High‐time‐resolution X‐ray observations of compact objects (neutron stars and black holes) provide a unique tool to investigate strong‐field gravity, giving direct access to
measurements of black hole masses and spins, and to study the state of matter at supra‐
nuclear density.
Thanks to an innovative design and the development of large monolithic silicon drift detectors, the Large Area Detector (LAD) on board LOFT achieves a sensitive area of ~10 m2 (about 20 times larger than any previous X‐ray mission). With this large area and a good spectral resolution, LOFT will revolutionise the study of collapsed objects, yielding unprecedented information on strongly curved spacetimes and matter under extreme conditions of pressure and magnetic field strength.

A prototype of one of the more than 2000 silicon detectors that will form the scientific instruments of LOFT. The detector, which has been conceived, designed and built in Italy, represents the state of the art of X‐ray (and particle) detectors in the World.
Lead‐glass microcapillary plates will be coupled with SDDs, limiting the FOV to ~1°.
The microcapillary plates are made of 6 mm thick lead glass with micrometric
squared holes
Laboratorio di Astrofisica – 2012/12/20
The lead‐glass microcapillary plate is made of a specific glass (Phillips 3502).
The Phillips 3502 composition (mass fraction) is:
• Si 22.2%• O 34.6%• N 3.0%• K 7.2%• Bi 5.5%• Pb 27.4%

The naturally occurring potassium element contains approximately 0.0117% of the radioactive isotope 40K. Such a radioactivity will contribute to the LOFT/LAD background.Accurate knowledge of this background component is of paramount importance for LOFT.
The proposed laboratory experience is finalized to really measure this component of the LOFT
background, by using a test set‐up composed of a Silicon detector and a representative
prototype of the LOFT capillary plate collimator.
