INTRODUCTION
The data in this report were collect€d on Cruises 6801, 6804 and 6806 of the CaliforniaCooperative Fisheries Investigations (CaICOFI) program by the RV David Starr Jordanof the Bureau of Commercial Fisheries (now NaUional Marine Fi.sheries Service) andthe RV Horizon of the Scripps Institution of Oceaaography. The first two digits inthis cruise-numbering system represent the year of the cruise; the Iast two digits, themonth, The cruises preceeding these in the series are 6610, 6612 and Special Cruise6611 all of which appear in SIO Ref. 69-2; and 6707 and 6712, both of which appear inSIO Ref . 69-8.
These data were collected in part and processed completely by personnel of the DataCollection and Processing Group (DCPG, MLR), Scripps Institution of Oceanography.
TABULATED DATA
Data for all cruises presented in this report were obtained by bottle casts and by thein situ Salinity/Temperature/Depth Monitoring and Recording System (STD) and appearin two forms:
1. Data from the sample botUe casts are tabulated wlth the observed levels ofdepth on the left of a page and standard levels of depth values interpolated and com-puted from these observations to the right.
2. For each STD lowering, temperature and salinity values are read only atstandard levels of depth and appear with the same computed values as the samplebottie data on the right of the page. Corrections may have been applied to the tem-perature or salinity values or to both from continuing comparison of sample bottledata and STD data collected on the same staton.
The data tabulated are of the same t)'pe as have previously appeared in these reports;the column headings from the computer are explained as follows:

Tabulations of the nitrite values follow the computer tabulations of other data forCruises 6804 and 6806. No nutrient samples were collected on Cruise 6g01 .
STANDARD PROCEDI]RES
In situ Salinity/Temperature/Depth Recorder
The manufacturer of the srD claims for the temperature an accuracy of +0.0boc onall ranges with repeatability of +0.01'c and, f,or the salinity.., u""r.""y of +0,02/*on all ranges wlth repeatabirity of. +0.0L/*. v Except for the depth range correspond-ing to the steepest part of the thermocline, where the salinity trace appears tofluctuate more wideiy than the botfle samples can confirm, the results of this cruisesupport the manufacturerrs claims.
continuing comparison of the data from each srD lowering with the sampre bottreobservations for the corresponding Iocation resulted in the folrowing cJrrectionsbeing applied to the srD standard depth values tabulated for each cruise:
rhe temperature from the bottre cast and srD recording agreed very well on cruise6801. However, some adjusting of the salinity occurred during the early loweringsof the STD flnalry resulting in a correction varying from -0.0r,/- at ttre surface to-0 .05/* at 500 meters .
cruise 6804 required no correction to the temperature but a correction varying from+0.00/* at the surface to +0.03/". at s00 meters was appried to aI stations.
cruise 6806 was the first cruise on which a digital data logger was used for datatabulation from the srD' A temperature correction varying from +0.00'c at thesurface to -0.05'c at 600 meters a,,d a salinity correction of +o.ot/* to -o.o4z*over the same depth range were applied to these tabulations.
V
Hydrographic casts
rhe obser,,ved data have been plotted and then evaruated using the method describedby KJein. zl Thi's involves consideration of their variation as functions of density ordepth and their relations to each other and comparison with concurrent srD observa_tions and with previous or adjacent observations. The Nansen-bottle cast data are

tabulated at observed depths; the values at standard depths are computer interpolationsaccording to a modified Rattray techniqu.,il except that some property values atstandard depths have been determined from consideration of the STD recording for thestation. These property values were entered in the "observedt' columns to preventinstabilities or to indicate features not covered by the hydrographic cast. The valuesare indicated by notations (see FOOTNOTES). To indicate degree of accuracy, tem-perafures are recorded in tenths of a degree rvhen obtained by bucket thermometerwhile temperatures from reversing thermometers or the STD are recorded in hun-dredths of a degree. The salinity values obtained by salinometer are recorded to threedecimal places, provided they meet accepted standards. The values recorded "have a
reproducibility of +0 .OO4%" salinity at the 95 per cent probability level, ?ld a probableaccuracy of +0.01% salinity or better at the same level of probabilittl'L/ The valuesare recorded to two decimal places when only one determination per sample was ob-tained, or where there is doubt concerning the accuracy of a particular sample, or ofall samples on a station. The accuracy of all samples obtained by salinometer and
recorded to two decimal places is believed to be equal to or better than those obtainedby manual titration.
The nutrient data for Cruises 6804 and 6806 are the first in these reports determinedusing the Technicon AutoAnalyzer.
On stations consisting of bottle casts only, extrapolated values and values interpolatedbetween remote observations are not indicated but can be determined from the tabula-tion of observed depths. A hyphen is used to indicate a missing observed or inter-polated value. The time on these stations is the time of messenger release for thebottle cast. The time listed for all STD stations is the startdown time for the lowering. When more than one bottle cast was made on station, messenger times and rvire anglesare given in the order of increasing depth and a significant change in position during a
multiple cast is listed similarly. Multiple casts are indicated by a letter follorving aliobserved depths of each cast except the cast originating at the surface. Footnotescorresponding to each letter will explain the type of cast.
On stations where more than one cast rvas lowered, slight discrepancies in the propertyvalues may be noted. These may be caused by changes in geographical position, realchanges with time, slighterrors in measurement or a combination of these factors.Values at standard depths in the area of these discrepancies mav be determined fromreconciliation of the plotted observed values and entered in the "observed" columnswith notations.

FOOTNOTES
In addition to footnotes, three special notations are used without footnotes becausetheir meaning is always the same.
Values which are not used in interpolatlon because they seem to be in error withoutapparent reason are indicated by the following notation.
u: uncertain value
Values at standard levels of depth entered in the observed columns to limit machineinterpolations may have either of the following notations.
k: a value determined from another measurementsuch as a bathytlermogram or STD recording.
g: a value determined from considerations such :rsstability or previous or surrounding stations.
