Major exhibitions will be held around Europe this year to mark 125 years since the death of Dutch Post-Impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh. In January, the Beaux-Arts Mons (Mons Fine Arts Museum) in Belgium will showcase works he created during his time in the Borinage region. Fired up: New Year celebrations are held across Japan throughout January. Among the more unusual is the Tokyo Fire Department’s Dezome-shiki, with men clad as firemen of the Edo period (1603-1867) performing acrobatic stunts on ladders. In Osaka, the Toka Ebisu Festival at Imamiya Ebisu Shrine sees festivalgoers given gifts during the Good Luck Palanquin parade. In Nara, Mount Wakakusayama is set ablaze for the Yamayaki ceremony. Back on track: The final stretch of New York’s High Line is now open to the public. Once a derelict elevated freight rail line, the 2.3-kilometre walkway is now a popular green space that runs from Gansevoort Street in the Meatpacking District to West 34th Street. Features of the final stretch include 11th Avenue, the cityscape and the Hudson River.

Eye on the ball: The biggest football event in Asia – the finals of the AFC Asian Cup, held every four years – is hosted in Australia for the first time. The region’s top 16 teams will battle it out on the pitch, with the winners automatically qualifying for the FIFA Confederations Cup. The tournament kicks off in Melbourne and matches will also be played in Sydney, Canberra, Brisbane and Newcastle. 9 to 31 January
