Brothers may feel guilt

over siblings care of motherDear Annie: I am a single

40-year-old man. The past 18months have been rough formy family. My father passedaway, and mymother moved toFlorida. Then shehad a mild stroke.I have always

liked Florida, so Idecided to movewith Mom andhelp care for her.My two brothersstill live in ourold hometownwith their fami-lies.

Ever since ourmove here, mybrothers have given me thecold shoulder. I heard throughthe grapevine that they be-lieve I am controlling Momsmoney and taking advantageof her. That couldnt be fur-ther from the truth. I have putmy life on hold to make mymothers life better. She for-gets to take her medicationsand has lost interest in cook-ing. So I cook her meals, takeher wherever she wants to go,make her doctors appoint-ments and see that she takesthe required meds.

I have told my brothers thetruth of the situation, and sohas my mother, but nothingseems to change their minds.We have always been a closefamily, and I dont want thatto change. Is there somethingI can do to x this? Con-fused in Florida

Dear Confused: Yourbrothers may be suspicious,but it is also likely there is

some guilt mixed in, causingthem to resent you and yourimportance to Mom. Thebest way to handle this is toinclude them as much as pos-sible. Ask their opinion onMoms medical treatmentsand any major decisions.Make all nancial dealingscompletely transparent. Sendthem regular updates and cop-ies of her checkbook balance,her investments, her cash out-lay everything. Better yet,ask them to come to Florida tospend a week with Mom andsee how shes doing.

Dear Annie: I haveknown my best friend formore than 20 years. For thepast three, she has completelyforgotten my birthday. Sheusually remembers belatedlyand phones, mortied that she

overlooked it. She then writesa card and gives a gift.

I dont know what to saywhen the awkward phone call

Orshe might remember but nothave a moment to call, and bythe time things settle down,its slipped her mind. Shemay also be having memoryissues that she is too embar-rassed to mention. We dontbelieve it is deliberate, be-cause it requires much moreeffort to call, apologize andthen send a card and a gift.The next time she does this,make a joke of it. Suggest sheinvest in some belated birth-day cards for next year.

Dear Annie: I read theletter from Second Best in

Michigan, whose husbandswidowed mother controlseverything, including pick-ing her husbands clothes andscheduling their holiday gath-erings.

My husbands mother waswidowed when we married37 years ago. He was an onlychild. I can tell Michiganthat she will always be sec-ond best. My husband and Iwent to counseling, but as yousaid, Annie, the key part is thewillingness of the husbandto change. In my marriage,change was never successfulfor any length of time.
