Comprehensive and critical review of the sociology of family

Hahm, In-hee.Prof. Dept. of Sociology, Ewha Womans Univ.

    Abstract

This paper intends to review the academic achievements for the last 50 years of the sociology of family, and to suggest the future research agenda. Chapter briefly outlines the flows of the research topics during the specific periods, and chapter tries to propose how to enrich the family studies from the interdisciplinary perspective.First, the number of the articles and the books of sociology of family areas showed the slow growth until 1970's, since then recorded significant developments. Until 1970's, main research agenda were mainly limited to the such topics as the family function, traditional kinship system, and the family of Shinla, Korea, and Yi dynasty. However, after the 1980s research subjects moved toward more diverse interests such as the feminist critic of the patriarchy, familism, sex and love, conjugal family's distinguishing features, full-time housewifery, family's class background, family problems and family policy, relations between the social structure and family life, family theories and methodologies, and the North Korean family etc..Beginning of the 21C, family studies embrace more broad concerns like crisis of the low fertility and the rapid ageing, increment of the multicultural families, the relationship between family and the state, and the market etc.. Also the outstanding developments of family history area should be noted.Recently a couple of debate topics emerged from the academic community. The family disruption vs. family restructuring debate is a typical example, and the collision between traditional familism and postmodern privatization, and the meaning of alternative life style are another examples.
