Monkey BridgeConstructionBy William Hillcourt, National Director ofScoutcraft

The monkey-type of bridge has the advantage over theusual pioneering bridge that it can he used to span a muchgreater distance--up to one hundred feet.

Baden-Powell brought the idea from India. There he hadseen the natives in the Himalayan mountains make "bridgesout of three ropes . . . connected together so that one rope:forms the footpath and the others make the handrail on eachside." He drew a picture of such a bridge.

Lower portion of house sustains

major damage in traditional house

construction during flood situations

Page 21: DISASTER MITIGATION… A COMMUNITY BASED APPROACH Dhanada Mishra (civil Engineering KKIT) Peter Bakos (Association for India’s Development,Orissa) Sudarsan

Villagers prefer to live in their traditional houses, as they are better

suited to Indian climate and conditions, but they have a few draw backs being that they are constructed without foundations and damp course,

if we avail to them, low cost appropriate technology such as in-situ produced interlocking blocks for the

foundations and damp courses during the house reconstruction phase it will

enable them a house suited to the environment and resistant to flood

damage !!!
