賽馬會創意藝術中心（簡稱 JCCAC）所處建築物，前身是「山寨廠」（即上世紀六、七十年代本土家庭式輕工業）林立的「石硤尾工廠大廈」。內裡保留了昔日的工廠大廈建築特色，是一項獲得香港建築師學會「全年境內建築大獎」的改建項目。JCCAC於 2008年開幕，以自負盈虧及非牟利機構的模式運作。作為一所多元化及對外開放的藝術村兼藝術中心，JCCAC提供一個給藝術家／藝術團體工作，和讓公眾可近距離接觸藝術的環境。歡迎公眾於開放時間內自由參觀，親身發掘和感受藝術創意的氣氛。藝術村作為藝術村，JCCAC是百多個各類型藝術家和藝術團體的運作基地。當中以視覺藝術為主（包括中西畫、攝影、陶藝、雕塑、版畫、玻璃藝術、多媒體裝置等），也有表演藝術（包括音樂、舞蹈、戲劇等），和其他藝術類型（例如設計、電影、社區藝術等）。藝術家很多是身兼多職的個體戶，而單位的使用性質以藝術工作室或藝團辦公室為主。有活躍提供展覽、節目或課程的藝術家和藝團，通常會在單位外放置資料給訪客參考以便聯絡。有興趣參觀藝術工作室的公眾，可直接預約有關藝術家或藝團，或報名參加 JCCAC定期舉辦的公眾導賞活動。藝術中心JCCAC內有茶藝館、咖啡室、創意工藝店等，另有特色小型展覽分佈各樓層空間，而正規場地包括「黑盒劇場」和兩層「藝廊」展覽廳。各式藝術活動，例如實驗性舞台演出、主題展覽、藝術興趣班等，一般會在週末舉行。另JCCAC會定期主辦大型公開活動，包括每季的手作市集、每年12月的「JCCAC藝術節」、露天電影會、工作室導賞等。公眾可透過 JCCAC網站、每月出版的節目表或定期電子通訊，獲得最新的活動資訊。抱負藝術是推進社會文明和創意的重要動力。JCCAC成立目的包括提供創作藝術空間、培育創意人才和推廣藝術文化，希望能為支持香港藝術發展出一分力。

Jockey Club Creative Arts Centre (aka JCCAC) is an award winning architectural conversion from the former Shek Kip Mei Factory Estate, which was a stronghold for cottage industries half a century ago. It opened in 2008 and operates as a self-financed, registered charity. As a multi-disciplinary arts village and art centre, JCCAC provides studio facilities for the arts community and a relaxed environment for the public to experience arts and culture. Visitors are welcome to stroll around freely during opening hours to discover for themselves the creative spirit of the place. Arts VillageAs an arts village, JCCAC is the operation base for over 100 artists/art organisations pursuing their work in a wide array of art forms, from visual arts (including Chinese and Western painting, photography, ceramics, sculpture, printmaking, glass, multimedia installation, etc), to performing arts (e.g. music, dance, drama, etc) and other art forms (e.g. design, film, community art, etc). Many artists are self-employed and have to juggle multiple jobs. The units are mostly used as art studios and/or offices, where at the door visitors can often find programme and contact information about the artist or arts organisation for reference. Visitors interested to visit studios may directly contact the artist for appointment, or may register to join in one of our regular public guided tours. Art CentreJCCAC includes a tea house, café and craft shops. Artworks can be found dotted around the public spaces, and there are two major venues, the Black Box Theatre and two levels of Galleries. Programmes organised by artists, such as experimental stage performances, themed exhibitions and art workshops, are usually held during weekends. Regular public events presented by JCCAC include the annual JCCAC Festival in December, quarterly Handicraft Fair, rooftop film screening and public guided tours. Visitors may obtain programme information from the JCCAC website, the published monthly programme guide or by subscribing to JCCAC e-news. Our aspiration is to play a part in supporting arts development in Hong Kong through the provision of space for creative work, nurturing young talents, and the promotion of arts and culture in general.

藝述心言 Intimate Portrait

踏入12 月，「JCCAC 藝術節 2013」的連串活動正式開展。當中有

好幾場的 Art Jamming 是即興集體繪畫，發起人是駐埸藝術家

John McArthur。John 擅於繪畫人像，不時在 JCCAC 舉辦人像

寫生、人體素描等活動。但他更為人熟悉的，是在香港推廣人體（裸

體）寫生：「我在 JCCAC 的工作室幾乎每星期四晚都舉行寫生活動，

歡迎有興趣人士報名參加。」

「12 月7 日及 8 日週末下午，我會在中央庭園拉開一幅大畫布進行

「即興大卷軸」﹙Giant Draw﹚，取材視藝聯展的「吾」、「珸」、「悟」、

「伍」及「梧」，讓公眾參加即興集體繪畫。」另外在12 月14 日及15

日週末的下午，他將在中央庭園安排男女模特兒（在公眾地方當然

不是裸體的），讓公眾自由隨意地進行人像寫生﹙Public Draw﹚，

同場還有「punk folk」樂隊 THE PRIVATEERS 演奏輕音樂。「我

很相信藝術的力量在於分享，希望親切隨意的環境氣氛，可鼓勵任

何人嘗試參與藝術，從集體創作中，啟發創意思維、拉近人與人之

關係、增加正能量。我很希望公眾知道人人都可創作，只要拿起筆

來開始畫便行，創意不在乎你是否一位藝術家。」

John 來自澳州，從南昆士蘭大學藝術系畢業後，輾轉來港從事教

育工作已十多年，會說點廣東話，「去『Yum Cha』﹙飲茶﹚叫『Siu

Mai』﹙燒賣﹚無問題。」問他覺得自己是否一位香港藝術家：「在

JCCAC 設立自己的工作室，讓我有了紮根之地作發展。我有機會

與這裡很多不同類型的藝術家做『鄰居』，建立友誼，啟發我作新嘗

試，給我藝術靈感和養分，亦影響了我的藝術風格。因此我的藝術

創作生命已與香港分不開，所以我覺得自己也是一位香港的藝術家。

我也是『本地薑』。」

Among the programmes in the month-long JCCAC Festival 2013 this December, the public may join in free Art Jamming sessions organised by JCCAC resident artist John McArthur. He is one of the key proponents of nude life drawing in Hong Kong, and hosts body sessions on most Thursday evenings in his Spitting Gecko Studio at JCCAC.

“On the weekend afternoon of 7 and 8 December, I shall roll out a large canvas in the middle of the Central Courtyard to orchestrate a group drawing session – the Giant Draw - to create a work inspired by the exhibition “Five” next door in the Galleries. Then on the weekend afternoon of 14 and 15 December, the Central Courtyard will be turned into a Life Drawing studio with life male and female models (clothed ones, obviously), accompanied by music from the local “punkfolk” band THE PRIVATEERS. All are welcome!” He is passionate about sharing through arts and encourages people to try their hands at painting or drawing, “I believe that art is for everyone and cherish every opportunity to convince people that you do not need to be an artist to enjoy the creative process.”

John is an Australian who studied visual arts at the University of Southern Queensland. He has been a teacher in Hong Kong for over a decade and speaks Cantonese pretty well. We wondered what he thinks of his identity as an artist. Does he consider himself a local artist? “My development as an artist really took off after I had the chance to establish the Spitting Gecko Studio at JCCAC. I made friends with neighbouring artists who are all from various genres and inspire me in different ways. Being part of the artist village has definitely affected my creative development and artistic style. My art is so much influenced by my experience living in and being a part of the community in Hong Kong, that they are not separable. So yes, I am also a Hong Kong artist.”
