DIAMETAL CLOSES THE GAP:

ELECTRODES FOR SPECIAL THREADS.

Those doing electrical discharge machining have found hardly any electrodes on the market for fine or special threads. Diametal remedies this situation and satisfies all kinds of customer wishes in this area.

The problem is well-known: electrodes for

standard threads – namely metric thread sizes

from M3 onwards – are available on the market

without any problem: off the shelf and at inex-

pensive prices. But those who want to spark-

erode a HA thread according to DIN58810,

i.e. a thread for bone screws and nuts, have a

bigger problem. To get an electrode for this ap-

plication area is indeed much harder. The over-

whelming majority of providers for standard-

thread electrodes decline to help.

Diametal is the knight in shining armour here:

thanks to its broad-based expertise gained

from the production of grinding tools and its

extensive know-how in the field of grinding

technology, the company can manufacture

tungsten-copper electrodes up to M1.2. Diam-

etal can also fabricate fine threads with every

conceivable pitch, trapezoidal, round and pipe

threads, and other special threads. Anyone

just in the process of inventing a new thread

can also count on us: we’ll make you the cor-

responding electrode! The limits of feasibility

when manufacturing electrodes only lie in the

minimum radii in the internal forms. Therefore,

the feasibility of very small threads has to be

looked at case by case.

As a result, EDM specialists can now offer

their customers special threads as well – with

the help of our electrodes. Diametal is concen-

trating on an important market niche with this

service and is opening up new possibilities for

its customers that they haven’t had before. In

contrast, we are deliberately keeping away

from the mass business of standard threads.

Dear Reader,

Although 2009 is now

history, it will continue

to occupy us for a long

time. It remains in our

memory as the year of big changes.

It is probably only a few of us who have

experienced years like that one, in which

new beginning, reorientation, renounce-

ment and termination have manifested

themselves to such an extent. In the

world of work, many painful decisions

have had to be made and radical mea-

sures have had to be initiated. The impact

of these changes will stay with us for a

longer period of time.

However, despite all the worries and dif-

ficulties last year has caused us, there are

also positive aspects to report: the wealth

of our experience has been enormously

enriched by the changes we have had to

make. And we will undoubtedly profit in

future from what we have learned.

At the end of what has been in many

respects a bleak year, there were already

the first signs of that delicate little

plant «upswing», which it is now our

job to nourish and cultivate. So that it

can properly flourish, we must continue

pragmatically along the path we have

taken and demonstrate a lot of flexibility

in the future.

With this in mind and in this spirit, I wish

you and all of us a successful 2010 – also

as regards the most valuable possession

we have, our health.

The technology of wheels bonded with syn-

thetic resin is already over half a century old

and it is now technically mature and very so-

phisticated. But there is no reason to do with-

out this technology in future – even when

demands get even higher. This is because

Diametal is constantly developing the resin-

bonded grinding wheels further so as to sat-

isfy the growing demands made by customers

as optimally as possible.

The demands made on the quality of the

inserts are constantly rising – above all as

regards surfaces, chipping and contouring

accuracy. An ideal solution for this set of

problems lies in the resin-bonded grinding

wheels in the versions SPB215/216. They can

be used for most materials in the insert sector

– for carbide, CBN and PCD alike. This opens

up new possibilities for the customer in pro-

duction and in the processes of production:

very good feed rates can still be achieved in

the case of smaller grit sizes – and this can

be achieved with a very good tool life for the

grinding wheels.

INSERT GRINDING TOOLS OF THE LATEST GENERATION.Diametal develops tried-and-trusted products and technologies further and adapts them to today's requirements. One example is the company's resin-bonded grinding wheels that meet the highest demands in terms of productivity.

Diametal provides perfected solutions in

the following bonding systems: synthetic

resin, metal, vitrified, metal-vitrified, and

electroplated. In addition, Diametal sup-

ports customers in their process optimisa-

tion with its engineering and consulting

services.

TOOLING /CARBIDES&CERAMICS

THE CONIXS HOB CUTTER SOLVES A LOT OF PROBLEMS.The solution for conical gear teeth from module 0.03 mm onwards is called CONIXS: the new hob cutter from Diametal delivers outstanding results and is extremely efficient and economical.

In collaboration with customers, Diametal

develops optimal solutions for their needs –

such as the new CONIXS hob cutter. Up to

now, the possibilities for the high-quality gear

cutting of bevel gears and pinions in the case

of small modules were somewhat limited. One

possible production process is wire-eroding.

This method is expensive and calls for specific

equipment and tools. For this reason, Diam-

etal is now bringing an alternative tool onto

the market: the CONIXS hob cutter.

Many of Diametal's business partners pos-

sess a conventional gear-cutting machine or

an ultra-modern automatic lathe with a gear-

cutting module. That is why the emphasis has

been placed on a rational and cost-effective

solution during the development of the new

tool. With success! The CONIXS cutter has

recently joined our range of products. Up to

now, this range has comprised hob cutters

for epicyclic and involute teeth. Now the new

hob cutter for conical tooth profiles has joined

their ranks.

The new CONIXS is based on the hob method

and can be manufactured with any kind of

profile (for instance with customised profiles

or standard profiles such as NIHS 20-25, NIHS

2002, DIN 867 etc.). It is available from mod-

ule 0.03 mm onwards and from a diameter of

8 mm onwards.

Depending on the geometry and dimensions

of the profile on the gears/pinions, Diam-

etal determines the optimal number of the

radial teeth (2 to 7). The new product con-

sists of carbide – the carbide grade and any

necessary coating is defined according to the

workpiece. Further features: rake angle in the

centre, logarithmic relief, and both left- and

right-cutting.

TOOLING /CARBIDES&CERAMICS

The first users of the new CONIXS hob cutter

are extremely satisfied with the result. One

of the reasons is that Diametal also offers its

services and shares its know-how in the de-

velopment of the teeth on the workpiece. If

they want to, customers can pace the entire

development in the hands of Diametal – from

the determination of the profile, over the in-

terplay of the toothing, to the calculation of

the angular impact and other requirements.

The 3D designs in CAD that Diametal provides

its customers with are highly valued. These

construction drawings can be directly adopt-

ed and worked on by the customers' technical

departments. Workpieces produced with this

method always match the 3D designs from

Diametal.

As usual, we are also able to simulate the

meshes and gear tooth contacts in the 3D

models for the CONIXS applications as well.

Try out our services and test our expertise

– we look forward to every challenge!

INTERNATIONAL

Diametal works successfully for the world-

wide aviation and space travel industry – and

has been doing so for more than two decades.

All employees involved are used to keeping

strictly to predefined processes and carrying

out all aspects of their work with precision.

This is – among others – a stringent demand

made on suppliers to the aerospace industry;

after all, human lives can be at stake here.

It is for this reason that the Aerospace Stan-

dard ISO 9100 was developed. It is based on

the ISO 9001 standard but has stricter regula-

tions as regards the archiving and traceability

of process data. Diametal has implemented

all these specifications and has process-re-

lated homologation (accreditation). The ob-

servance of the stipulations is periodically

checked and audited not only internally but

also by an external body.

Quality assurance is a matter for decision at

the highest level at Diametal. It is probably for

that reason that the requirements of the Aero-

space Standard were fulfilled so quickly. Di-

ametal has, after all, been certified according

to the ISO 9001 norm for a long time already

(it is also certified according to ISO 14001 and

OHSAS 18001, by the way). That’s one of the

reasons why strict compliance with processes

is second nature to Diametal staff.

The know-how the company has gathered as

a partner of the aerospace industry, where

the narrowest of tolerances are standard, also

informs all the other areas of Diametal’s ac-

tivity. The many years of experience gained

by the specialists at Diametal pays off for the

customers in every single order or project –

day in, day out.

DIAMETAL TAKES TO THE AIR.

Diametal has been working for the aerospace industry as well for many years. The demands in this sector are high, the tolerances are tight. But that is exactly where precision and know-how prove their worth.

FLASH

Two happy pieces of news to start the year

The Swiss team with Dimitri Jungo finished the

first-ever World Team Championship for pool

billiards in Hannover, Germany with a strong

5th place result. Switzerland entered this tour-

nament as underdog and proved with strong

performances that it can keep up with the top

ten countries in the world. The team has done

the Swiss billiard nation proud. It left nations

like the USA, Holland and Finland, and Ger-

many’s number one team behind it – countries

that have constantly been among the best in

the world for many years! We heartily congrat-

ulate the team for this excellent achievement!

At the election of the Seeland Sportsperson

of the Year, the 2009 European Champion in

Straight Pool Dimitri Jungo was visibly thrilled

with the win of his second place, even though

– ambitious as always – he would have pre-

ferred to be standing at the very top of the

winners’ rostrum. The award was won by

the hurdler Marc Schneeberger and Christian

Stucki (Swiss wrestling) occupied 3rd place on

the podium.
