Q: I know there are many English storybooks in
the school library. Can I find out if there are any
Chinese storybooks in the school library?
A: Yes, there is a variety of Chinese storybooks
available in the school library. Pupils can go to the
library to read and borrow books during recess or
after school.
For the lower primary Chinese Language classes,
teachers will usually bring the whole class to the
library to guide pupils in the selection of storybooks.
In addition, teachers will also share a few pages of
a storybook with pupils during lessons to arouse
their interest so that pupils are motivated to borrow
the book to read for details and to know the ending
of the story.
Q: Does the school provide any reading list of Chinese
storybooks for children?
A: Currently, the school does not provide any reading list of
Chinese storybooks for pupils. However, we do strongly
encourage parents to bring their children to the NLB libraries,
such as the Sembawang Community Library or the
Woodlands Regional Library. Children should be encouraged
to select storybooks of their interest, and parents can play a
supportive role in the selection of books, as well as reading
together with their children.
On the NLB website, reading lists for the various children’s
age groups are available. The lists cover a range of books in
various genres and include both non-fiction and fiction
recommendations. Also available on the NLB website is an
online collection of talking picture books in Chinese, known as
the ChildRoad Chinese Digital Library,
