IntroductionHuman modeling and simulation- an effective method for predicting human behavior- In HCI, - Card’s information processing model (Cards 1983)- ACT-R based simulation (Anderson 1998)
Limitation- difficult to validate the results- parameter turning, personal difference or personalities is arbitrary
Personal method- another approach for predicting human behavior for HCI or product design- many man-hours require to create, produce a user scenario
In this paper,- propose a method to compensate limitations of each- human modeling and simulation + persona- predict residents’s behavior in an emergency situation to design emergency announcement strategies
Proposed MethodDefine target user based on the survey datacreate skeletons, detail user profiles
Develop a human model to describe and explain target human behaviors
Set model parameters based on the user profilesparameter set is arbitrarytarget demographic details help determine
Proposed MethodRun the simulation and obtain time-series behaviors
Interpret the result and give a narrative explanation of the simulation resultCreate a user scenariosemi-automatically generated according to guideline
Complete a personaHuman modeling and simulation only used to stimulate the imaginationnot to make critical decision
Model of Residents’ behaviorDesign an emergency announcement system that considers a variety of residents’ characteristics
Model+ Process of establishing residents’ behavior + influencing factors + effect on the process from the case analyses
SOR (Woodworth 1958)Stimulus: process of obtaining relevant informationOrganism: recognition of the situationResponse: decision
Model of Residents’ behaviorBayesian belief network (BBN)corresponds to the information input, situation judgement process, outputs the probabilities of the nodes

Discussion and conclusion Propose a method - human modeling and simulation + persona- efficient prediction of human behavior- applicable for creating personas for the design of emergency announcement system- creating scenario relatively easier and required fewer man-hours
Disadvantages- impossible to validate the result, lack of actual data- difficult to apply directly to predict human behavior in serious issues
Persona aims to stimulate the designer’s imagination to predict human behavior and fine potential problems,
Proposed method is an example of using less reliable human modeling and simulation for real-life practical problem.
