An Introduction
Windows Server
Licensing in a Physical Environment
Single Processor Servers
Rules:License all the cores in the server with a Core licence
Assign a minimum of 16 Core licences to the server
Core licences are sold in 2-packs
= 8 x 2-packs
Servers with Two or More Processors
Rules:License all the cores in the server with a Core licence
Assign a minimum of 8 Core licences to each processor
Licensing in a Virtual Environment
Datacenter Edition
Rules:License all the cores in the server with a Core licence
(16/server and 8/processor minimums apply)
Run an unlimited number of virtual machines
Standard Edition
Rules:License all the cores in the server with a Core licence
(16/server and 8/processor minimums apply)
Run two virtual machines
License all cores again to run another two virtual machines
Transitioning to Core Licences
Core Grants
Standard grant
16 Windows Server 2016 Core licences for each Windows Server 2012 R2 processor-based licence
Portals
Note that the licensing portals will not update with the number of allocated Core licences
SA Renewal
SA should be renewed on the Core licences granted
Windows Server 2012 R2
processor-based license
Windows Server 2016 Core licences
Windows Server 2016 Core licences
SA
Non-Standard Core Grants
Exceptional grants when the standard grant will not allow a customer to deploy the software in the same way
Two situations:• Processors with more than 8 cores• Windows Server Standard licences stacked to run additional virtual machines
An inventory must be prepared at renewal to document why additional Core licences should be granted
SA should then be renewed on the appropriate number of Core licences
Inventory Report
Use the Microsoft Software Inventory Logging tool or equivalent software
Requirements:• Machine generated report
• Date and time stamped
• Configuration information

16 Windows Server Core licences cover:
16 cores across 2 or fewer virtual machines
Additional sets of 8 Core licences may be assigned
to Azure to cover additional virtual machines or
virtual machines with more than 16 cores

pre-defined period of time
• Paid for like other Online Services
Azure Services
• Based on consumption
• Paid for upfront with a monetary commitment,
or in arrears on a pay-as-you-go basis
For example:
Websites: $/hour
Virtual Machines: $/hour
Storage: $/GB and $/transaction
Databases: $/GB
Monetary Commitment
Tangerine Truckers will be signing an EA with 1,500 desktops with the Professional
