CASE1: Japanese vertical writing
Originated from Chinese old writing way, there are many books written vertically.
● Novels / Laws / Spines of the books
If you have to take care of the layout;
● IchitaroA Japanese product, of course good for Japanese manuscript paper (e.g. 400 character grid paper)
If you send the draft text to the professional editors;
● Hidemaru, or any other vertical writing support editorYour role is to provide the text, others will care the layout

CASE2: Horizontal writing
Horizontal writing way for Japanese or other languages;
● Microsoft Word
● Writer (LibreOffice / Apache OpenOffice)Since these are developed in the Eastern countries, they are suitable for the writing in English styles.
Horizontal writing with character based indent;
● IchitaroTo use the monospace based layout, which is typical way for Japanese bureaucrat style, Japanese product is suitable for this purpose.
● WriterYou can manually set the monospace indent

CASE3: Multiple language in a document
If you need to write a document that contains multiple language;
● Writer (LibreOffice / Apache OpenOffice)From the point of “internationalization” view, LibreOffice / Apache OpenOffice can be recommended.
“Localization” and “Internationalization” (or globalization)
● Localization : Translating the software into some local language
● Internationalization : Enable the software to handle multiple languages, e.g. you can write a report written in Japanese using English version of the software

CASE4: PC without any office suites
Say you have to start your work but the only PC you got has no office suites installed.
● LibreOffice Portable
Portable Apps
● Portable applications can be started from the USB memory, without any installation.
● If you bring USB memory with LibreOffice portable, you can use LibreOffice anywhere.
● Windows only.

About Nonprofit organization OOOUG
Nonprofit organization Oooug is a group of volunteers in Japan, promoting the OpenOffice.org successor and derivatives.。
● What is OpenOffice.org?The open-source office suite software developed to be free from any vendors.
● About derivativesThough OpenOffice.org project is discontinued, the derivatives such as LibreOffice and/or Apache OpenOffice succeed its purpose and continue developing.
What should be realized promoting the software?
● Provide the “choice” for the office suites
Make change to the situation (especially in Japan) that the only one high-cost vendor for the office suite.
● More environment to access to the documents.
Provide the interoperability among different office suites.
Mitigate the risk to lose your documents according to the one commercial enterprise policy changes (stop supporting access to the old files).
What we want to enlighten through the promotion
● Make users understand they have the “choice” even for the business required office suites, and get the ability to think what is the best way for them to accomplish the aims.
