day. It could be the short ex-change you have with your spouse at the end of a long day to hear how their day was. All of these encounters flow form the encounter we have with God daily, as we take the time to spend a while in conversation with the one who wants to inform the most important moments of our day, so that we can be attentive to how He is working, how He is encouraging us to grow in love and patience in our fami-lies. I believe that if we spend the time sorting things out with the Lord, we can figure out any problem or struggle in our lives, and not only that, but Jesus wants to help us to flourish. As we are attentive to Him, who put us first as He went to the cross, we will learn how to put others first in our lives, especially our families. The holy man Simeon waited his whole life for the fulfilment of his hope. He was assured by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he saw the Lord. He waited on the Lord and the Lord fulfilled his dream. Taking the baby Jesus in his hands he declared, "Now, Master, you may let your servant go in peace, according to your word, for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you prepared in sight of all the peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory for your people Israel." At the end of each day, our holy mother, the Church has us, her children, repeat this canticle in the breviary at night prayer. May we spend all our days waiting for that encounter so that at the end of each day, we, too, might proclaim with Simeon, “Now, Master, you may let your servant go in peace!” Sincerely yours in Jesus Christ,
Fr. Jack D. Shrum Pastor

(Lm. Antôn Nguyễn Văn Độ)
