Following the fi rst congress, which took place in June 2010 under the motto ‘Architecture: More for Less,’ the second, held in June 2012 under the theme ‘Architecture: the Common,’ and the third, celebrated in June 2014 under the title ‘Necessary Architecture,’ always at the Baluarte Center of Pamplona, the fourth congress of the Fundación Arquitectura y Sociedad has been convened in the Navarrese capital to address the ‘Change of Climate’ in architecture, a fi eld undergoing a deep transformation as the urgencies posed by climate change call for a rethinking of how to make buildings and cities: architecture changes to change the world.

The initial congress was attended by Renzo Piano, Jacques Herzog, and Glenn Murcutt, three holders of the Pritzker, architecture’s Nobel, along with Harvard’s and Columbia’s architecture school deans, the philosopher Slavoj Zizek, and others from fi ve continents. The second encounter brought in three other Pritzker laureates – Norman Foster to open the symposium and two Iberian masters, Rafael Moneo and Eduardo Souto de Moura, to close it – to head a distinguished cast of international architects. The third, like its predecessors, put veteran fi gures like Dominique Perrault side by side with architects with shorter but equally brilliant careers, and ended with the presence of the fi rst Iberian ever to receive the Pritzker, Álvaro Siza.

The fi rst three congresses proposed tools for dealing with our lingering crisis; the fourth endeavors to throw light on the need for change in architectural attitudes if our environment and the lives of people are to improve. To this end we again bring together world architects and fi gures of different countries known to combine professional excellence with attention to sustainability and architecture’s social dimension. The title of this year’s congress refers as much to the change of climate taking place in architecture, which the crisis has put at an economic and ethical crossroads, as to the importance of architecture and planning when facing the challenges posed by climate change, perhaps the most pressing matter of our time.

If the fi rst congress (‘More for Less’) advocated austerity, the second (‘The Common’) called for solidarity based on what we share, and the third (‘Necessary Architecture’) denounced the superfl uous in favor of the indispensable – “The necessary, but no less than the necessary” –, this fourth congress seeks to examine the current situation of architecture by simultaneously addressing the ongoing transformation of its academic and professional base, which perhaps signals a change of paradigm in how it is understood and practiced, and the relevant role that construction and the city play in climate change, given that most of the energy we consume and most of the carbon dioxide we release in the burning of fossil fuels ultimately comes from the way buildings are conceived and territories are occupied: architecture needs a change of climate, and climate change needs to be tackled from the angle of architecture.

Rem Koolhaas (Rotterdam, 1944) founded OMA in 1975 together with Elia and Zoe Zenghelis and Madelon Vriesendorp. He graduated from the Architectural Association in London and in 1978 published Delirious New York: A Retroactive Manifesto for Manhattan. In 1995, his book S,M,L,XL summarized the work of OMA in “a novel about architecture.” He heads the work of both OMA and AMO, the research branch of OMA, operating in areas beyond the realm of architecture. Koolhaas is a professor at the Harvard GSD since 2000, and his list of works includes buildings like the Villa dall’Ava in Paris (1991), the Seattle Public Library (2004), and the Fondazione Prada in Milan (2015). He received the Pritzker Prize in 2000, the Praemium Imperiale in 2003, the RIBA Gold Medal in 2004, and the Mies van der Rohe Award in 2005. In 2014 he was the director of the 14th International Architecture Exhibition of the Venice Biennale, entitled ‘Fundamentals.’

Pierre de Meuron (Basel, 1950) established Herzog & de Meuron with Jacques Herzog in 1978 in Basel. While many of Herzog & de Meuron’s projects are highly recognized public facilities, such as the National Stadium for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing and the conversion of the Bankside power plant into Tate Modern in London (2000), they have also completed distinguished private projects such as the Dominus Winery in Napa Valley, California (1998). De Meuron studied architecture at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH) from 1970 to 1975 with Aldo Rossi and Dolf Schnebli. He is a visiting professor at the Harvard GSD since 1994 (and in 1989), and a professor at the ETHZ since 1999, where in 2002 he co-founded the ETH Studio Basel–Contemporary City Institute in 2002. The practice has been awarded numerous prizes including the Pritzker Prize in 2001 and the RIBA Gold Medal in 2007.

Kjetil Trædal Thorsen (Haugesund, 1958) spent most of his childhood on the coastal island of Karmøy. Before finishing his secondary education in Norway he lived two years in Sunningdale, England, where he completed his art O-level a year early. At this time he decided he wanted to study architecture. Immediately after finishing the Gymnasium at Karmøy he moved to Graz, Aus-tria, to study architecture, and completed his Dipl.Ing of Architecture in 1985. This same year he moved to Oslo and started his first private architecture practice. In 1987 he co-founded Snøhetta Architecture and Landscape and also Norway’s first architectural gallery, Galleri ROM. Since the creation of Snøhetta he has been a driving partner, instrumental in defining and developing the philosophy and architectural ambition of a firm that has completed prominent works like the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (2002), the Olso Opera House (2008), and the SFMoMA extension (2016).

Jean-Philippe Vassal (Casablanca, 1954) graduated from the Bordeaux School of Architecture in 1980, and worked as urban planner in Niger (West Africa) from that year until 1985. In 1989 he established with Anne Lacaton the firm Lacaton & Vassal in Paris. He combines his work at the studio with academic responsibilities as professor at the Universität der Kunste (UdK) in Berlin since 2012. He has also been visiting professor at the Technische Universität (TU) in Berlin (2007-2011), the Peter Behrens School of Architecture in Düsseldorf (2005), the EPF of Lausanne (2010-2011), and the Pavillon Neuflize OBC-Palais de Tokyo, Paris (2013-2014). Lacaton & Vassal have completed works like the Latapie House in Floirac-Bordeaux (1993), the School of Architecture in Nantes (2008), and the FRAC Nord Pas de Calais in Dunkerque (2013), and received noteworthy distinctions such as the Grand Prix National d’Architecture in 2008.

Iñaki Ábalos (San Sebastián, 1956) and Renata Sentkiewicz (Kolo, 1972) are founding members and directors since 2006 of the international architecture studio Ábalos + Sentkiewicz (AS+), with offices in Madrid, Cambridge (USA) and Shanghai. They have taught at prominent inter-national universities like the Harvard Graduate School of Design, the Architectural Association, Columbia, Cornell, Princeton and the ETSAM, combining economic, professional, and research activities. Iñaki Ábalos is currently Chaired Professor at the ETSAM in Spain, and Professor in Residence and Chair of the Department of Architecture at the Harvard Graduate School of Design; and Renata Sentkiewicz is Design Critic at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. Among their built works are the Fundación Tàpies in Barcelona (2010), the Train Station of Logroño, and the Solar Tower in Valencia, the latter two completed in 2012.

Louisa Hutton (Norwich, 1957) is an architect and co-founded Sauerbruch Hutton in 1989. The studio has completed noteworthy works such as the GSW Headquarters in Berlin (1999), the Federal Environmental Agency in Dessau (2005), the Brandhorst Museum in Munich (2009), the KfW Headquarters in Frankfurt (2010) and Immanuel Church in Cologne (2013). Besides her practicing work, Louisa Hutton has taught at the Architectural Association and was a visiting professor at Harvard Graduate School of Design. She is also a Honorary Fellow of the American Institute of Architects and a Royal Academician of Arts. Among many recognitions, Louisa Hutton and Matthias Sauerbruch have received the International Honour Award for Sustainable Archi-tecture in 2010, the Energy Performance + Architecture Award in 2012, the Gottfried Semper Architekturpreis in 2013 and the German Architecture Award 2015 for the Immanuel Church.

Dietmar Eberle (Hittisau, 1952) graduated from TU-Wien (Vienna University of Technology) in Austria. Co-founder of the Baukünstler design movement in Vorarlberg (1979), with Carlo Baumschlager he established the firm Baumschlager Eberle in 1985 in Lochau (Austria), since then expanded with offices in Switzerland, Germany, France, China, and Vietnam. Eberle has held teaching posts at the Technical University of Hannover, the Vienna University of Technol-ogy, the University of Art and Design of Linz, the ETH Zurich, Syracuse University in New York, and Darmstadt Technical University. Professor of Architecture at the ETH Zurich, he was dean of its Faculty of Architecture from 2003 to 2005. Baumschlager Eberle has completed prominent works like the HIT Building at ETH Zurich (2008), Check-in 3 at Vienna International Airport (2012), and the Office building in Lustenau (2015), to name just a few.

Winy Maas (Schijndel, 1959) is one of the co-founding directors of the architecture and urban planning firm MVRDV, based in Rotterdam and known for projects such as the Dutch Pavilion at Expo Hannover 2000, the Silodam in Amsterdam (2003), the Glass Farm in Schijndel (2013), and the Markthal in Rotterdam (2014). He is also professor at and director of The Why Factory, a re-search institute for the future city which he founded in 2008 at TU Delft. Since 2013 he is Visiting Professor at the University of Hong Kong, and before that he was professor at the ETH Zurich, the Berlage Institute, MIT, Ohio State, and Yale University. Maas curates exhibitions, lectures through-out the world and takes part in international juries. He has received the Order of the Dutch Lion from the Netherlands Government and has been made a Chevalier de la Légion D’honneur by the French Government for his contributions to the fields of architecture and urbanism.

Bjarke Ingels (Copenhagen, 1974) started BIG in 2005 after co-founding PLOT in 2001 and working at OMA in Rotterdam. Designing buildings that are as programmatically and technically innova-tive as they are resource conscious he has become a protagonist of a hedonistically sustainable approach to architecture where environmental and social issues blend to enhance the quality of people’s lives. He has received numerous awards and honors, including the Danish Crown Prince’s Culture Prize in 2011, the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale in 2004, and the ULI Global Award for Excellence in 2009. The Wall Street Journal named him the architectural innovator of the year in 2011, and he appears on Time’s list of ‘The 100 Most Influential People’ in 2016. Alongside his architectural practice, Ingels has taught at Harvard, Yale, Columbia, and Rice, and he is Honorary Professor at the Royal Academy of Arts, School of Architecture in Copenhagen.

Richard Ingersoll Florence

Richard Ingersoll (San Francisco, 1949) studied architecture at the University of California, Berkeley. Professor at Syracuse University in Florence, he was associate professor at Rice University in Houston and has taught at the ETH of Zurich, the la Facoltà di Architettura di Ferrara, the Universidad de Navarra in Pamplona, and at Peking University in Beijing. Editor-in-chief of Design Book Review (1983-1998), he is the author of books like Global Architec-ture, 1900-2000. A Critical Mosaic, Volume I: North America, USA and Canada (2000); Ticino Modernism. The University of Lugano, with Kenneth Frampton (2004), Sprawltown, Looking for the City on Its Edges (2006), and World Architecture: A Cross-Cultural History (2012). Ingersoll is a regular collaborator in prominent international magazines like Arquitectura Viva, Il Giornale di Architettura, Lotus, C3, and Bauwelt.

Llà tzer Moix (Sabadell, 1955) is a cultural journalist. Having earned his degree in Journalism at the Universidad Autó noma de Barcelona, he worked at Catalunya-Express, El Correo Catalá n, and TVE (Spanish Television) before starting at the Barcelona newspaper La Vanguardia, where for twenty years, until 2009, he was in charge of cultural news, and where he now serves as Deputy Editor, columnist, and architecture critic. His books, published by Anagrama and Seix Barral, include Mariscal (1992), La ciudad de los arquitectos (1994), Wilt soy yo. Conversaciones con Tom Sharpe (2002), Mundo Mendoza (2006), and Arquitectura milagrosa (2010). He has taught at the Master of Art Communication and Criticism at the University of Girona, and participated as a relator at two previous congresses organized by the Fundació n Arquitectura y Sociedad: ‘More for Less’ in 2010 and ‘Necessary Architecture’ in 2014.

Antonio Lucas (Madrid, 1975), a Journalism graduate, has worked in the newspaper El Mundo since 1996 and is currently a culture editor and writer. Besides daily news reporting, he produces ‘En Primera Fila’, a Sunday edition series of interviews with prominent figures of national and world culture. Antonio Lucas also has an extensive poetic career, having published Antes del mundo (second place in the Adonais Awards, Madrid, Rialp) in 1996 and Lucernario (Barcelona, DVD Ediciones) in 1999, which in 2000 won him the Ojo Crí tico de Poesí a recognition of Spanish radio (RNE). In 2004 he published Las má scaras (Barcelona, DVD Ediciones). He received the XXX International City of Melilla Award for the book Los mundos contrarios and, in 2014, the prestigious Loewe Foundation International Poetry Prize for the collection of poems Los desengañ os.

Peter Buchanan (Zomba, 1942) studied architecture at the University of Cape Town. Upon graduating in 1968 he worked at major Cape Town firms: Gabriel Fagan and Revel Fox & Partners. In the 1970s he moved to the UK and worked at practices like Halpern+Partners and Sidell Gibson Partnership. In 1979 he joined the editorial team of The Architects’ Journal and The Architectural Review, becoming Deputy Editor of the latter in 1982. He has been an edito-rial advisor or board member in many other journals worldwide. Since 1992 he has freelanced as a writer, exhibition curator, and consultant in environmental design and planning. He has also worked in radio and TV, including for the BBC and the Discovery Channel, and lectured at various universities and events. His books include Ten Shades of Green and the five volumes of Renzo Piano Building Workshop: Complete Works.

Vicente Verdú (Elche, 1942), Spanish writer and journalist, holds a doctorate in Social Sciences from the Sorbonne University in Paris, and is a member of the Nieman Foundation for Journal-ism at Harvard. He is a regular contributor to the newspaper El País, for which he served as Opinion Editor and Culture Editor. He has a large number of books to his name, many of them award-winning titles, including El fútbol, mitos, ritos y símbolos, Señoras y señores, El planeta americano, El estilo del mundo (Le style du monde in its French edition), La hoguera del capital, and Enseres domésticos. He has picked up the González-Ruano, José María Pemán, and Julio Camba journalism prizes, as well as the Grand Prix du Livre for Le style du monde. As a painter Verdú has displayed his work in Madrid, Málaga, Elche, and Cadaqués, among other cities, and his paintings have been included in international art fairs like those of Nice, Innsbruck, and Beijing.

Luis Fernández-Galiano (Calatayud, 1950) is an architect, professor at the School of Ar-chitecture of Madrid’s Universidad Politécnica and editor since 1985 of the journals AV/Arquitectura Viva. Between 1993 and 2006 he was in charge of the weekly architecture page of the newspaper El País, where he now writes in the Op-Ed section. Member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts and of the Royal Academy of Doctors, he is an International Fellow of the RIBA, and has been Cullinan Professor at Rice University, Franke Fellow at Yale University, a visiting scholar at the Getty Center of Los Angeles, a visiting critic at Princeton, Harvard and the Berlage Institute, and has given lecture series at the Universidad Menéndez Pelayo and the Fundación March. He has also chaired the international architecture congresses ‘More for Less’ (2010), ‘The Common’ (2012) and ‘Necessary Architecture’ (2014).

President of the jury in the 9th Venice Architecture Biennale, juror of the Mies van der Rohe Award and of the Aga Khan Award for Architecture, he has curated the exhibitions El espacio privado, Extreme Eurasia (in Tokyo and in Madrid), Bucky Fuller & Spaceship Earth and Jean Prouvé: Industrial Beauty (these last two with Norman Foster), as well as Spain mon amour (in the 13th Venice Architecture Biennale and in Madrid), and The Architect is Present. He has been on the jury of several international competitions in Europe, America and Asia, including those of the National Library of Mexico, the National Art Museum of China, the National Library of Israel and the Noble Qur’an Oasis in Madinah. Among his books are La Quimera Moderna, Fire and Memory, Spain Builds (with New York’s MoMA in its English version, and presented in its Chinese version with symposiums in Shanghai and Beijing) and Atlas, Architectures of the 21st Century, a series of four volumes.

Francisco Mangado Pamplona

Francisco Mangado (Estella, 1957) earned his architecture degree from the University of Navarre School of Architecture, where he has been teaching since 1982. He has also been a guest professor at Harvard, Yale, EPFL Lausanne, and Cornell. In June 2008 he set up the Fundación Arquitectura y Sociedad. Parallel to his academic activity and his dedication to the programs of the foundation, he runs an architectural practice from Pamplona. Notable among his built works are the Cultural Center and Church in Thiene (Italy), the Baluarte Congress Center and Auditorium in Pamplona, the Municipal Exhibition and Congress Center of Ávila, the Archaeology Museum of Vitoria, the Football Stadium of Palencia, the Spanish Pavilion at Expo Zaragoza 2008, and the Auditorium of Teulada. More recent projects include the Convention Center of Palma de Mallorca, the Asturias Fine Arts Museum in Oviedo, and an Office Tower in Buenos Aires.

His work has been presented in several solo exhibitions, and his professional practice has earned him numerous honors, among them the Andrea Palladio Architecture Award, the City of Thiene Award for Architecture, the Architécti Prize, and the CEOE and FAD Awards. For the Spanish Pavilion at Expo Zaragoza 2008 he won first prize in the 7th Tiles of Spain (ASCER) Awards, the Construmat Award, the García Mercadal of the Aragon Institute of Architects, and the Giancarlo Ius Gold Medal of the UIA. In 2009, still for the pavilion, the Spanish As-sociation of Architecture Institutes (CSCAE) gave him the National Architecture Award. For its part, the Archaeology Museum in Vitoria received the Copper for Architecture Award of the European Copper Institute and first prize in the COAVN Awards of 2010. Francisco Mangado was named a RIBA International Fellow in 2011 and an AIA Honorary Fellow in 2013.

The Fundación Arquitectura y Sociedad is a private nonprofit cultural endeavor with a public national and international reach. It was created in 2008 thanks to the initiative of the ar-chitect Francisco Mangado and his interest in promoting architecture as a field indissolubly linked to life and society.

The Foundation goes by the conviction that architecture is called upon to address the pro-blems that afflict the complex social fabric, and provide solutions by interacting with other disciplines. It understands architecture as a service that should bind together, condition, and facilitate the life of citizens. Hence, the Foundation seeks to bring together the knowledge and know-how of all fields concerned with the great challenges of our times.

The Foundation believes that architecture is conditioned by a physical and urban geography, by a history linked to materials and techniques, and by historical time; that it cannot allow itself to be a mere stylistic exercise, removed from context. We believe that architecture has an obligation to break out of the confined space of the actual discipline, and address the social issues of each moment of history, sharing in the preoccupations and challenges of the times and contributing to the forging of solutions. Nowadays, for example, society demands research in areas like sustainable development and other environmental matters, and with this, international cooperation, integrated urban planning, and social action in the broadest sense.

Among other endeavors, the Fundación Arquitectura y Sociedad seeks to promote debate on architecture and the city in a wider social context than that strictly bound to architectural work; to look into and foster discussion on architecture’s connections with other areas of study and creativity; to hold symposiums, sponsor awards and grants, and in general to develop activities that advance the foundation’s aims to help improve the quality of archi-tecture and urbanism.
