  Sunday school classes (CCD) start at 8-45 a.m. and Our Youth group classes begin at 11. am.

The second collection this week will be for the Propagation of Faith.

Rest in peace: Mrs. Jean Mitchell, our long time parishioner and mother of Mrs. Michelle Cook, was called for her eternal reward. Her funeral services will be officiated by Mgr. Wall on October 22nd Monday at 11 am at the Pine Crest Cemetery chapel. Please pray for the eternal repose of her soul and for her family.

Bazaar Raffle Tickets for the Ladies Sodality Christmas Bazaar, which will be held on Saturday November 8, are on the glass table. Please take your envelope and return all sold ticket stubs and money prior to the bazaar. Please bring articles for the bazaar preferably this week itself so that the Ladies Sodality members may get enough time to place price tags on them.

Ministers of the Mass schedules are out for October. Please pick one up if you are scheduled.

number of the participants of the Saturday Vigil Mass & Sunday Masses in the month of October. Sr. Maria Bernarda, Fr. Tony’s oldest sister (81) requests your prayers for her as she is diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer, spread to the lungs. She has completed 50 years as a Holy Cross Sister and 45 years as principal and nursing teacher in three nursing schools in the south, central and north of India. Fr. Tony and all his other seven siblings, three in-laws participated in her Golden Jubilee celebrations, 1400 miles away from home, on Sunday, October 12th.

Fr. Tony will be on vacation from Oct 7th

to November 6th. Monsignor Kenneth Klepec will offer the Saturday and Sunday Masses and Deacon Billy will officiate the Billy Graham will officiate the weekday Communion services and Wednesday Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. In cases of pastoral emergency, Fr. Bill Nguyen of St. Margaret’s, Bayou La Batre will be available.

October- the month of the rosary: You are requested to say the rosary prayer every day of October and offer it for your dear ones, for the parish community and for the intentions of the Holy Father.

We need volunteer- grass cutters for this week as the grass grew faster due to rain.

RCIA Classes began on Saturday September 13th, 2014 at 10 am in the parish hall. If you would like to learn more about your faith or if you know anyone who is interested in learning about Catholicism and/or joining the Church call Father Tony or Deacon Billy Graham to sign up. If the schedule does not work for you please contact the office and see if we can work out a schedule that will work for you.

Confirmation Preparation classes: All students entering into the 9th, 10th or 11th grade and who have not received confirmation are requested to be present for the Confirmation Preparation class by Deacon Graham at 8-45 am every Sunday in the Education Building. Bingo is held every Wednesday at St. Margaret’s parish hall at 6:30p.m. Doors open at 6:00 and there is a concession which includes hotdogs, potato chips,, sweets, soft drinks, and water.

The Catholic Youth Organization of the Archdiocese of Mobile invites any of our CCD students who are interested in participating in sports to join the CYO.  They offer many sports for students in grades 2 through 8.  In the fall they offer football, soccer,

volleyball, cheer leading, & tennis. Students will be placed on teams that are convenient to the Grand Bay area.  If you have any questions please feel free to contact Paul Knapstein, Director for the CYO for our area.

The Intercessors for Priests in the Heart of St. Joseph is a new Confraternity that seeks to support all priests by praying for them through the powerful intercession of St. Joseph, the spiritual father of all priests.   Our Food Bank is really running low on food. The Knights of Columbus is sponsoring a year round food drive to help feed those in need. Catholic Charities requests your generous food contributions. Besides, Fr Tony always has request from people in need for food.  We request everyone to bring in food items that can be turned into a meal for up to 4 people.  If you prefer to give money you can just leave it in an envelope in the collection basket with “For Food Bank” written on it and we will know that it is meant for our parish food bank.

Items for Soldier’s Needs: Please don’t forget to bring items for soldiers’ needs: Shaving cream, disposable razors, solid deodorant, bars of soap/body wash, anti-bacteria cleaner, shampoo, tooth paste, dental floss, personal handy-wipes, personal hygiene items for women, foot powder, insect repellent, flea collars (they put them around their ankles), chopstick, athlete’s foot powder/spray, sun block lotion, sun shades, protective safety dust masks, socks, sweat headbands, batteries (AAA, AA, C), DVD movies, cards, writing tablets, paper, pens, envelopes, reading materials, snacks: cookies, gum, crest, life-savers, mints, pudding, crackers, sardines, chicken, tuna, salmon, jerky, peppermints, kool-aid, gatorade, tea/coffee. Put items in the designated box in the Parish Hall.

  Help us keep flowers at the altarThe slotted wooden box on the glass table in the Parish Hall will receive donations for flowers. If you wish to give flowers for a specific remembrance or thanksgiving there is a sign-up flower chart on the wall to the left of the front doors.

Introduction: The common theme of today’s readings is the nature of our obligations to God and to our country. The readings show us how, with God’s help, we can be ideal citizens of both earth and heaven. 

Scripture lessons: In the first reading, Isaiah the prophet foretells how, indirectly, the policies of the great Persian Emperor Cyrus will help   God's saving plan for His chosen people.  Today’s responsorial Psalm reminds us that when people put God's Kingdom first, everyone benefits.  In the second reading, Paul praises his converts in Thessalonica for their fidelity to God and to Christ His Son, “our Lord Jesus Christ,” and their practice of the theological virtues of Faith, Hope and Charity with the help of the Holy Spirit. In the Gospel, Jesus escapes from the trap in the

question, “Is it lawful to pay the census tax to Caesar or not?” by stating “Repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God.” With this answer, Jesus reminds his questioners that if they are so concerned and careful about paying taxes to the state, they should be much more concerned and careful about their service to God and their obligations to Him as their Creator and Lord. We fulfill our duties to our country by loyally obeying the just laws of the State and working for the welfare of all citizens. We become Heavenly citizens by obeying God’s laws.

Life messages: 1) “Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s”: How?  It is the duty of Christians to pay for the services and the privileges that government provides, like paved roads, police and fire departments, banks, schools and other necessities.  If we refuse to pay taxes, how will these needs be fulfilled?  Another way of giving to Caesar what is Caesar’s is to participate actively in the running of the government, electing the most suitable candidates and influencing them through frequent contacts.  Third, we must submit to the civil authorities and respect the laws of our country in order to live in peace.  As loyal citizens we must also see to it that our elected representatives are faithful in maintaining law and order in the country and in promoting the welfare of its citizens without violating God’s laws. 

2) “Give to God what is God’s.” How?  Since everything is God’s, we must give ourselves to Him 100%, not just 10% on Sundays.  We should be generous

in fulfilling our Sunday obligations and find time every day for prayer and worship in the family, for the reading of the Bible and the proper training of our children in Faith and morals.   We will soon be invited to make the stewardship pledge of our financial offering to the local Church for the coming year.  Our contribution to the parish church   should be an expression of our gratitude to God, giving back to God all that He has given us.  Active participation in the various ministries of the parish is an offering to God of our time and talents, yet another way of giving to God His due, our whole self.  

 

Why doesn’t the Catholic Church ordain women? : Rejecting patriarchy in the Church, Pope Benedict XVI said that the Church has no power to ordain women as priests.” The Church has ‘no authority’ to ordain women. The point is not that we don’t want to, but that we can’t,” the pope said in his latest book “Light of the World: The Pope, the Church and the Signs of the Times.” He said Christ gave the form of priesthood when he chose his male Apostles and the “man does not have the power to change it.” There is no discrimination against women in the Church because women perform so many meaningful functions in the Church and shape its image more than

men do. Catholic women have played a central role in the life of the Church, from Lydia in the Acts of the Apostles, through Margaret of Scotland and Jadwiga of Poland and other great queens and women of influence, to the Englishwomen at the Reformation who arranged secret places for Mass, down to Edith Stein, whose quest for intellectual and spiritual truth led her to convent life and did not spare her at Auschwitz. The pope also rejected the notion that ordination was restricted to men only because priestesses would have been unthinkable 2,000 years ago. “That is nonsense. Virtually all the pagan religions of Jesus’ day had priestesses, and it would have been entirely normal and natural for him to choose women for this task. Besides, Jesus had a number of excellent potential candidates, like his own mother, who accompanied him at his first miracle and stood with him as he suffered on the cross, Mary Magdalene, and Martha and Mary of Bethany. Instead, Jesus chose only men, and he remained immovable on this, continuing right to the end to exhort and train them all, leaving thus a Church which turned out to be safely founded on a rock. From those twelve men a direct line of apostolic succession has given the Catholic Church the bishops and priests it has today. The Catechism of the Catholic Church sets it out clearly: “Only a baptized man (vir) receives sacred ordination. The Lord Jesus chose men (viri) to form the college of the twelve apostles, and the apostles did the same when they chose collaborators to succeed them in their ministry.”
