DIEZ AÑOS CONSTRUYENDOLA ACUICULTURA DEL FUTURO

Esta innovadora apuesta chilena, nacida en medio de la peor crisis económica vivida por la salmonicultura, ya ha entregado soluciones de clase mundial a los principales desafíos que enfrenta la producción acuícola. Pero esto es solo el comienzo.

Toda actividad basada en la producción de proteínas animales debe ir mejorando consistentemente sus conocimientos y herramientas para proyectarse sustentablemente hacia el futuro. La industria del salmón y la tilapia, que desde sus inicios se ha visto enfrentada a la acción de patógenos, no está exenta de esta premisa.

Por lo anterior es que, a mediados de la década del 2000, Empresas AquaChile y la Universidad de Chile buscaron el apoyo de Corfo para darle vida a esta inédita iniciativa –basada en la genética y genómica– que entregaría a la industria acuícola modernas soluciones en el ámbito de la producción y sanidad de peces. TEN YEARS BUILDING AQUACULTURE OF THE FUTURE

Chile’s innovative gamble, born in the midst of salmon farming’s worst ever economic crisis, has already delivered world-class solutions to the major challenges facing fish production. But it is justthe beginning.

All activity based on the production of animal protein must continually improve its knowledge and tools to project itself sustainably into the future. The Salmon and Tilapia industries, which from the outset have seen confrontations by the actions of pathogens, are not exempt from this premise.

Due to the above, in the mid-2000’s, Empresas AquaChile and the Universidad de Chile sought the support of Corfo for an unprecedented initiative, based on genetics and genomics, to deliver modern solutions to fish production and health in the Aquaculture Industry. The venture, which considered an investment of US$ 10 million, took place in the city of Puerto Montt (Los Lagos Region) in early 2007, just as Chilean salmon farming began to experience a deep crisis caused by an outbreak of

UNA DÉCADA DE ÉXITOSTodos estos avances permitieron ir rompiendo diferentes paradigmas, como la validación de la metodología de selección aplicada en animales tradicionales (pollos, cerdos, vacunos de leche y carne) en salmónidos en Chile, y que nuestro país puede ser líder en esta área en acuicultura. De igual forma se fueron abriendo nuevas oportunidades, como formar personal técnico en el área de la Investigación y Desarrollo (I+D) aplicada a la acuicultura y el manejo/operación de PMG.

Cumplidos diez años de vida, Aquainnovo ha redoblado su apuesta para seguir entregando soluciones sustentables e innovadoras a la industria de Chile y el mundo. Por medio de la ciencia y personal altamente capacitado, este consorcio chileno continuará aportando al desarrollo de la acuicultura del futuro.

Los exitosos resultados alcanzados por Aquainnovo en sus diez años de vida, y que se han visto traducidos en ovas mejoradas genéticamente, desarrollo de Programas de Mejoramiento Genético (PMG) y herramientas biotecnológicas de diagnóstico, solo por nombrar algunos ejemplos, tuvieron como génesis una serie de desarrollos y esfuerzos anteriores que fueron claves.

PROGRAMAS GENÉTICOSA inicios de la década de 1990, el Instituto de Fomento Pesquero (IFOP) y la Universidad de Chile, a través de Roberto Neira, académico de la Facultad de Ciencias Agronómicas y especialista en genética, inician el primer Programa de Mejoramiento Genético (PMG) en salmón coho.

Con el correr del tiempo, Neira fue explorando con nuevas especies. Es así como inició el PMG para salmón Atlántico en 1997 y luego, en el 2000, comenzó el de truchas. En 2006, en tanto, se da comienzo al PMG de tilapias en la compañía Aqua Corporación Internacional (ACI), de Costa Rica.

A DECADE OF SUCCESSAll these advances pushed aside different paradigms, such as the validation of the selection methodology applied in traditional animals (chickens, pigs, milk and beef cattle) and salmonids in Chile. Equally, new opportunities were opened up, such as training technical personnel in the area of Research and Development (R&D) applied to aquaculture and the management / operation of GIPs.

After completing ten years, Aquainnovo has redoubled its commitment to continue delivering sustainable and innovative solutions to the industries of Chile and the world. Through science and highly trained personnel, this Chilean consortium will continue to contribute to the development of aquaculture for the future.

The successful results achieved by Aquainnovo in its ten years of existence, for example; genetically improved eggs, the development of Genetic Improvement Programs (GIP) or diagnostic biotechnological tools, were born out of a series of previous developments and efforts.

GENETIC PROGRAMSAt the beginning of the 1990s, Instituto de Fomento Pesquero (IFOP) and Universidad de Chile, through Roberto Neira, an academic of the Faculty of Agronomic Sciences and specialist in genetics, started the first Genetic Improvement Program (GIP) in Coho Salmon.

After time exploring with new species, Neira began a GIP for Atlantic Salmon and later in 2000 with Trout. In 2006, likewise, Aqua Corporación Internacional (ACI) began their GIP for Tilapia in Costa Rica.

Después de diez años de experiencia en manejo de PMGs, Empresas AquaChile decide dar un paso significativo en materia de genética y reproducción de peces al crear, en conjunto con la Universidad de Chile y gracias al patrocinio de la Corfo, Aquainnovo.

Desde sus comienzos, esta iniciativa inédita en Chile buscó ser una plataforma abierta para toda la industria. Sus objetivos son: generar una instancia que permita ofrecer servicios tecnológicos para la generación de PGMs, desarrollar herramientas genómicas para la selección por resistencia a enfermedades, crear un equipo de trabajo de primer nivel internacional y desarrollar infraestructurade punta.

OPPORTUNITIES DRAWN FROM THE CRISIS

After ten years of experience in GIP management, Empresas AquaChile decides to take a significant step in the field of genetics and reproduction of fish by creating, together with University de Chile and thanks to the sponsorship of Corfo, Aquainnovo.

Since its beginning, this initiative, unprecedented in Chile, has sought to be an open platform for the entire industry with the objectives of: creating an agency that can provide technological services for the generation of GIPs, developing genomic tools for disease resistance selection, creating a top international level work team and developingstate-of-the-art infrastructure.

INICIO DE LAINTERNACIONALIZACIÓN

Los representantes del centro de I+D comienzan a participar activamente en reuniones nacionales e internacionales con el objetivo de difundir el desarrollo de sus estrategias de mejoramiento genético y la generación de herramientas biotecnológicas en salmónidos y otras especies.

Por aquellos días, la salmonicultura chilena comenzaba a vivir la peor parte de la crisis del virus ISA y Aquainnovo respondía a los nuevos desafíos extendiendo las capacidades de su laboratorio hacia el área de diagnóstico del patógeno y permitiendo a la industria tomar mejores decisiones en el control dela enfermedad.

INTERNATIONALIZATION BEGINS

Representatives of the R&D centre begin actively participating in national and international meetings with the aim of disseminating the development of their genetic improvement strategies and the generation of biotechnological tools in salmonidsand other species.

During this time, Chilean salmon farming begins to live the worst part of the ISA virus crisis and Aquainnovo responds to the new challenges by extending the capabilities of its laboratory to the area of pathogen diagnosis, allowing the industry to make better decisions in the control of the disease.

In addition, Aquainnovo develops protocols of controlled challenges with Piscirikettsia salmonis (SRS) and Caligus rogercresseyi (Caligidosis) in Atlantic Salmon, in addition to supporting Empresas AquaChile PMGs (Coho and Atlantic Salmon, and Trout) and Aqua Corporation International (ACI) for Tilapia in Costa Rica.

THE YEAR OF THE GENOME

Chile joins the International Initiative for Sequencing the Atlantic Salmon Genome, which is led by the cGRASP (Consortium for Genomic Research on All Salmonids Program) also including Canada and Norway. Aquainnovo joins the Steering Committee of the project as a representative of the Chilean industry and participates energetically with its researchers in scientific activities.

In parallel, Aquainnovo is consolidated in the service of diagnosis of diseases, through its Molecular Biology Laboratory, and is enlisted on the Register of Research Centers. A highlight of 2009, is the generation a modern software for GIP planningand management.

Se inicia el programa de mejoramiento genético de tilapias de Produmar, en Guayaquil, Ecuador, con el soporte de Aquainnovo. Se extiende así el rangode acción de nuestra compañía, más allá delholding AquaChile.

Aquainnovo advises Produmar on its Tilapiabreeding and genetic program which begins in Guayaquil, Ecuador.

In addition, the world’s leading supplier of pig genetic products, Genus, is interested in entering into the aquaculture genetics supply business through the collaboration with Aquainnovo, which is extended for about three years.

During the year, and thanks to the awarding of two Corfo projects, advances are made in the development of genomic tools (SNP_Chip) for the implementation of genomic selection for resistance to SRS and Caligidosis and also the QTL for IPN resistance is implemented.

ADVANCES IN COHO SALMON

Thanks to the different advances made by Aquainnovo scientists, it is possible to increase the production of Coho Salmon through genetic improvement. In short, the species managed to reach commercialization size almost 30 days before those not on the program.

COMIENZALENCA

Después de 2 años de proyecto y construcción, en marzo se inician las operaciones del Centro Experimental de Lenca, en la Región de Los Lagos y dependiente de Aquainnovo. Se trata de una moderna construcción de 2.500 m2, emplazada en un terreno de 2,5 ha, que cuenta con cuatro salas para investigación y otra de cuarentena. El monto de inversión supera los US$10 millones.

Paralelamente, se incorporan herramientas bio-económicas que permiten modelar datos productivos y generar una plataforma de información para implementar una efectiva aproximación de benchmarking. De este modo, se logra validar más consistentemente los productos genéticos que generan los PMGs, vender mejor los servicios genéticos, además de costear y argumentar económicamente de una mejor forma las tecnologías generadas por Aquainnovo.

LENCA IS INAUGURATED

In March the operations of the Lenca Experimental Centre in the Los Lagos Region and dependent of Aquainnovo begin. It is a modern construction of 2,500 m2, located on 2.5 ha of land, which has four rooms for research and quarantine. The amount of investment exceeds US$ 10 million overall.

At the same time, bioeconomic tools are incorporated to model productive data and generate an information platform to implement an effective Benchmarking approach. In this way, it is possible to validate more consistently GIP produced genetic products, to sell the genetic services better and furthermore improve budgeting for technologies generated by Aquainnovo.

Comienzan las operaciones de Salmones Chaicas, piscicultura con sistemas de recirculación de aguas que permite manejar el stock de reproductores de salmón Atlántico de forma segura desde el punto de vista sanitario, ya que cuenta con sistemas de producción cerrados, con zonificación de áreas de acceso y producción y sectorización de unidades productivas. La idea de crear esta unidad, también situada en la Región de Los Lagos, surgió luego de la crisis del virus ISA, que evidenció la fragilidad en que operaba la industria desde el punto de vista dela bioseguridad.

Salmones Chaicas se construye sobre la base de cuatro pilares: producción, programa genético, bioseguridad y amigable con el medio ambiente.

Se puede destacar que Aquainnovo es el encargado de “entregar el knowhow del trabajo genético”,dice el Gerente General de Salmones Chaicas,Torben Petersen.

SALMONES CHAICAS JOINS

Start of Salmones Chaicas operations, fish farming with water recirculation systems that allow stock management of Atlantic salmon reproducers in a safe way from the sanitary point of view, from its new closed production systems, with access area zoning and production and sectorization of productive units. The idea behind creating this unit, also located in the Los Lagos Region, arose after the ISA virus crisis, which demonstrated the fragility in which the industry operated from a biosafety point of view.

Salmones Chaicas is built based on four pillars: Production, Genetic Programming, Biosafety and being Environmental friendly.

We can emphasize that Aquainnovo is in chargeof “delivering the know-how of the genetic work”,says the general manager of Salmones Chaicas,Torben Petersen.

Se terminan los proyectos de desarrollo de SNP_Chip y QTL-IPN. Las herramientas desarrolladas entran en proceso de implementación, donde operacionalmente se planifica y formaliza su uso a partir de 2016 - 2017.

GENOMIC TOOLS IMPLEMENTATION

Development projects for SNP_Chip and QTL-IPN are completed. The tools developed are entered into the process of implementation, where they are planned to be formalized and put into operation from 2016 - 2017.

Aquainnovo is invited to participate in the Canadian project EPIC4 (Enhancing Production in Coho: Culture, Community, Catch) in which, together with University de Chile, its researchers participate in the objectives of sequencing the Coho Salmon genome and genomic selection of economically important characteristics.

BioMar, la compañía danesa elaboradora de alimentos para la acuicultura, firmó un acuerdo para concretar la compra y utilización del 30% del centro de investigación Lenca. La entidad nacida de este acuerdo se denomina Aquaculture Technology Centre (ATC) Patagonia.

Matías del Campo, Gerente General de Aquainnovo comentó: “…Esta iniciativa fortalecerá el desarrollo tecnológico gracias a la sinergia de los conocimientos que ambas compañías aportarán y mejorará nuestra actual oferta de servicios de investigación por contrato, continuando con nuestras puertas abiertas para atender a los productores y proveedores de la industria acuícola global”.

En marzo se inician las operaciones del Centro Experimental de Lenca, en la Región de Los Lagos y dependiente de AquaInnovo. Se trata de una moderna construcción de 2.500 m2, que cuenta con cuatro salas para investigación y otrade cuarentena.

LENCA IS INAUGURATED

In March the operations of the Lenca Experimental Center in the Los Lagos Region and dependent of AquaInnovo begin. It is a modern construction of 2,500 m2 withfour research rooms and a quarantine room.
