Dear Annie: When ourdaughter was a child, shehad emotional issues and ex-tensive anger managementproblems. With tremendousconcern and love,we got her pro-

fessional supportand therapy, andultimately, ourdaughter learnedthe skills to controlherself. What wedid not do was tellextended familymembers of theseprivate problems. We had seen theirextreme intoler-ance for any kindof mental healthissues and did not want ourdaughter to suffer prejudicefrom her own family.

In college, the troublingincidents started again. Be-

cause of our daughters refus-al to let us have access to hermedical information, we hadno real idea of what was hap-pening. The next few yearsincluded troubling breakupswith both friends and boy-friends, extreme weight lossand talk of suicide.

Our daughter is now 32and recently married. Shesuddenly and inexplicablyhas cut us off. When we tryto communicate with her, shebecomes hysterical with rage.We have learned she has beensaying horrible things aboutus to the same extended fam-ily members we tried to pro-tect her from in childhood. Weare devastated. One relativeactually told my husband thatwe must have done somethingterrible to our daughter for herto treat us this way.

These family membersnow have a special, almostfrenzied new importance toour daughter. They judge usconstantly. To be accused ofsuch mistreatment is insultingand painful. Please print thisso these family members willstop jumping to conclusions. Reading This Can Help

Dear Reading: Most likely, the only thing that will changetheir perspective is to be on thereceiving end of your daugh-

ters erratic behavior. Despiteall the therapy she had whenyounger, her problems haventdisappeared. She has simplychosen to deal with them in

her own way, which currentlyprecludes a loving relation-ship with you. We hope thatwill change. While you cannotcontrol what the relatives think,

please take comfortin knowing you han-

dled your daughtersissues in a way thatprotected and helpedher. That is whatgood parents do.

Dear Annie:Like many people,I suffer from theeffects of multiplesclerosis. To lookat us, you wouldntknow anything iswrong. But the painI suffer from daily is

sometimes unbearable. Howshould I reply to inconsider-ate people who make com-ments like, Come on, hurryup or What is wrong with

you? I wish people wouldthink before they open theirmouths. They do not know thestruggles I face.

There is treatment for MS,but no cure. I maintain myregimen of daily injections, but most of the time I cannotcontrol its rampage. Maybethis letter will bring aware-ness to people not to judge onoutward appearances. Suf-fering in Michigan

Dear Suffering: We hopeso, but unless you are willingto tell these impatient peoplewhat the problem is, they willcontinue to behave rudely to-ward you. Please, folks, thepeople around you may becoping with terrible difcul-ties that are not visible. Bekind.

Dear Annie: I loved theletter from the Lady Doctor, who was so thrilled with herMD degree that she wantedeveryone to address her mailto Dr. Jane Doe and Mr. JohnDoe.

My wife and I met ingrad school. She went on toget a Ph.D. Her mother is soproud that she addresses all ofmy wifes letters to Dr. JaneDoe. However, she is also atraditionalist, so when shewrites to both of us, she ad-dresses her letters to Mr. and

Mrs. John Doe. My wife willquickly tell anyone who asksthat she is at least as proud ofher Mrs. degree as she is ofher Ph.D. Mr. John Doe
