It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to Healy Park for the Donnelly Vauxhall Senior Championship Final replay and the O’Neill’s Minor Hurling Championship Final 2016.

What can you say about last Sunday? We were treated to 2 superb games and all 4 teams should be applauded for their efforts. Comhghairdeas to Pomeroy who claimed the Donnelly Vauxhall Intermediate Championship with a 3-12 to 1-12 win over a Derrylaughan side that fought right to the end. I wish Pomeroy all the best as they return to Healy Park in two weeks to begin their Ulster Championship campaign against the Cavan Champions.

After an enthralling contest last week, Coalisland and Killyclogher return to do it all again. In a year of close contests and high quality football in the County Championship, it was somewhat fitting that that our showcase affair ended in a draw and that gaels all over the country were able to enjoy it on TG4. I wish both Niall McFadden and Philip Toner a speedy recovery after having their final’s cut short last week.

Also today we have the Minor Hurlers of Éire Og and Eoghan Ruadh doing battle in their Championship Final. Many of this particular crop of Minor Hurlers have made their own piece of history for the County after claiming a Minor C All Ireland title in 2015 and competing in the ‘A’ section of the Ulster League this year with the traditional big guns of Ulster Hurling. Like all Eoghan Ruadh v Éire Og County Finals, you should expect a high intensity and high quality battle.

It would be remiss of me not to wish our Junior Champions Rock the best of luck as they commence their Ulster Championship campaign today against Con Magee’s today in O’Neill Park.

I would also like to welcome to Healy Park the referees for today’s games, Fergal Ward and Aidan Graham along with their linesmen and umpires who are all an integral part of County Finals day. Today is a big day for them too, and I wish all involved in both games well.

As always, Coisti Contae Tir Eoghain continue to be deeply indebted to our administrators, gatemen, stewards, officers and grounds staff for their dedication and display of the voluntary ethos that runs right through our Association.

I am pleased to welcome our Championship sponsors Donnelly Vauxhall represented today by Terence Donnelly. I thank them for their support. I welcome representatives from Mc Aleer & Rushe, O’Neills, Bank Of Ireland and Deep River Rock and thank them all for their continued support. It is important you all support your

Club and our County sponsors as often as you can.

The mini-games are played by the children selected from the competing clubs Coalisland, Killyclogher, Eoghan Ruadh and Eire Og. Please show your appreciation to the children, our stars of the future.

Match programmes have been part of all our Championship matches and Underage Finals this year. Congratulations to Eunan and our Communications committee on last week’s bumper programme and another fine effort here today.

Today our entertainment is the Loughmacrory Accordian Band, Paistí Na Fingréine, who have become an integral part of County Final day, Both Domhnaigh instrumental music group who return this week & Scór na nOg Champion Niamh McCrystal singing the National Anthem. I congratulate our current Cultural Officer Cliodhna Kerr and her Culture Committee on their work.

WELCOME

LOUGHMACRORY ACCORDION BAND Loughmacrory Accordion Band, Páistí Ná Fingréine, was formed in the early 1970’s and is named after the largest lough in the Loughmacrory area, Lough Fingrean.

The band was very active for over a decade and re-grouped again in 1987 for the official opening of St Mary’s Chapel in Loughmacrory. They spent the following 4 years ‘on the march’ around Fleadheanna, parades, sports days and competitions and were then largely inactive until 2009 when they re-formed to celebrate the 125th anniversary of Cumann Luthchleas Gael.

The band played again at the official opening of the new sport and community facilities in Loughmacrory in June 2014.

CULTURE

SCÓR FACTOR

However, a major highlight was participating in this years New York St Patrick’s Day parade as guests of the Tyrone Society New York. This was a momentous trip and has made the band members even more determined to organise and plan for for the future.

AMHRÁN NA BHFIANN

The national anthem is being sung today by Niamh McCrystal from the Donaghmore St. Patrick’s club, our current Scór na nÓg Solo Singing Champion. We are proud in Tyrone that all singers of the National Anthem are aware that the piece was written as a marching song and deliver it so. We encourage all spectators to join in singing this proud song.

TODAY’S MUSIC ENTERTAINERS

Today’s musicians from Both Domhnaigh are four young players from two families. The McBride’s from Glenelly and the Scallon’s from Gortin, all coming together to form the Both Domhnaigh Scór group.

Cormac McBride on fiddle is presently attending Acadamh Thír Eoghain while playing for Both Domhnaigh at U16 and Minor level and Omagh CBS.

RóiseMae McBride plays accordion and flute and has Tyrone titles in both instruments and played in her first All-Ireland this year on flute in Ennis. RóiseMae is also the current fullback for Glenelly U16’s.

Bronách Scallon playing Bodhran today is also a beautiful flute and harp player. Bronách’s main instrument is her singing voice.

Dearbhla Scallon is known all over the Country for her beautiful singing voice, and was over the moon to have Won an All-Ireland title in 2015 for her English singing.

12 TYRONE SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL REPLAY 2016

The footballers of Killyclogher St Mary’s and Coalisland Na Fianna return here today to Healy Park Omagh in order to decide the destination of the 2016 Donnelly Vauxhall Tyrone Senior Football Championship title following last week’s thrilling stalemate.

The initial encounter was very keenly contested with both sides deserving of huge praise in what was a fine advertisement for Tyrone football which went out far and wide owing to the live television coverage that was provided by TG4 that allowed many others to witness what is always an intense Championship.

Barring another draw the destination of the 2016 O’Neill Cup should be known later this

afternoon. The last Tyrone Senior Football Championship final to go to a replay was ten years ago in 2006 when Errigal Ciarán and Carrickmore ended all square with the Errigal men running out winners at the second time of asking just like they had done back in 2000 against the very same opposition.

Draws in Tyrone Senior Championship finals are nothing new with the first ever draw coming away back in 1906 when Strabane Fág-an-Bealach defeated Donaghmore Éire Óg. The first game was played in Strabane in February 1906 with the game finishing level and was replayed in Donaghmore on a St Patrick’s Day but once again the sides couldn’t be separated so lo and behold

AODHÁN HARKIN

it took a third game on Easter Monday (16th April) to decide the destination of the second ever Tyrone Senior Championship title. Strabane won the third encounter on a score line of 1-4 to 0-4 to compensate for their defeat against Coalisland in the inaugural Championship decider in 1904-05.

Several other finals have gone to replays over the years with the likes of Trillick, Ardboe, Clonoe, Cookstown and Carrickmore all gaining the upper hand on the second occasion so the management and players of Killyclogher and Coalisland will be hoping to do likewise this afternoon.

Last Sundays drawn decider was an entertaining game of football

and both sets of players are to be applauded for their efforts. Each and every player gave their all over the hour and a bit played, sadly a couple of players picked up bad injuries in that encounter and like everyone else I wish them all a very speedy recovery.

I’m quite sure that both sides will once again give their all in today’s replay with the eventual winners set to return to Healy Park on Sunday 30th October for an Ulster Senior Championship opener to face the Antrim Champions St Gall’s or Cargin who will battle it out at

Corrigan Park Belfast today also in their County decider.

Will it be Marty Swift (Killyclogher) or Niall Kerr (Coalisland) that will climb the steps of Healy Park to receive the O’Neill Cup from County Chairperson Roisin Jordan later this afternoon? Your guess is as good as mine, I do know however that if it’s as half as good a game as last weekend’s clash then we are in for another fine game and judging by the balance of play in that game then another exciting and close encounter lies in store.

TYRONE SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL REPLAY 2016 13

Ádh mór to both sides here today and indeed to referee Fergal Ward (Errigal Ciarán). Fergal becomes the first man from the club nowadays known as Errigal Ciarán to take charge of a Tyrone Senior Championship decider although Eamon Mullan (Ballygawley) was in the middle for four finals his last decider being a replayed clash also which featured Ardboe and Trillick back in 1987 which the men from the Lough Shore won.

LAST SUNDAYS DRAWN DECIDER WAS AN ENTERTAINING GAME OF FOOTBALL AND BOTH SETS OF PLAYERS ARE TO BE APPLAUDED FOR THEIR EFFORTS.

shot selection is quite good but in that period we seemed to rush things and didn’t show our normal composure. Yet, to their credit, they never dropped the heads and still created the chances and took them but it’s an aspect of our game that we have to look at.”

The drawn game was a real test of character for Killyclogher, they conceded a goal and had Gary Wallace sent off all in the space of minutes but Corrigan was happy at the way his team responded. “It was a set back, we were in a good place at the time but again the boys kept their head and responded well, we will need that resolve again next time out.”

Niall McFadden was withdrawn in the opening minutes after suffering an injury and of course Coalisland’s

“Again the boys kept their head and responded well”.

“It was a bit like what Dublin manager Jim Galvin said after a drawn All-Ireland final, we could have won it but we didn’t deserve to win it, but I felt both teams could be saying the same. We both could have won it but I think a draw was a fair result”.

Killyclogher’s Dom Corrigan was in a reflective mood as he left Healy Park last Sunday evening. No disappointment or relief, just the realisation that there is more to be done in the replay.

The Fermanagh man was clear that there needed to be an improvement to his sides shooting, they may have hit sixteen points but also were guilty of ten scoreable wides“Worrying, normally we are economical with our shots and our

Phillip Toner also suffered a nasty injury, “It was a sickening injury for young Toner, you hate to see that happening and we wish him well. Niall will be in a race against time to be back while Dermot Carlin also has an extra week now, he will do everything he can to be available, he would give us something extra.”

Dominic Corrigan left Healy Park with coach John McElholm and his management teak with a steely determination in the camp ahead of take two.

impression, we wish Philly all the best he has been some player for us this season.”

The Antrim man paid tribute to Killyclogher after what was a hugely entertaining tie. “Credit to them they got the break and the equaliser and sure we have to do it all again. There’s nothing between the teams and it will be the team with the biggest heart that will get up the steps to get their hands on the cup.”

McKeever’s side turned in some fine passages of play, the goal looked to have swung it their way. “I thought we could have pushed on but as I said fair play to Killyclogher they showed some quality there and it will be a great replay.”

“I thought we could have pushed on.”

“When we reached injury time and were a point up you were just dreaming of the final whistle, it couldn’t come quick enough. In the end it didn’t and we are back again for a replay.”

There was no doubting that John McKeever’s mind was elsewhere, obviously despite the draw his mind was on other things, it was clear that the thoughts of both players and management were with the injured Philip Toner, “We’re not sure just how bad he is, it was so sickening to see him carried off, we only hope it’s not too serious. It’s hard for the players around them after that but fair play they stepped up, we have a good bench and Peter (McGahan) that came on for him made a big

Sunday will see the Fianna out now four weeks on the bounce but that’s not a worry for the manager.“It won’t be an issue, we have as I said a very strong bench, we have players who can come in, maybe start, so we will regroup, I’m already looking forward to the replay”.

Like Killyclogher, no panic, no disappointment, just a refocus.

31TYRONE SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL REPLAY 2016

Prior to the drawn game, it looked like the Patsy Forbes cup was heading to Clonoe’s Dan McNulty. His tally of 3-18 (27) would have seemed to be too much to ask for the players on show in the final. However, one week on and two players from the competing clubs are now within striking distance.

Killyclogher’s Mark Bradley put himself into contention with his 0-6 return in the drawn game and currently sits on 0-22 while Dermot Thornton added 0-2 in the drawn game and his total of 2-17 (23) makes him a real challenger. While the O’Neill Cup is both men’s primary focus, it all points to a potential shoot out now between the talisman forwards.

Connor McAliskey and Kevin McCabe, Tyrone’s first All-Star and honoured last Sunday as part of the Clonoe 25 year jubilee team, were previous O’Rahilly winners of

Intermediate Championship:

Last weekend saw the conclusion of the Intermediate football championship, with Pomeroy sealing the title with a 3-12 to 1-12 win over Derrylaughan. Tyrone Under 21 captain for 2016 Frank Burns turned in a man of the match performance, scoring 1-6 which was enough to overtake Aghaloo’s Niall McElroy to top the score tally for the campaign.

Ciaran Quinn and Ciaran Gervin were on target for Derrylaughan to move

Tyrone 2016 Junior + Intermediate Championships 2016

the top scorer award. Leo Meenan’s 2-20 in 2003 gave him Killyclogher’s sole honour to date while a brace of wins from Paddy McShane in 89 and 90 brought the coveted prize to Coalisland.

“Big Dan”, the late score getter this term for the O’Rahilly’s, could well see the honour slip away thanks to last week’s high scoring draw but it adds to the excitement as we gather again here at Healy Park.

Junior Championship:

Rock Full Forward Aidan McGarrity scored 1-6 in the Junior Final against Tattyreagh and that saw him overtake

Cathal McShane’s 2-17 to lead the scoring tally at the end of the championship campaign.

Interesting to note that five of the top six on the top scorers list are all involved with teams still in the search for promotion from the league.

TYRONE SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL REPLAY 2016 33

DRR Tyrone GAA A5 Advert.pdf 9/25/14 10:25:43 AM

The excellent County Finals of the last two weeks are testament to our clubs hard work in developing quality games for all playing members. In addition to the onfield promotion of Gaelic Games, clubs are now recognising the impact of some of their activities on the health and wellbeing of their communities and vice versa, the impact health and wellbeing is having on their clubs.

30 Clubs in Tír Eoghain now have a nominated Health and Wellbeing Officer and it is the County’s aim to increase that number through the club AGM’s this winter. Indeed, Tyrone has 3 trained health and wellbeing officer tutors who, with the county health and wellbeing committee, can provide support and advice to any club/officer who may require it.

2 Clubs from Tír Eoghain; Omagh St. Enda’s and An Caisleán Glas Cumann Naoimh Padraig were successful in their applications to participate in the GAA National Healthy Club programme, joining over 50 successful clubs across the Association. These clubs are now part of an All-Ireland network of clubs that are sharing good practice and learning how to put in place practical programmes for the benefit of their clubs and communities.

Omagh St. Enda’s and An Caisleán Glas Cumann Naoimh Padraig are not the only clubs who are active in this area. We have been very fortunate to have had many other

clubs who have developed some brilliant initiatives and deserve recognition in

doing so. Moortown and Drumragh have both organised successful ‘Live to Play’ events to promote safety on our roads, Augher has received recognition for its work in community gardening, and continually promote the Samaritan’s helpline number, Strabane has promoted the ‘Darkness to Light’ walk and promoted Cancer Awareness campaigns. These are just a few examples of the great work that is currently happening. We would ask any club who has or is planning programmes to email [email protected] and the County HWC will help promote your event.

As part of the County Health and Wellbeing Action Plan a workshop event has been planned for Wednesday 26th October @ 7pm in Garvaghey to look at the issue of addiction.

The event will provide club officials from throughout the county with essential information on recognising the signs of problem gambling and importantly how to signpost individuals to the appropriate help/support.

Invited speakers from a number of agencies will provide details of services available.

A representative from the Dunlewey Centre will outline the specialist services it provides locally. The centre offers a free and confidential counselling and mentoring programme for those experiencing difficulties with their own, or other people’s substance misuse or gambling issues.

Tír Eoghain Children’s Officer Adrian Nugent and the GAA’s National Health and Wellbeing Committee Cathaoirleah, Ciaran McLaughlin, will also address the event, and those in attendance will have an opportunity to network and to share ideas.

Ciaran McLaughlin said: “The National Health and Well-Being Committee are aware that gambling and other addictions are a growing concern in our communities and one which, inevitably, affects a significant number of GAA players and clubs.

“A number of well-known GAA players have had the courage to speak about their personal struggles in dealing with their gambling problem. We as a GAA family need to be aware of how to identify problem gambling and in encourage those in difficulty to seek assistance.”

The seminar will be opened by Tír Eoghain GAA Cathaoirleah Roisin Jordan, who commented “Clubs have been consulted on what health and wellbeing issues they would like support with, addiction was an area they asked for more information/advice on. The workshop on the 26th October will provide important information to clubs/coaches/members on how to identify signs of problem gambling and importantly signpost individuals to the appropriate help/support. We all have a role to play in this and Tír Eoghain GAA is supporting this work as part of its health and wellbeing work”.

To register a place at the workshop email: [email protected].

During 2016 Tyrone GAA further progressed a process that started in 2014 and was firmed up in 2015. That process involved the significant reshaping of how we take forward the development of our talented young players. The result is a new, more rounded Acadamh Thír Eoghain, which works with each player in the inter-linked contexts in which he lives his life – home/family, school/college, Club, career path and personal needs and ambitions.

The job is to help our young players grow and develop as people as well as players. Crucially it’s about developing them as Club as well as County players. Over 100 Tyrone GAA volunteers – including a ‘full team’ of 15 All-Ireland Senior medal holders – are helping to deliver all this.

Tyrone GAA youth development and is therefore dedicated to securing Tyrone’s GAA future. DRAGAIN THÍR EOGHAIN

To underpin these priceless human resources, Club Tyrone has in turn devised the ‘Dragain Thír Eoghain’ (Tyrone Dragons) initiative. In the wider business world Dragons are people who invest in good ideas which they believe will give them a good return. Our Dragons are people who invest in Acadamh Thír Eoghain because they believe it’s a good idea that will give a good return to our County and its people, and particularly our young people. Dragain Thír Eoghain commit to support Acadamh Thír Eoghain in a traditional Club Tyrone planned-giving way, by gifting £5,000 to this very rewarding work, usually over five years. Dragain money is unequivocally ring-fenced for
